How to disable auto re-lock (or extend time) after unlocking car with key fob?

Hello all,

I've got a 2014 VW TDI Sportwagen. Whenever I unlock the car with the key fob (remote button), it will only stay unlocked for about 30 seconds, before the car automatically relocks all the doors again. This tends to be inconvenient and/or annoying for me at times, and I would like to disable this "auto re-lock" function, if possible. Or if it can't be shut off, at least extend the amount of time the car stays unlocked before it automatically re-locks itself.

I've done some searching on this, but so far have not found any definitive content or answers. So does anybody here know if such a thing is possible w/ these cars (i.e. to disable, and/or extend time before, car automatically relocks the doors), and if so, how to do it? Thanks!

We're gonna need to see a full unedited VCDS Auto-Scan of your Sportwagen to see if there is a way to disable/delay autolock.

BTW what I've learnt to do in 20+ years of VAG ownership is just to open and close a door to prevent the autolock happening.

Yes, am aware that if you open a car door after unlocking remotely w/ the key fob, it won't relock after that. However, my car is parked in a separated garage, and the keys normally hang inside the house. Sometimes I want to load something in the car for later (or etc. / similar), but am not wanting or needing to take keys along with me. In cases like that, I always have to hustle a bit, before the stupid car can (unnecessarily) automatically re-lock itself.

And really, if I command a car to unlock, I want it to stay unlocked, period -- this is the way all the other cars I have ever owned worked. I find the TDI's auto re-lock function to mainly just serve as a source of annoyance to me...

This has been a recurring theme with VAG cars "forever". I do not think it's possible. If you open a door, the car will not re-lock. The reason the car re-locks after 30 seconds or so if you do not open a door is to keep it from sitting unlocked indefinitely if it is inadvertently unlocked via the remote, for example if you unintentionally press the unlock button when putting the key in your pocket.

Thank you sir! Bummer that it can't be disabled or modified -- but at least I don't have to keep searching for a non-existent procedure any more.

BTW, I just discovered that my wife's 2020 Nissan Pathfinder does the same thing, albeit it takes about twice as long for the doors to relock on hers (about a minute or so, vs. approx. 30 seconds on the TDI). I guess it's just one of those "blessings/curses" of the ongoing automation in things... :-)

I basically never lock my cars when they are parked at home, but you must understand ze German mentality: I've had Germans tell me it is illegal to leave a parked car unlocked there. I'm not certain that this is actually true, but if enough people, particularly the guys in the white lab coats who write the specifications for how the cars vill function, believe it....

Our garage is actually more of a shed (no doors), but it's also in back of the house and a long ways from the street. So yes, we've always felt comfortable leaving car(s) unlocked at times in the garage or on the back patio, at least during the daytime and when we're home. We do always lock them up at in the evenings and/or when we're gone, though, as a matter of routine.

I can certainly understand the automatic re-lock feature being desirable for certain locations and circumstances, but am still a bit surprised that it can't be turned on and off / modified, like a lot of the other safety features available and built in to these cars (e.g. autolock while driving). There are times when it's definitely not needed at all, and then it mainly serves as a source of annoyance, like I noted earlier. One of those odd things you just have to learn to live with in these cars though, I guess. *sigh* :-)
