New ECU#1 on Phaeton W12: CEL

As you probably know, the W12 engine has 2 ECU's (one for each cylinder bank). I just replaced ECU#1 with a brand new unit. I sent the old ECU to Speedometer Solutions (www.speedosolutions.com) and they were able to read and provide me with the PIN number I needed to adapt the new ECU. After adaptation, the car started and ran just fine, but now I have a new CEL. The scan on ECU#1 is below. The Ross-Teck Wiki says the possible cause is:

• Coding of Powertrain related Control Modules wrong/incomplete

I checked the coding on the ECU's and they both read 0000173, which I believe is correct for the W12 (BAP engine code).

Clearing the code doesn't help as it comes back immediately. Ideas?

My first thought is maybe there's a mismatch in cruise-control activation states. That's something that would definitely need to be done on a new ECU, may need to be manually matched between the two ECUs, and wouldn't show up in the actual module coding in an Auto-Scan. Connect to address 01, go to the Login button, login with code 11463 per the tool-tip that will pop up. Repeat that on address 11 for good measure, if it'll let you. Then clear codes on 11, then 01, then see what you get.

If that doesn't help, I'm not seeing an obvious cause, but the diagnostic picture here is a bit muddy with the data you've given us so far. I see the immobilizer faults, but I'm not sure they're in-play based on the freeze-frame data, the timeline you described, and the nature of this particular fault. Please perform the following steps:

1. Ignition on
2. Connect to these individual modules and press the Clear DTCs button: 02, 03, 05, 15, 34, 11, 01. Do it in that exact order, and do it even if there are no faults shown.
3. Ignition off, wait 5 seconds or so
4. Ignition on, start the car
5. Take a complete Auto-Scan of the car while it's running, and share the complete un-edited resulting scan here in this thread

Also, bearing in mind there's more stuff on the Powertrain CAN than just the ECUs, can you explain more about the history of this vehicle and any other replacements or repairs that have been done? Also, why did you feel the need to replace one of the ECUs? Do you still have the old one?

If an immobilizer is not married, the VAG controllers will pervasively lie with a coding error code too!

IMMOBILIZER NOT AUTHORIZED!

The autoscan was done BEFORE I adapted the ECU. I have since adapted it and started the car. The Immobolizer code is no longer relevant. (The most recent full autoscan I had was this one prior to adaptation. The reason I didn't post it right away is because I was afraid it would cause confusion. And it obviously did.) The code I am trying to resolve is the one mentioned in the original post.

The ECU is now adapted and displays the correct VIN info and the car starts.

Since I bought the car three years ago, I had been getting a wide variety of intermittent faults on ECU1. None of the faults ever seemed to be related to each other and when I investigated the components related to the faults, I couldn't find anything wrong. As a last resort, I pulled the ECU and found that the pins in one area of the ECU were gunked up and corroded. When I went back and looked at old scans, I discovered that I could trace pretty much all of the faults back to pins 81-97 which coincidentally was the group of pins that were corroded. I carefully cleaned them with DeoxIT but they showed pretty severe corrosion. Cleaning them (along with the female connector) helped quite a bit but still did not completely eliminate the issue. I tried to find someone who could repair/replace the pins but was unsuccessful. I found the new ECU at a good price and decided to replace it since I knew that corrosion isn't going to get any better. After swapping out the ECU, I tried starting the car and that's when I got the Immobilizer fault. At the time I didn't realize that the new ECU had to be adapted.

In terms of repairs, it's a Phaeton, so I've done LOTS of repairs . Most of them I would think are unrelated to this issue. Probably the most recent and most possibly related to this was I had a coil pack fail (started smoldering). (I don't think the PO bothered having them replaced under the VW recall.) I changed all 12 coil packs and plugs.

If an immobilizer is not married, the VAG controllers will pervasively lie with a coding error code too!

Agreed that incomplete Immo work could cause weird stuff, but I had read his earlier post to mean the Auto-Scan may have been taken before his Immo matching (hence my comment about timeline). That's why I had asked him to put the car into a known state and then take a new Auto-Scan so we could see what was really happening.

As an unrelated side conversation, I'd be curious who you bought the car from. It's been shown some post-sale love, either by you or one of the previous owners: it has the most current infotainment/nav firmware, and the air suspension has been lowered 10mm. The latter is a popular DIY mod.

None of the faults ever seemed to be related to each other and when I investigated the components related to the faults, I couldn't find anything wrong. As a last resort, I pulled the ECU and found that the pins in one area of the ECU were gunked up and corroded. When I went back and looked at old scans, I discovered that I could trace pretty much all of the faults back to pins 81-97 which coincidentally was the group of pins that were corroded. I carefully cleaned them with DeoxIT but they showed pretty severe corrosion. I agree with your decision to replace the ECU in this case.

I found the new ECU at a good price and decided to replace it since I knew that corrosion isn't going to get any better. After swapping out the ECU, I tried starting the car and that's when I got the Immobilizer fault. At the time I didn't realize that the new ECU had to be adapted.

What's the provenance of the new ECU? Dealer, aftermarket? Curious if it came straight from VW, or maybe do we have something weird happening from the ECU being reflashed from another engine type.

In terms of repairs, it's a Phaeton, so I've done LOTS of repairs .

I was in a hurry and forgot about the cruise control enable login. I just tried it and it seems to have worked. Started the car briefly and CEL did not come on immediately like it did before and no stored codes. I'll take to work tomorrow and see if it's off for good. I'm curious what the cruise control enable is and why it's related to the ECU (i.e. why it would throw a code).

The only history I have is that the car was purchased new in Indianapolis by the then-President of AAA-North America. I'm not sure if it was his car or (more likely) a company vehicle, but it was all dealer-serviced during the first 3-4 years. I imagine that's where the software updates were done but not sure. He sold it to a guy In Pittsburgh who loves rare cars, but eventually realized that owning a Phaeton was a lifestyle. He was able to do basic maintenance but the Phaeton needs much, much more than basic maintenance. I think the car was driving him to the poorhouse. It popped up on a Craigslist search the week before I was to drop off my son for his Freshman year at WVU in Morgantown, WV. I managed to convince my wife that we needed a 6th VW and we drove up to Pittsburgh that weekend and bought it in Sept. 2017.

Although I know it can be done fairly easily, I did not lower it and did not realize it had been lowered. It's hard enough fitting into a parking space with this overgrown Passat without destroying the lower part of the bumper on a curb.

I bought the ECU online as a Genuine VW part. I believe it was from a dealer's internet storefront. I do remember that it came in the VW packaging. I will see if I can find the specifics. I know for certain that it had the VW label with the correct p/n on it (07C906018C) which I double-checked before installing it.

I'll report back after the 20-mile drive to work (in 6-1/2 hours...)

This is why when a genuine "data transfer" is done, it is better because it handles all of this, including the legacy DTC records for observation!
