Recently bought Passat 2016 had problem with passive TPMS. While driving more than 100km/h car gave sometimes Fault: Tire Pressure Monitorin System or something like that (not sure what it would say in English since it has Finnish texts). Loud beep and orange flashing tire icon with ! inside it. VCDS gave fault code like this:

I found TPI 2038705/1 from year 2014 with same symptoms but that was of no help since Technical background was "in analysis". Perhaps there is a newer TPI available?

ODIS guided fault finding gave possible cause of fault:
- Damage on chassis
- Driving on poor surfaces
- Driving style (treating vehicle like sports car)
- Foreign bodies near the wheel speed sensors :p

Last step with guided fault finding was:
- Check the wheel speed sensors and the ABS ring for metallic foreign objects.

No foreign metallic objects found but both rear wheel ABS rings were giving interrupted signals at high speed and after replacing both rear wheel bearings (with ABS rings) problem was fixed.

Hope this helps others struggling with the same problem.

im am also seeing this issue. i was in hit in the rear back axle wheel area. months after i am now getting the tpms sensor malfunction. i scanned and cleared it to see whats up. i have the original scan still so i can compare.
after a few days it came back.
i assum its this. it sounds like the ring / abs system is linked to the tpms system. i guess that's what it uses to tell speed as well as different speeds on each wheel. i did tell the insurance company that it was damaged, they couldn't tell since nothing was showing at the time and any physical damage was repaired. the rings and axle was not easily visible. so this will show that its damaged for sure.

Yep. That's how an "indirect" TPMS system works.
