Hello I have a 2020 Audi A3 that I upgraded to have the virtual cockpit (mostly done, still have a check engine light as seen in the attached autoscans). The next step is upgrading the glove box mounted MMI to include factory navigation. I bought a nav enabled MMI on eBay from an A3 with virtual cockpit so I have all the necessary connections. I’m still pretty new to VCDS, I was hoping someone could help me interpret my errors and help me configure this to my car. I know it still has component protection enabled; what is the best way to unlock it? Any help is greatly appreciated, original MMI auotscan and new MMI Nav Plus autoscans attached. Thank you!

@hro0250 : Yes, your first task is certainly to deal with the Component Protection error. Alas, this DTC can only be deleted (in the official manner) by a visit to a dealer or any workshop that has access to VAG's FAZIT facility (there are "unofficial" service providers that are sometimes used to hack CP errors, but I can't recommend any of these).

The other observation that I would make regarding your 2 x auto-scans is the long code string comparison below for the hex5F module:

As you can see, there are lots of differences in the Byte values. Clearly the "new MMI" is much more functionally rich than the factory unit - however some of the facilities that are enabled in the new MMI will need matching software switches (and perhaps adaptation channels) enabled in other modules to work successfully)

But, in respect of new digital instrument cluster (and the factory fitted hex47 module - which is strangly missing from your 2nd auto-scan?), I note that Byte 19, Bit 5 (highlighted) on the new MMI is not set. This is the software switch that enables MOST - which is the optical fiber protocol that runs both the digital version of the hex17 module and the hex47 module. I suggest that you set this Bit. And to complete the alignment of the new MMI to the hex47 module, perhaps set Byte 4 and Byte 5 to hex00 - then clear the DTCs and re-post another autoscan.

PS: I hope that you had the good fortune to make an admap of your factory fitted hex5F module before its removal because it will be useful in aligning the adaptation channel settings on your new MMI. If not, perhaps you might consider temporarily re-connecting the old module and making an admap.

Fortunately I just had the new module plugged in long enough to grab this scan, my OEM unit is back in now so I can grab an admap. Can any programming be done before I have the component protection removed? This step is intimidating to me because I paid for a service to remove it from the company I purchased my VC from, and I haven't had a great experience with them. Are dealerships usually understanding/helpful with removing component protection?

Dealing with CP errors using unofficial service providers varies greatly and the effects likewise can vary greatly - but "hacked" units often can leave CP errors present in diagnostic scans whilst resolving the more practical effects of these DTCs - like the usual problem of no sound!

Given that you have had the CP error "hacked", perhaps the more prudent way forward is to proceed with fixing the other issues first - that is, proceed as if there were no CP errors!!

I don't know what the dynamic for CP removal is like up there in the land-of-the-free!! However, down here in the Antipodes where dealers tend to be more hmm........... let me tactfully say "self-important", CP removal can be problematic. Some won't provide the service at all if the dealer doesn't also retrofit the radio (and in some cases, if the retrofit isn't with a brand new unit)!

But more importantly, if your new unit has been hacked by an unofficial service provider and depending on how the module firmware was modified - the dealer's process might not work anyway - because the official ODIS guided process for CP removal assumes the standard VAG firmware in the MIB unit

I am going to skip the dealership because around here they aren't super willing to help, but there are a lot of VW/Audi independent specialists who might be able to help. Right now I have a VC with the DTC saying it lost communication with the engine control module, and to my understanding, that can only be solved with a brand new VC programmed for my car before it reaches 100km. I currently have the factory radio in and it is working perfectly, however the VC requires an additional connection to be fully functional, so I purchased a full spec MMI out of a salvaged A3 with VC.

I have no idea if they used an unofficial software to install/unlock my virtual cockpit. I tried to be hands-off and let them do it for me because that was the only upgrade I planned for this car. Then after they left it unfinished it left me searching for how to fix it myself, and lead me here. I was then made aware of a higher spec MMI unit, so I decided to add that because they made it seem as though that would solve my VC issues. I was told, on this forum, that the only way to fix my VC is to buy a brand new one instead of the one out of a salvage car that the company provided me, and have it configured for my car as new. I'm in a bit of a bind because I have a half-functional VC with DTCs and no idea how to fix it. I would ideally like to have both functional, I just am learning on the fly. So I appreciate all the help.

Oh, I should mention, the DTC on the virtual cockpit leaves the check engine light on. I had my first oil change on the car this weekend, which I always do myself, so I went in with VCDS to reset my service internal reminder, and I was alerted by VCDS that the action cannot be preformed because the module is not configured. So now I have a check engine light, and a service reminder warning perpetually stuck on.

I would put my OEM gauge cluster back at this point and cut my losses if I didn't have to Dremel out and cut the dash behind the old gauge cluster to make the VC unit fit...

I'm really up a creek here, no paddles in sight.
