Unknown fault code 15604 on 1.2tdi (scan included)

Hi. I have a fault on a 2010 car with the 1.2tdi greenline engine. It's been to a main dealer who simply cleared the code and said they had no test steps given to them. Of course it has come back.

Any idea what the code means, and why VCDS doesn't know what it is? Could it be missing from the .rod file for the ECU? The only references I've found in searches is to people who have never found out what the code was. The car is playing up on almost every drive cycle now so I'd like to have VCDS give me some clues.

It's an odd little fault: Glowplug lights starts flashing. Engine speed won't drop below 1500 RPM until you get off the brake pedal which means an odd dance where you have to press the clutch so the high revs aren't puliing you along against the brakes, then get off the brakes and back on again, and the engine speed drops off.

Looks like there are a few versions higher than 7882 for a FL_03P906021L:

Thanks. That thread is one of the few I found, but doesn't really explain the problem. For them the problem seemed to go away after the software update. This car has been running fine for ten years, and is showing physical symptoms of some kind of problem, so it would be good if I can find out why VCDS isn't able to tell me what the fault means, as I believe it's a real physical fault.

That was answered by Uwe in the thread I linked:

What you have to understand with these newer ECUs that use the UDS/ODX protocols is that the "raw" fault code coming from the ECU cannot be interpreted without looking it up in an ECU-specific "dictionary" first, and if the ECU manufacturer doesn't include it in the dictionary they give to VW for that ECU, no scan tool will be able to tell you what it means.

It could be as simple as something being slightly out of spec and the ECU being fussy about it. An update may include better handling of the condition so it no longer throws a code.

Obviously no guarantee it'll fix your issue but it would be my first action...

Thanks. The issue with getting a SW update is that it is likely to bring in the dieslgate fixes too which are known to cause their own issues on some models. I wondered if the code is included in the relevant file for a later version of the SW for this ECU? I tried looking into the files but the .rod isn't plain text so gives me gibberish.

9715 should be pre dieselgate fixes.

A decent local tuner or VAG specialist should be able to perform the update without going to the latest. I certainly agree a dealer would be likely to flash the latest 9987 and understand why you'd want to avoid that

Surprised the car has only covered 18k in 10 years though, seems very low given TDi's are typically for higher mileage users.

Yes, it is a low mileage. It's a one owner car. In the first couple of years it did most of those miles, but then the owners became less mobile so used it a lot less, and just never got round to changing for something more appropriate. They haven't driven it all in 12 months, and only 2 or 3 short journeys in the 6 months before that.

I'll look at getting an independant to have a look.

Not a 100% guarantee this is correct, but when found in other engines that do have that code defined, it is

Assuming this is the error in your ECM, now you know at least nothing external to it has gone bad.
