I have owned my 2007 B7 Quattro Avant 2.0T for the past 3+ years. It came with a valet key as well as the two remotes. The handbook has only minimal instructions for the valet key but implies that it should open and start the car. I read somewhere that it only allows the car to be driven "slowly" but can't find where I read that. My valet key opens the car, fits the ignition and the car starts but the engine runs for 1 second only then shuts down in a way that "suggests" the management system is shutting it down. It has behaved like this for at least the past year (the previous and only time I tried it).
I did have one thought: I was told by the shop that replaced the fuel injectors a few months ago (after one went out) that they got a low fuel pressure code when testing the engine after the work. I assume they ran it at full rpm. I suspect the fuel filter needs changing. I was already aware, from idle browsing in the registers, that the duty cycle on the low pressure fuel pump was looking high (40% from memory). Also, when I open the car (causing the fuel pump to start, to prime the HP pump) the pump runs for 3 or 4 seconds before stopping which I think is too long? I'm wondering if the valet key causes the fuel pump to run at a much lower speed, so as not to allow the engine much power. With a partially blocked filter this might prevent the engine running. Anyone know? Any suggestions how to diagnose? Could this also be a worn-out fuel pump? is there a VCDS measurement of LP fuel pressure?
Please note: the valet key operates differently on the B8 A4's (i.e. 2008/9 onward) so any experience with these may not be relevant.

I really doubt that is the case.

It sounds like your valet key isn't matched to the immobilizer. This can happen if any key-matching was done that didn't include the valet key.

The bulb errors are due to LEDs I am using. I have new motor mounts but not fitted them yet. The lambda sensor errors were prior to the injector replacement. The rest all seem to be related to the valet key use and were not present last time I ran a log.
I guess the "key" one is 001299 - Incorrect Immobilizer Key. Didn't know those had any electronics in them: can't find a battery cover on it. Can I rematch it myself? The handbook procedure for key re-matching appears to be only for the regular fobs. I did try that process (which I'm familiar with) with the valet key in the ignition lock but it made no difference - I think it just looks for the signature in the fob signal when you press a button after turning on the ignition.

Didn't know those had any electronics in them: can't find a battery cover on it.
It's a passive transponder chip. Very small. Powered by the car's reader coil.
Can I rematch it myself?
On this car, no. The B7 uses a challenge/response mechanism rather than a simple PIN.

But put that valet key in the ignition. Do not attempt to start the engine. Go to 25-Immobilizer and show us what you have in MVBs 022, 023, and 024. That will at least show if the key is good. It's relatively rare, but those transponders can fail.

Indeed and in addition to Uwe's fine suggestion......

Did you know a battery Jesus Easter Bunny reset will sometimes realign an IMMO and it must be done with a bridge for capacitor discharge at battery terminals & with key left in on position after battery disconnected for a few minutes?

So the valet key looks to be in working condition, but there are only two keys matched to this immobilizer. I assume those are your two "full" keys?

The transponder in the valet key is locked. If that key was locked to this immobilizer, it should be possible to re-match it (along with the "full" keys) and have it working again.

What I am missing is the process to re-match it.
It needs to be done on-line to the servers at VW/Audi's mothership.

I have two key fobs matched to this car.
On your car, fobs are different than keys. Fob provide remote locking and unlocking. They are matched to the CCM or the BCM. Keys allow the car to be started and are matched to the Immobilizer.

It is possible that ex owner add extra remote key and did not bring at time of programing that valet key and valet key was not regiter to immobilizer so it does not work now, So it needs to be readopted along with 2 other remote keys .
