Does the 2017 Golf R (USA spec) have an optical MOST bus? I have a DTC in address 5F that mentions "Optical Data Bus" which led me to try doing this https://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/optical-bus.php but I receive the attached error message when doing so (same exact error regardless of 3dB option): "The vehicle either does not support this function, or there was an error during the test."

Depending on how it's equipped, it might, but it's not of the level of complexity as the traditional MMI optical bus.

Assuming this car actually has a separate sound-system amp, I would look at why it's off-line. Check fuses and power to it first and foremost.

Thanks. Actually, address 47 not being reachable is intermittent, therefore it's not a fuse but I suppose it could be wiring. However, I have strong reasons to believe that it's software-related rather than intermittent due to vibration/etc., because the entire infotainment system freezes every 8 minutes or so. I'm slightly out of warranty so I'm in talks with VW about a goodwill repair but trying to self-diagnose as much as possible in parallel.

When it freezes, music stops, the screen turns off, and no buttons do anything except holding down the infotainment power button for some 15 seconds, which brings it back to life for another 8 minutes.

Address 47 not being reachable occurs only when the system is actually frozen. The other codes in address 5F persist.

Does the 2017 Golf R (USA spec) have an optical MOST bus? I have a DTC in address 5F that mentions "Optical Data Bus" which led me to try doing this https://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/optical-bus.php but I receive the attached error message when doing so (same exact error regardless of 3dB option): "The vehicle either does not support this function, or there was an error during the test."
@yeahforbes : For obvious reasons related in the main to my residency on a far away continent in the very deep south - I'm not qualified to answer your first question!! :D

However, it does appear from the value of the long-code string on the hex5F module in your auto-scan that the MIB in your car has MOST activated and based on the software switches on this module, the MIB expects that an external amplifier (which the WD calls "J525") will manage audio.

Notwithstanding the intermittent nature of the hex47 DTC, IMO it's still worth checking the fuse to J525 to ensure that it's seated correctly. According to my WD (which unfortunately is RoW), J525 is the only device protected by the fuse, so a wonky fuse will only affect the external amplifier.

The other "easy try" might be to check the physical environment for J525 for stuff like water ingress and also check the integrity of the connector on the rear of the module - which is located under the driver seat like this:

@DV52 Thanks for the tips! By any chance do you mean J525 each time you say J585? I ask because I've just checked a few fuse diagrams and none of them mention J585, but they do mention J525 (as does your under-driver-seat diagram) being at fuse position 27.

I looked under the seat and found the optical connection (photo attached). Definitely no water or similar peril. I re-seated the optical, and wanted to re-seat the wiring harness, but I can't figure out that ridiculous pink clip :banghead:

I also checked the fuse, and to be 100% certain, I swapped it with another identical fuse.

I then went for a drive. The problem was the same as before, with the screen and sound shutting off (actually, mostly rebooting on its own, but not always) at roughly 8 minute intervals. Sometimes 4 minutes, sometimes 13 minutes, etc.

I should also mention that this all started back in March, but then in early April it went back to normal until a few days ago when it started happening again.

The pink clip has a keep on the end. If I recall correctly you push the keep down and then the pink lever can be pulled which releases the connector evenly. Being familiar with that clip as I have replaced that unit as part of an upgrade, it is a stout quality connector and IMO the probablility of a bad connection in that connector approaches zero. Based on the symptoms of the rebooting it sounds like the 5F infotainment unit (glovebox headunit) has gone. Interesting your scan shows the 47 soundsystem cannot be reached (amp under seat). Sorry, cannot be 100% sure if that could be related to the head unit. If it is the headunit, I would buy a used unit of same part number and replace. You will need a VAS5054 with OKI chip set and D-Link Dub E100 Network Adapter, there are a few folks on the MK7 Golf forum who rent out or you can purchase. Mine is currently rented. Someone with ODIS account and knowledge can remove component protection remotely with VAS5054 and then reinstall your functional enablement codes (FeC) applicable to your VIN. So for approximately $200 for used head unit (salvage yard or eBay). Rental is usually around $30, and the guy I use is 85Euro/hour when everything is working and it would likely be done in under an hour.

I also vouch for a defective 5F unit. as Geoge said, if you replace it with the VERY SAME part number, and you have the tools, you'll be back on track very soon.

I agree with the 5F suggestions but if the OP doesn't mind driving without any sound just to see if the screen / system still goes down he could install a loop tool at the amp. I'm just not sure if the old/standard Audi loop is the same tool or not. This was the Audi part number:


I would need the VIN to dig deeper and check PL24.​

Either way, the loop test may help confirm if the failure is at 47 or 5F before purchasing a control module. If it still crashes with 47 looped you know 5F is the bad guy.

To clarify, the autoscan only shows that "47 cannot be reached" if I wait for the MIB to freeze (~8 minutes) and autoscan while it is frozen. If I autoscan while the MIB is operational (for example, right after key-on, or right after holding the MIB power button to reset it), then 47 can be reached just fine, and it never has any DTCs. But I can read the DTCs in 5F any time, regardless of whether it's frozen.

As for junkyard/ebay/ODIS/VAS5054/etc, that is what I will explore if VWoA declines my goodwill request.

I would give that Amazon thing a shot! Worst case it doesn't work and you return it -or- toss it in the tool box and use it on a car it does work on one day in the future.

In regards to the screen shot, the MK7 doesn't use a traditional MMI optical bus system like an Audi where the 19-CAN Gateway is the ringleader. Instead, you have a master 5F and a slave 47 (when applicable/installed) and 19 is not involved (which is why VCDS can't ping 19 for the data). For instance my prior Alltrack (code name WaterTrack) had 47 installed and the MOST bus was literally a point A to B connection (rather than a real loop with 3 - 9 control modules):


Neither of my current Mk7s have 47 sound system so that's a wiring diag clip from based on the 2017 VIN in the above scan. I suspect yours would be similar, if not identical, due to the MIB2 2017 NAR config.

You could also code out the external amplifier. If 5F goes into reboot after coding out and reboot, head unit problem is not related to external amplifier.

5F control module, Long coding, Byte 4-7, 2 channel 4 passive speakers, then go to Byte 11 and change to internal sound system (from external). Byte 19 Most Off (from On), Reboot, then see if 5f has reboot problem.


You may ask dealer for software update as that too could resolve your issue. Just a thought, separate from one above.

PS: Did not intend to be the bearer of bad news on replacement of your head unit, and mentioned alternative used replacement as an options to a $1,300 new head unit and couple hours of shop time from dealer. Also, I do feel your pain. I recently had to replace my head unit as it would intermittently turn on randomly turning on external amplifier draining my battery. No parasitic leakage just total random turn on once every few days or so. Maddening to troubleshoot. Took a year of disconnecting battery after drives until I happened to be in car when head unit turned on. Put in switch inline with fuse to infotainment to verify that it was the head unit. Turned switch off after use and no battery drain for a month. Software upgrade may have resolved, but I was so sick of the problem I changed head unit.

@Dana: I assume that your comment about the ring-circuit-break-wire topology relates more to MQB platform vehicles, rather than to the distinction between Mk7 and Audi vehicles. The arrangement in the WD for my Audi A3 8V (see below) confirms that J533 is not part of the physical wire circuit for the MOST diagnostic function.

However, page 26 0f SSP 519 (The Infotainment System in the Golf 2013 Part II) which describes the MOST system on MQB golf mk7 says the following:
Diagnostics and working on the MOST150 data bus
The procedure for ring circuit break diagnostics is primarily the same as for the check plan for the Touareg 2011.
One difference with the Golf 2013 is that, due to the faster transmission and reception units, it is necessary to use
a modified tool: the optical replacement control unit VAS 6778.


Now, Page 24 of SSP 473 ( Infotainment in the Touareg 2011) which describes the service arrangement for MOST on the PL71 platform car shows "a traditional MMI optical bus system" topology for the ring-circuit-break-wires (i.e. where J533 is the master).

So, notwithstanding the different role of J794 as the master for ring-circuit-break detection on MQB platform cars, I wonder for the purposes of user diagnosis whether J533 is still involved? Perhaps the fault records are transferred via CAN messages to the hex19 module for this purpose - I'm not sure?

I just went to try this, but I'm holding off for now because the coding options aren't completely aligned with your suggestion, although bytes 11 and 19 are much more aligned if I use the experimental long coding helper. Photos attached.

Pardon, understand they are not completely aligned, but the idea is to use the internal amp in your headunit which will put power to pins connected to nothing rather then having the signal sent via fiber optic to your external amplifier.

Copy your current coding settings and save. You will put them back once you have completed this test to verify failure of 5F in unrelated to 47 soundsystem. I have RossTech micro can so I am not sure if I can get to experimental settings. How do you toggle to experimental long coding helper?

I just checked my settings, and compared to your screen shots. I had the Fender, but removed for external amplifier and DSP.

From your screen shots:

Byte 4 in standard mode from “sound system installed” to “4 channels 8 passive speakers” (any choice but sound system installed).

Byte 11 in standard mode to “internal sound system active”

Byte 19, bit 5 in experimental mode: uncheck “Most On” I just checked my byte 19 and I did not have the bit 5 option.

Reboot. Test the unit, it will not make any sound, but if it reboots after a few minutes you should know the headunit is not being effected by soundsystem and is the problem. From there you can put back your original coding. If it doesn't reboot, then it may be related to external amplifier.

@DV52 Yeah, I was referring to the early (old school) Audi models from the D3 through the MLB based platform which used the 4E0 973 802 loop referenced on the manual page and briefly in video the OP was referring to.

Prior to this thread I had not received a MQB/Mk7 based optical bus diagnostics inquiry to date so I'm not entirely familiar with the diagnostic either. Due to the high failure rate of those 5F units I suspect many are failing within warranty which is why we may not be receiving many troubleshooting inquiries. If that's the case it will be a matter of time however @George Ab's entirely different, and far more simple, approach to just code it out is probably the best way to go since this was a small (2 module) loop!

I took a look at that fancy VAS6778 tool you referenced and it was not only eye opening from an education point of view (I should refresh myself on those SSPs) but look at the list price :eek:


If this type of J794 unit supports a ring break diag directly we may be able to implement that into VCDS one day but I don't know how difficult the results will be to interpret.

For instance, it looks like most are Adapted to IDE03902-Automatic ring break diagnostic,No automatic start and Basic Settings [*IDE01857-ENG114972*] Start ring break diagnostic - Routine Control Option may be supported even without an ADP change but at that point would a user then interpret Adv MVBs like these
