Hi There,

Car is a 2003 Seat Ibiza 1.4 Sport, right hand drive UK Spec

Hopefully someone will be able to shed some light on this, have the following airbag code, Autoscan below,

01222 - Crash Sensor Side Airbag; Passenger Side (G180)
29-00 - Short to Ground

This appeared after vacuuming the car, I removed the seat and carpet to find a fairly large amount of water although the sensor was not submerged,

I removed the sensor it did not have any sign of corrosion on the connector, cleaned both sides of the connection anyway and applied some dielectric grease and then dried the area the best I could, then sealed what I believe to be the source of the water leak, unfortunately the code remains,

I looked for any signs of damage to the harness around the sensor but could not see anything, I have done some research into this and found that the moisture kills the sensor from what I have read,

Whilst the sensor was unplugged I got the following codes with my handheld scanner;

01222 - Crash Sensor Side Airbag; Passenger Side (G180)
Static - Interruption

01218 - Side Airbag Igniter; Passenger Side (N200)
Static - Value of Resistance too great

Obviously the airbag igniter code is due to having the airbag connector unplugged because the seat was removed at the time.

Now I cannot for the life of me find a replacement sensor anywhere,

The part number for the sensor 6Q0 909 606 D was replaced with 6Q0 909 606 J which was discontinued at the beginning of this year with no replacement... Typical ! Whilst on the phone to my local dealer he mentioned the specific part number I needed was 6Q0 909 606 J 007 but it is of course no longer available, I have searched everywhere for this part but cannot find one available not even second hand which I would ideally like to stay away from anyway.

Any help on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
EJ

Hello,

I think there is a phrase for this..... "planned obsolescence" :(

On one hand, I can understand why the part is no longer available, but on the other hand I can understand and relate to your frustrations as I have a 1996 Volkswagen GTI - VR6 and I too, am at the mercy of the used parts market for many of the replacement parts I need.

Volkswagen has some parts still, https://www.volkswagen-classic-parts.de/en/ - I do not see a website like this for Seat...

In the past I have not had too many problems with good used parts. Yes there is junk out there, but some times you have to do what you have to do.

Looking at the part number [6Q0 909 606 J 007], it may be possible that your dealer missed something and that is 'supposedly' this part number fits the Seat Ibiza till MY_2010 and the Cordoba/Vario till MY_2009.

I would image there would be some dealer some where in this world that may have that part in stock. Granted the parts catalog does state that this part number was dropped in 01/2021, maybe there is a chance you can find a 'New Olds Stock' (NOS) part??

Hope this helps,

drpeter

Hi drpeter,
Thanks for the response,

Yea it is rather frustrating, oddly enough I can relate to your vr6 part struggles too as I have 3 mk3 vr6's myself, and parts are certainly getting thinner on the ground, fortunately I have collected parts for them over the last 11 or so years since I got my first one and I also have a parts car just in case, and yes Volkswagen Classic Parts is a very good site just dangerous for my wallet :)

I just cannot find this sensor anywhere, all the places that I have messaged just confirms that it is no longer available, I have found a few of the ones that are in the car now 6Q0 909 606 D available in Europe but it's the coding in the sensor that is the problem, even if I got one it more than likely will be different and they are all used, don't get me wrong if I knew it would work at this point I would fit a used part but as I said the coding on it will likely be different anyway.

So now I am thinking the following;

1. Could I fit a later version of this airbag module that actually has crash sensors available ? (for a later mk3 Ibiza 2004/5 for example)

2. If I did replace the airbag module with a later version, what else would be required, just all the crash sensors ?

3. Would it be possible to code the original airbags to a new module ?

4. Biggest question I guess is which airbag module would work that actually has crash sensors available to buy ?

May have to ask this in the retrofit section but I am just thinking out loud, If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

Thanks in advance,
EJ

Hello

If I was you the first thing I would try would be to phone/email as many breakers as you can find to ask if they have any Seat Ibizas with side airbags and if they do see if they have the 6Q0 909 606D/J fitted. I have found this ones on ebay https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393109985937?hash=item5b872e5a91:g:AcEAAOSwJVRgEAGF and https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/284248908391?hash=item422e8e2267:g:CB8AAOSwzvRgbaVC and google : https://www.proxyparts.com/car-part...q0909606d/part/airbag-sensor/partid/14422161/

I have used secondhand parts without issue on my 07 Octavia and previously my 02 Fabia so they are not always bad. If there are no new ones available then I would say it must be worth a shot.

By the way I don't know the Ibiza's layout but my 07 Octavia had an "Implausible Signal" fault with the side airbag sensor in the driver's door. It was fixed by joining a cracked wire in the conduit between the door and the car. The wire had broken after years of the door repeatedly opening and closing. I assume you have checked this area if the sensor is mounted in the door. The wire could even be cracked without the insulation being broken.

Thanks and I hope this helps

Andrew

Have to expect the crash sensor will NOT be unique to the Ibiza - almost certainly a direct equivalent can be found on a Polo or Golf or Audi A3. I actually deleted all that stuff (with resistors) on an S3 track day car and recoded the airbag controller so it reports happy to the cluster. For a road car that's not an option. It's possible that the sensor in Ibiza has different electrical plug from another compatible part so just do a connector swap.

Unfortunately these parts have a "Colour Code" in addition to a base part number limiting them to specific vehicle models and airbag control modules.

I expect the colour code denotes the axial geometry and sensitivity of the sensor. There is one for sale on eBay.DE that matches the OP part number 6Q0909606J.

Its big money for not necessarily the perfect part. Personally I would take a punt on a much cheaper 6Q0909606 which is used in other VW & SEAT applications. Fair bet the fault code will go away - but whether its the perfect part is anyones guess.

Also agree with post above the fault could in elsewhere in the loom - that fault code suggesting short to ground should go away with the sensor unplugged - unless the actual loom has a short circuit. I expect the actual sensor is hermetically sealed so chances of water creep into that is pretty low.
