Hi.

We have a 2014 VW TDI Jetta Sportwagen. We bought that car from a VW dealer after VW had recalled it and done whatever they did because of the pollution control issue.

1. The car’s VIN is 3VWML7AJ4EM619369. The current mileage is 99,593.

2. While driving in a city on 08 June the CEL (Check Engine Light) came on solid amber. The next day I checked the faults and found only one. That was:

008194 - Particulate Trap Bank 1

P2002 - 007 - Efficiency Below Threshold - MIL ON

I reset that fault.

3. Yesterday (10 June) the CEL light came on while we were on a trip of about 150 miles. I checked the engine module after we got home and I found the same error was back. That was:

008194 - Particulate Trap Bank 1

P2002 - 007 - Efficiency Below Threshold - MIL ON

And a 2nd error was present. That was:

001025 - EGR System

P0401 - 001 - Insufficient Flow - MIL ON

I believe the CEL came on while we were in Enid, OK, probably going about 45 MPH.

I have the freeze frame info if that would help you.

I'd love to hear your input on this including but not limited to:

How urgent is getting this taken care of?

We are supposed to take a trip of about 200 miles that will include Interstate and city driving. Do you think we can safely make the trip with whatever is going on to cause these faults?

Do you have a rough estimate about what it will cost to fix this?

Thanks!

Mike

Seems the EGR is plugged. It seems the normal regen cycle is not cleaning it. That means the Particulate Trap needs to be cleaned/replaced.

Can you drive it 200 miles? Probably not. It will plug further and eventually will lead to further codes/problems. I can't really say how soon/how many miles until more problems come may be.

I cannot speculate on the cost. Some can be cleaned.. others have to be replaced.

For better answers, post up an autoscan.

Thanks Bruce,
Here's more info that I hope you have time to read and advise me on:
I am trying to decide on a VW dealer that has a good shop. Wichita and the Oklahoma City and Tulsa areas are about the same distance from our home. Since this repairs should be covered by warranty, I'm stuck taking it to a dealer's shop, I guess.

Here's my problem:
While driving in Wichita on the 8th of June, the CEL came on, After I got home I used my Vag Com and found the Particle Trap Bank 1 had this fault: P2002 - 007 - Efficiency Below Threshold - MIL ON
I cleared that fault and on the next trip, on the 10th of June, after having driven about 75 miles the CEL came on again.
To make a long story short, I contacted the service advisor at a dealership. He said:
it was probably just soot buildup that the car should be able to clean up on it’s own.

He said :

  • Do not reset the faults
  • Drive the car with RPMs at 2500-3500 RPM, constant speed on our trip to OKC.
  • The CEL should go off if the car cleans things up.
I told him the DPF light never came on.

He said the CEL light should go off if the above doesn’t fix things.

============================

My thoughts and findings:

The fix described above is called a DPF Regeneration.

From YouTube videos,

The fix should take 15 minutes. If it doesn’t self-fix, take it to a VW dealer.

================================

I drove for nearly an hour yesterday in 4th gear, engine RPM 3050, constant speed and RPM on I-35. The CEL light never went out.

The engine faults this morning (12 June) are:

         ==============================

I can send the faults before I drove yesterday if that would help but I don't think the driving changed anything.

The service advisor said driving with these faults to Oklahoma City at around 3000 RPM wouldn't hurt anything and might even end up clearing the problem. I never heard of engine faults resetting themselves and other things worry me about that shop. Their service reviews on Yelp are not good at all :-(

Does what the service advisor told me sound right to you?

I'm beginning to think a 2014 TDI Jetta Sportwagen doesn't have a DPF light. What do you think?

Thanks!
Mike

P.S. I talked to the service advisor again yesterday. He said it might take 100 Miles at high RPM to clear the problem.
I'm beginning to think he doesn't know enough or may want to cause a bigger problem that they can charge for fixing.

Also, I just read about using VCDS to initiate a regeneration. I hope you can tell me more about that. Also, is that something I should try with the problem I'm having?
Thanks again +++
Mike

A DPF "Efficiency Below Threshold" fault does not mean that the DPF is plugged up with soot or that it a regen is called for. In fact, it might mean just the opposite; that there's not enough back-pressure being generated by the DPF to indicate it's working properly.

What does your tail pipe look like? Is there much soot in it?

There's a little soot. It's not as clean as when I bought the car but it's not too bad.

The VW dealer I hae decided to take the car to is 127 miles away, via an Interstate highway with speed limits of 75 mph most of the way, 70 part of the way and 60 part of the way. The service advisor told me to drive like I usually do, which would be in 6th gear, getting around 2000 RPM for most of the trip. The plan is to leave home at 7am Monday morning. I'd love to hear your thoughts about making that trip. If you need to contact me Monday, I'll probably see a reply vi this for-um or you can email me at mike@morriss.us or call or text me at 713-515-2246.

I think it will be OK. This car looks to have just under 100k on it. When did you purchase it? IIRC, the dieselgate warranty covers all the emissions stuff for at least 120,000 miles.

After a LOT of exchanges and reading from TDIClub, and talking with a different dealer, going to take the car to Norman, OK Monday morning early.

We bought the car in Jan 2018 with about 50K on it. Yes, I think the extended warranty should cover it. I just hope this is not a recurring problem. We usually keep VWs until about 500K but this may not work for this car. I got a LOT of info from TDIClub too.
We are retired and live about 5 miles outside a small city. Short trips are normal for me. I didn't know anything about automatic regen but did notice the fan running sometimes when I shut the car off. I wondered about that. I need to know more about it. Can you recommend a good source of info about that?
Thanks again +++

I suppose you're aware that diesels are not exactly ideal for constant short trip usage?

Then again, I'm not sure how one accumulates 500k miles (or for that matter 50k in 3-1/2 years) on a car that's used primarily for short trips. :confused:

I sure wasn't aware of that. Given the lifespan of DPF's i've seen reported on TDIClub, I don't think these cars are gool for long trip usage either. We've had a Diesel Dasher, 2 TDI Beetles, and now this TDI Sportwagen. Never had problems like this and sure didn't expect it or I'd never have bought it. My experience with Diesel VWs is just long and reliable life-spans. We DO take road trips of about 90 to 150 miles about once a month and occasionally drive on trips of about 1000 to 1500 miles or so.
Oh well. I hope owning this VW isn't TOO expensive a learning experience.

The 500K was longest life expectancy we've had for our diesel VWs. Sorry, I overstated the 500K number. We usually just keep cars a long time. We had over 300K on our 99 TDI Beetle and currently have nearing 200K on our 05 TDI Beetle. The 50K so far on this one includes a few of those longer road trips.

Yeah, those were relatively old-school diesels, without DPFs and without NOx after-treatment.
