2016 Touareg 7P6 : kessy / keyfob issues

Hello

I recently bought a used 2016 touareg with Kessy.
At time of purchase, remote was working strange, we had in mind it was related to dying batteries, need to be very close to the vehicule to lock/unlock
touching handles is sporadically working. Works better when key is not in the pocket.
Passenger side seems to work a little bit better.
both keys are working the same.
No fault codes

Left the car at my local vw dealer when back home (1000k away from purchase location) to fix. Seller dealer agreed to pay for the repair.
They ordered a new key, I didn't understand why, but they claimed it happens both key are failing... (I don't agree with that, but I let the dealer go ahead).
2 weeks later, the freshly delivered key is obviously working as the 2 old ones...

Since, they are "doing tests" and are troubleshooting for 2 days... I don't understand what they are doing.

So I decided to look closely after the erwin diagrams, and I may figured out something.

1) my understanding is when touching the handle, local door antenna is telling the key to open the car (like pressing the button on the key fob). at this time we are seeing the led on the remote flashing (even when the door is not opening). The signal is emitted from the key fob to the remote control antenna, located in the rear passenger fixed window. We can see the wire within the glass.
--> is that correct ?

2) If the antenna is not connected or broken (within the glass, or the wire connecting the glass to the antenna module is cut, key fob range will be very poor, especially when on the other side of the car (driver's door as an exemple)
--> is that correct ?

3) in this case, antenna module located in the bottom of the glass (passenger side), within the trunk space, is working fine, which explains why we do not see any fault
--> is that correct ?

So maybe my issue is only related to a bad cabling connection between antenna module and glass antenna.

what do you think ?

Please include a full Auto-Scan when asking for assistance, it provides everyone with specific details about the vehicle in question.

The keyless entry function tends to be "all or nothing", in other words, if the antenna in the passenger front door fails (open circuit), then the system as a whole will not work. I suspect this is a case of the car not knowing the difference between a random broken wire VS an attack on the vehicle by a thief. I would expect fault codes in the Kessy if there is any sort of antenna issue. If there are none, possible key(s) issue, or maybe the Kessy itself.... difficult say based on current data.

Hello,
quick follow up on this.
Since the car is still at the dealer I can't get an auto-scan.
Despite my ask to check the amplifier and antenna at the bottom of the rear window, they are going to change the central locking module.
If the kessy module were faulty, I'm sure we should get codes.
Here we don't.

Tech disconnected the window antenna from the amplifier, range drops, he needed to be very close the the module to lock/unlock.
from my perspective this prove the central locking module is working correctly by sending the signal to the rear of the car.
My guess is the antenna amplifier is died, signal is not amplified resulting in poor opening distance.
Amplifier antenna PID is : 7P6035552P

I asked them to order it at the same time they are ordering the whole kessy unit to give it a try.
But, I'm sure they will not considering they are dumbly following vw hotline guidelines...

The Antenna Diagram linked in post #1 and the Antenna PN (7P6035552P) mentioned above are for the radio (RNS) system rather than the KESSY system.

Out of those 4 antennas shown in PL24 the wiring diagram component identifiers are:

R137 - Luggage compartment aerial for entry and start system
R138 - Interior aerial 1 for entry and start system
R200 - Left aerial for entry and start authorisation
R201 - Right aerial for entry and start authorisation

If you have all of the documents saved from your erWin subscription I would recheck them looking for Comfort/KESSY specific info. The system overview that should be more helpful would look more like this:

There may be an overview in the SSP as well.

Since there aren't any fault codes I can see why they want to replace BCM2 at this point. Faulty antennas usually set DTCs (and even if they don't they are easy to swap while testing since all of them are the same part number).

It's strange because your schemes is describing well different antennas compare to the eRwin scheme I looked to.

In the erwin diagram I posted, we can see the module #3 is related to both radio and central locking system.
however vw tech didn't tried to swap antenna amplifier to check...

This one is dedicated to start authorization.
From time to time the key isn't detected when in the cabin. It can be while driving, or when trying to start the engine with key in the pocket.
When not detected, I'm hearing an electrical noise (hard to describe...) for few seconds then MFD send "key not detected"

Maybe this can explain a more "global" issue leading to confort module replacement.

I think you're right, the erwin document I have is not talking about kessy at all.

That sounds like R138 is malfunctioning but I would have expected a fault code for it. If there isn't one that may be directing you back to failed KESSY/BCM2.

If the key is not recognized properly (at times) from inside I suspect the noise you are hearing is the ESCL which lives at the bottom of the steering column. I suppose another possibility is BCM2 but I don't think the control module makes an audible noise so you could be hearing a relay in that general area instead.

Do keep us posted on the outcome and try to post a scan if you have one saved after you purchased the vehicle and before it went to the dealer.

Finally !
Just got the car back. The unit (I think it's the BCM2 module) is ordered and should be there in 2 weeks.

You will find below the auto scan I did when I bought the car.
few notes :
1) the car sat for a while inside the dealer. I think it run out a battery, explaining few errors
2) I cleared all errors, and nothing came back since.
3) the noise I'm hearing is coming from the rear vent (located at the bottom of the center arm rest). 100% sure. It only happen when I run the car with the key on my pocket (not in the key slot)

I forgot to add, I tested with a noco battery tender to be sure the issue is not related to the car battery.

Quick update...
Comfort module has been replaced (and possibly other parts, but I can't verify I didn't get the invoice yet).
Now working great.

It seems the unit was defective, but not sending any fault. Sound strange to me, but why not... Maybe amplifier module within the BCM was defective ?
Maybe wiring was incorrect and swapping the module solve this ?

Unfortunately I do not have strong answers to share, but at least it's working

I can't send an auto-scan (just out from a back surgery), but I soon as I can I will get it !
