Is my HEX+CAN broken?

VCDS latest 20.12.0 freshly reinstalled, using my old HEX+CAN HC470400 Rev.B, bought in 2007 directly from you, details are available.

Started slowing down, taking 2 or 3 tries to enter stations, then not going to the next station unless I manually pressed ‘ Done Go Back’

Eventually freezing, not responding after pressing 'esc' and the led on the hax+can blinking green/red continuously, even after it is unplugged from the PC.

Please help, Thanks!

Red/green blinking after unplugged from PC is, uhm, unexpected from a HEX+CAN.

I would try it both on a different car and a different computer (one at a time), for process of elimination. If neither changes the behavior, then you know it's the HEX+CAN itself.

Before I find another car, I had another go with my old pc and version 17.1.3

Auto-scan ran again slow, freezing when retrieving fault codes and eventually stopping with a COMMUNICATION ERROR message.

However I managed to complete a run that I put below. I noticed Adress 19 CAN GATEWAY malfunction 0010, does that explain if something is wrong with the cable or the Audi’s female receptacle?

No, not really, especially since the scan doesn't show all the data from the Gateway (like the fault codes).

What do you if you go straight to the Gateway instead of doing an Auto-Scan?

It seems trying to connect, as there is a symbol like a period turning next to PROTOCOL CAN, nothing happens, but the led blinks green/red. If I 'close controller go back' the led goes steady green

Do you have someone nearby to borrow an original Hex Can or V2 or Hex Net and try it on the same car, with the same computer?

Are you scanning the car with the engine running? Modules might be shutting down to conserve power.

Hi again, I managed to test my HEX-CAN using my own plus another pc on an A1 and then on a A3 and in both instances it worked with no problem, so the HEX-CAN is good!

Is the receptacle on my car broken, or something further inside the car wrong?

A few months ago, the AUDI dealer put on a new set of air struts, so he surely had access back then with Audi diagnostics.

Is there a chance he has 'blocked' or done something that does not allow the VCDS to access the controls?

Any ideas will be appreciated!

I would start with a visual inspection of the OBD-II socket.

So that actually tells us the HEX+CAN is working properly as is the install of VCDS. The issue lays with the car.

Did you inspect it? If you take your HEX+CAN and wiggle it in the socket, do you get different results? Did you inspect the pins to make sure none have been damaged? Did you inspect the wires to see if there is any damage there?

It is also possible that wiring in the vehicle and/or control modules are messing up the communications in the vehicle.

Unlikely for we know of no means to block control modules. Was anyone playing around in the car before all this happened? That is, was anyone trying to recode the CAN gateway? Seems the communications between modules has shut down. Did someone recode the CAN gateway and now it is not talking to all the devices connected to it?
