Hello,

I was gifted a 2004 Beetle GLS 1.8L Turbo with a few issues. The first issue I'm trying to tackle is the ABS light is on. I've connected a code reader to it and I get the error code U0121. I was also told that a VW dealership has previously diagnosed this car with a faulty ABS control modular.

After I got the the U0121 code I disconnected the ABS from the car and ordered a replacement used part (same part numbers).........After researching the ABS system a little more I realize I should have used the VAG system to scan the car prior to disconnecting everything to help determine the long coding for the ABS.

Flash forward. I have purchased the VCDS with Hex-V2. My question is should I reinstall the old ABS (has a failure to communicate modular) to maybe get the "long code" OR would I be able to determine the long code in order to program the new ABS to work with my beetle?

Thanks

When asking for assistance, you need to include a full Auto-Scan from the car so we have more details. If the original ABS module is dead, then have the replacement ABS module installed and post that Auto-Scan. 2004 Beetle won't have "long coding" which are Hexadecimal values. This car will use short coding which are 5 or 7 digits long, 0 to 9 values. We should be able to sort it out once we see a complete Auto-Scan.

Once the part comes in, I will install and conduct a auto-scan. I will follow up then. Thanks for the quick reply

So I've installed the ABS control modular/pump. It had the same part numbers as the original. Replacing it, removed the ABS warning light and check engine light from the dashboard. A new light came on, looks like it might be a Traction control light. It's a triangle with circled arrow around it. I've also ran and attached the Auto-Scan. Looks like there are a couple of other issues I need to take a look at as well.

The ABS came off a 2005 new beetle, how do I know if it's setup correctly for my 2004 model?

Here is the scan:

From what I understand it still has the original transmission. The engine was replaced a few years ago, but it's always been an automatic trans. Where are you pulling this info from?

You need to do a Steering Angle Sensor calibration.

See here:

-Uwe-
I followed the calibration, it cleared the fault. Thanks.

I ran the VIN through Partslink24 and it shows the trans being an automatic, but your Auto-Scan doesn't have a transmission in it.

Would there be a reason why the transmission wasn't included? I ran a few others with similar reports.

Yeah sure something going on being nefarious FOD or with the K line because of the ABS module creating interference?

Unplug ABS and see if Trans wakes up in scan yet?

Ecu is for automatic and correct + coded for it.
ABS module correct part number too!

Wiring harness issue likely did you qualify tracks?

Why was ABS module changed, have a legacy scan?

Can I just remove power to the ABS module (fuse box connector) or do I have to remove the larger connector on the module? It's a PITA to get at the module connector. Also I don't have previous scans or history on why the original ABS quit communicating with ECU.

I haven't started tracing wires yet, but it looks like I might have to start investigating the harness.

I suspect the TCM is talking to some extend otherwise ECM, cluster and Gateway most likely would be flagging codes for no TCM.... but is the TCM talking to a scan tool?

Start VCDS, then [Select] followed by [02-Auto Trans] and see if you get communication.
