A3 2009 (8P) ABS Unit Partial Replacement Possible?

Howdy, everyone. I have an A3 with an ailing ABS unit (dealership confirmed and wants 2400 to swap it out). Partial VIN: waukd98p99aXXXXXX I'm guessing that their fix includes both the controller module and the pump that's attached to it given the cost (about 2k for the part), plus labor. I've also seen the controller part alone for around 700-800, which is much more reasonable. I was curious if it's possible to swap just that part and if so, if it's necessary to mess with the pump at all. If the pump must be disconnected, I'm assuming I'll have to bleed the system, which is fine, I just want to avoid it if I can. Also, I've read that some VCDS mojo (I have the USB cable version) is needed after the new part is installed with steering angle sensors and other unswapped parts. Does anyone have a tutorial on that piece of the process?

Without knowing the exact part number of the ABS unit fitted to your A3 it's likely to be difficult/impossible to answer that question until you past a full unedited VCDS Auto-Scan of your A3.

it depends what the fault is
ABS faults can be electrical in the controller or can mechanical in the aluminium section, or just be the pump motor its self
Dealerships are not able to replace part of the pump
Without a fault code scan to see what the codes are no one can answer your question

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. Here's the full report.

I didn't include it initially as I was asking mainly for a yes/no on "can you only swap the module without the pump?" as that will determine if I do this myself or have the Audi dealership do it given that the cost of the pump+module assembly negates any savings a DIY job would accomplish. Also, it seems like a DIY might be difficult/impossible since when I looked for the part, the passenger-side strut tower sort of covers the unit and with a 3.2 engine, there's not a ton of room to work. Does anyone who's done this successfully care to weigh in here?
