Touch Control MFSW retrofit on a GTE

Hi all I'd like to fit a touch control MFSW from a golf MK8 to my 2017 Golf GTE but I don't know were to start with making it work .. i,ve had it fitted and had lots of faults on the dash which I thought was strange as they both use Lin control.. any thoughts please...

you are entering totally uncharted territory, and my personal opinion is that I highly expect the mk8 MFSW NOT to work on the mk7.

Hi there is a retrofitter here in the UK who sells the MFSW at a ridicules cost and has got them working on Passat B8 and T6.. so I thought I would be clever and buy from his supplier...He won't give me any help as you can expect ...

Best guess is that the steering wheel control module needs to upgraded as well and most likely the slip ring. And the new touch button MFSW has been installed to Passat B8 and T6 as you wrote, so it should work on other MQB chassis cars as well. Just need to find the correct combo of things.

@A4NOY: If I can add a personal opinion to the other views already provided, the MFSW arrangement on a MQB platform vehicle is deceptively simple in that while it has connections via the clock spring and the hex16 module, these have no effect there. These connections are just a wiring route; simply a way of getting the MFSW signal to the hex19 module (because the MFSW is a LIN slave of J533 on MQB cars - unlike in previous model Golfs where it was a slave of J527).

So- I suspect the biggest risk with your "courageous" project is the compatibility of your mk7 CAN gateway module with the mk8 MFSW!! Changing the hex19 module (while physically easy) is non-trivial from a coding perspective because of Component Protection complications and the need to visit a dealer (or if not, visit someone else with FAZIT connectivity)!

@DV52 You're right as usual

Looking at few autoscans, the new platform seems to have a different layout vs previous MQB like you wrote. There's not a MFSW steering control module anymore but those functions are directly controlled by CAN gateway.
So that might make the retrofit more involved than usual. First of all new gateway is not just protected with CP but it also has the SFD scheme and now what happens to that if you put the module to a car that is not built for the SFD at all.

@downtime: Very true -but I wasn't suggesting the possibility of using a Gateway module from a MQB37W vehicle. Rather, I was contemplating whether another variant of mk7/mk7.5 hex19 module would be a better match to a mk8 MFSW (I don't know)!

In my response, I deliberately didn't entertain the risk of the MFSW on the mk8 no longer being a LIN slave to CAN Gateway -I haven't seen a CAN network diagram for a mk8, but that's also possible.

Lot's of unknowns -lots of interesting problems to solve for such a courageous project!!

@NEtech : Interesting - thanks for posting. So you are suggesting that on a mk8, J527 has been relegated from a directly CAN connected module on mk7/7.5 - to being a LIN slave of the BCM? Increases the role of the BCM further-wonder whether this will be a trend on future MQB models (i.e. a greater emphasis on distributed module intelligence, rather than centralized CAN communication)?

As these cars get more sophisticated, the demands on a centralized CAN bus increases - another option to manage increased traffic on the CAN network probably might be to add more buses, but I guess eventually the congestion coalesces at J533. I suppose greater distributed module intelligence (i.e. more LIN buses) is preferable where the slave module activity is simple - maybe?

Have you seen a SSP for the mk8?

New Passat wheel can be made to work in MK7, however airbag wiring needs to be altered. See vid below

If you thinking about MK8 wheel - that can be made to work as well, but coding is required

ok i did yestreday the same retrofit so the MFSW MK8 on Passat B8 and result all butt5ons works except the distance for acc and the sped limiter
after my research i cam out with 2 conclusions:
one told me about the right coding in the steering wheel must be done
other one told me that the right coding must be done in 19

so tell now im still hoping to find the right pad to the right solution

any tips or hints i appreciated guys

Got new MFSW with touch button and ACC was not there ...but it was on PCB
after compare coding , I enable ACC

Like Spacewalker wrote as well, both must be coded. But to get the ACC button lighted up and working you need to change the respective adaptation channel in the module 19 CAN gateway. There's adaptation channels for MFL multifunction steering wheel. Change ACC adaptation channel from automatic -> Activated.

Would be good to see autoscan from your car in it’s current state. The touch wheel needs a gateway to be 3q0 AC or later for these channels to be there.
