So I have this annoying fault code on the radio/media/nav unit (5F) aka "RMC" which seems to point to a comms problem in relation to instruments.
Strangely on the auto scan there is indication that the instruments (17) cannot be reached, but I can access it directly via VCDS easily.
When clearing the fault on 5F it returns in matter of seconds with same presentation.

No apparent loss of functionality that I can ascertain - there is clearly communications from the RMC to cluster in terms of what media is being played or nav info so its a bit odd.

I did run the optical bus diagnostics which does point to a fault:

Thursday,03,June,2021,14:28:01:30756
VCDS Version: Release 21.3.0
Control Module Part Number: 4G5 907 468 A
Component and/or Version: J533--Gateway H10 0028

Optical Bus Diagnostic : Standard

Controller Electrical Optical
CAN Gateway OK OK
Information Electr. OK OK
Instruments ERROR ERROR
Sound System OK OK

I have not recently changed any coding anywhere on the car so it points to some HW fault or poor connectivity.
To my knowledge neither the RMC or instruments have been removed.
I did lift the rear seat and checked the optical plugs on the CAN gateway are secure and there is no visible dirt at least.
Any pointers or next steps welcome as a general search of the 03157 fault didn't reveal anything useful in terms of corrective action !

Full scan below.

Eagle eyed viewers will see the BCM is coded for BiXenons (which I retrofitted and documented here as working fine a long time ago). I also added a higher spec gateway (well the dealership had to activate that thanks to the anti-DIY tactics of component protection) along with the adaptive headlamp controller which also all worked perfectly. After some months this communications error cropped up and I suspected it was caused by the 'new' CAN gateway causing some odd behaviour so I swapped back to the original factory gateway and verified the fault is still there... obviously this gateway doesn't have the CAN connection to the headlamp level controller (55).

Looks like there is not much info on this flavour of RMC in VCDS - no labels or coding helper. If anyone has it in German I would be happy to translate that and share back.
In saying all that - the coding for this has not been changed in years... is this a low level comms problem that needs a hardware reset like pulling fuses or battery disconnected ?

When clearing the fault on 5F it returns in matter of seconds with same presentation.
I've had some experience with those "symptoms" ie the "hard fault" : check fuses, wires , perhaps a plug (unplugged). Many times with faults that come right back immediately, it is something rather obvious.
The vid above may give you additional insight.

Thanks for the vid link - it confirms what I understood about the MOST bus from other Audi SSP docs - the presence of the electrical error at the instruments is perhaps a good clue to the root cause.

I purchased an optical link test loop for small money to see if that points to anything in particular - I should be able to verify all the optical cables in the car are good. I only ever unplugged that at the CAN gateway and I know to treat those cables very carefully. Neither the radio or the cluster have been removed so it would be very tedious if there is a damaged/loose connection behind there.

I will do a fuse check and try diss'ing the battery a few minutes to see if a hard reset kicks things back to life. I could understand the errors better if there was some loss of functionality between 5F and 17 but it all seems to work perfectly - just VCDS picking up this low level comms fault.

Also - I do still have older versions of VCDS installed so I can back pedal to the version where everything was error free - open to all suggestions here. I have found a bunch of 3157 related threads across various Audi owner forums but none which come to a nice clean conclusion although a common cause does seem to be coding errors / config mismatches which cause this issue so I have to revisit all the coding values.

EDITED to include pics.

So I looked at schematics and found which fuses to pull for instruments and media/nav unit. Did those in the hope of a hardware reset maybe resolving the issue but sadly not.

SC_FUSES_RHD.jpg

Then I turned attention to the green/violet diagnostic wire that links the CAN gateway to instruments, Bose and media/nav units on this car (it's also used on cars with DVD or TV tuners). The schematics reference a junction point in the loom where those wires are combined. Of course it's a total mystery where the actual junction is on the loom.

Ever the optimist I lifted the rear seat and carefully unpicked the fabric insulating tape at the CAN gateway and peeled as far back as I could without lifting out rear carpet and all the tedium that involves. Sadly that area of the loom did not find the cable joint... it's a single cable all the way into the big heavy loom at the edge of rear seat which would require a long day of pulling out much of the cabin to trace further.

Next point of interest is the schematic shows a connection point at the driver side A pillar (LHD or RHD) for the green/violet diag wire between the gateway and cluster so that's the next candidate for possible badness.

I left enough of the diag wire at the gateway in such a way I can do an easy connectivity check when I get behind that A pillar trim.

I simplified the schematic thus:

Hans & Franz messed up again - the ELSA wiring info clearly calls out T17g for that via as being on drivers side following the sense of LHD or RHD but after taking all the right side trim apart to locate the A-pillar plugs on driver side, I can confirm that there is indeed 4 x 17 pin plugs of the correct colour in the correct locations shown but there is absolutely not the green/violet wire in any of them.

I can only hope one of the plugs on the left A-pillar (which would be T17g for LHD as per drawings) is actually T17o for us 2nd class RHD citizens - I find this issue all too often with Audi schematics over the years. I had some hope with the C7 diagrams as they do appear to address the RHD market much better then older generation diagrams, but there is a clear mistake here on the diagnostic wiring. I wouldn't mind so much but it takes so long to carefully remove all the side trim from B-pillar to make sure you don't break any clips before you get to the A-pillar.

I think I would start with the test loop, as you may have a non-functioning "box" and not a broken wire problem.

Its the electrical error for the instruments that I want to bottom out first. I could understand a non-functioning box if there was any loss of functionality or other / general errors but its just this diagnostic error which is getting picked up.

For my own sanity I will need to look at the left side A-pillar for that green/purple wire - if its not there I will have to go ahead and pull the cluster and radio/info unit to verify the optical loops and electrical connection back to the CAN gateway.

Any normal person would just ignore the error but its annoying me as clearly something is out of whack.

I completely understand and I do understand your process (very thorough !) , but at this point in your investigation it seems like a lot of effort. Who knows what is triggering that fault and you could have a false positive on your hands ; meaning that something else could be triggering that message and perhaps "looping" one of those boxes may make your concern disappear (?). Don't take those messages so literally (counter intuitive I know) (keep a open mind, some creativity may apply here ) as it may only be a symptom and not the actual problem / component. You may discover just doing some quick / simple diagnostics (loop, unplugging, then re-scanning etc.) may lead you in another direction. BTW, I have had a fuse show ok only to find a loose connection to it ; meaning "wiggle" connections around a bit and be sure there is continuity.

I look forward to read here what you ultimately discover!

Yeah so the joy continues... off with all the left side trim and the now infamous green / purple diag wire is nowhere to be seen their either. I took couple pics for posterity and buttoned it up again. Next joy will be removal of the radio / info unit and cluster - I was hoping to avoid that but at least when they are exposed I can do continuity checks on that diagram wire and the optical links. Only when I have ruled out connectivity can I really start pointing fingers at the cluster or radio units themselves. Deep breath lol !

So the colour and position of those 17-pin plugs does align with schematics. The red herring was mention of T17g/3 in one diagram and T17g/14 in another for the OBD diagrams wire. That turns out not the case for MY2013 RHD car with RMC.

For a laugh, I tried running output tests on the RMC unit (5F)... It goes along this basis:

1. Signal: Telephone On - this had no apparent output that I could detect - audible or visible (my phone was paired)
2. Lighting - the illumination on the buttons was activated
3. Self Test - showed HexValue 0x0001 and Bin Bits 000000
4. END

Anybody got a clue what normal looks like ?

Its annoying this unit 4G0035193E is seemingly not well documented on VCDS or anywhere else for that matter.
I will happily translate any info that exists in German.

Tomorrow I hope to pull the RMC unit and the cluster for further tests

I have captured ADMAP and BLOCKMAP files if they are any use... dont have anywhere to share them here of course... not that anyone cares either lol - seems i am the only person in the world who has scanned that RMC device with VCDS.

actually i stuck them on a google drive :

ADMAP : admap
BLOCKMAP : blockmap

I might do a factory reset on the radio/info unit - bit of a pain bonding phones etc but it might force things into a different state.

I cannot help wonder if some coding change on the BCM or the cluster for the xenon light retrofit caused this, but it was all clean of errors when I did that 2yrs ago and I checked all the coding change history that I saved already once. But its also no coincidence that the fault was introduced after I had the dealership remove CP on the 2nd hand gateway which I fitted to enable the extended CAN bus for connectivity with the LWR/AHLS/J431 module. Wonder if their system recoded or made some adaptation channel changes somewhere along the way.

I had always assumed the cause of the error was some low level s/w difference or mismatch in protocols with the replacement gateway which did not come from same model year. All functionality was in tact however. It became really perplexing when I swapped back to original gateway expecting the comms error on the radio (5F) to disappear but it didn't.

I already checked that no modules have been software upgraded/reflashed by the dealer - unless they hide that very well - I only see one programming count reported.

Anyway - too much talk - what I really need to get on with next is verify that I do have electrical connection from $5F to $19 - I need to pull the radio for that.
