Issue in using VCDS when no controller label available for engine - 01 and engine - 11

New user with the VCDS so I have limited experience but I have spoken with Ross-Tech already and their suggestion is to try the Forum to see if anyone can assist.

The issue is that VCDS says there is no ‘label file’ for engine – 01 and engine – 11, I get ‘Labels: REDIR FAIL!’.

Car is a 2008 Audi Q7 4.2 TDI twin turbo V8.

If I am understanding this correctly then this is because the dual controllers (EDC16s I believe) on this car are not common and VCDS does not have a ‘label file’ created for these controllers.

As a result of this there is no functional capacity for the VCDS 'advanced measuring values' and that function is greyed out. The other problem is that while the ‘measuring blocks’ function is available, there is no reference as to what each measuring block relates to. Further, the VCDS is not sure what the data being returned within each block actually is a measurement of and can only have a guess.

I can input measuring block numbers into the ‘measuring blocks’ function and the VCDS will return 4 values but I am not sure what most of these relate to.

This makes it difficult then to go looking for the problem that is causing the engine to go into limp mode with no error codes being thrown. For example, if I want to go and find turbo boost values then I am not sure what measuring block number to input? And even if I did then the VCDS may not specify what the 4 data values being displayed are a measurement of – in other words, the VCDS may not display which data is specified boost and which is actual boost.

The limp mode is occurring on hard acceleration after the engine reaches operating temperature. I am not sure why only after reaching operating temperature but perhaps the engine performance is restricted until operating temperature is reached meaning there is not the same load or fuel requirement by the engine until operating temperature is reached. Or perhaps, temperature is affecting something.

The engine has apparently been remapped. After investigation with a previous owner, he advised me he had the same problem and there were still no error codes after flashing the ECUs back to stock. I was not aware of the problem when I bought the car and it appears I have bought an inherited problem and I am trying to fix this.

Can anyone help with the use of the VCDS?

It's nearly inconceivable to me that an engine would go into limp mode without setting a DTC, unless of course the ECU software has been modified so as not to report faults. Are you quite certain that you have stock software in these ECUs at this point?

As for 'boost', what do you see in MVB 11?
I'm guessing based on another dual-ECU TDI that field 2 is the specified manifold pressure, field 3 is the measured pressure in bank 1, and field 4 is the measured pressure in bank 2.

Hi, it is my understanding the ECU has been remapped. However, after locating a previous owner he said that even after flashing the ECUs back to stock there were still no DTCs and the limp mode was still an issue. I had no idea the car was not standard when I bought it. Looks like I am stuck with a 'problem child'. Doing some research on the Net I have seen reference to another similar TDI not throwing DTCs and apparently it was a bad low pressure in tank fuel pump.

With the engine not running MVB 11 - field 1 is rpm; field 2 is 499.8 mbar; field 3 is 999.6 mbar; and field 4 is 999.6 mbar. That makes some sense then. Where might I find a reference list of MVBs for this other dual-ECU TDI that I could refer to?

It's not an issue with VCDS as it's working as it should. However, below is the MVB display group information from the same vintage A8 4E 4.2tdi BVN, and Basic Settings. I would like to think the A8 and Q7 are fairly similar, so hopefully some help.

Note MVB's 034 and 035 where there are Turbocharger fault bit codes.

It also quite simple to make a label file, and will be some useful homework for you as you're a new user!

The engine has apparently been remapped.
OP - are you 100% sure the ECUs have been restored to normal firmware? Did you have them restored or did the previous owner "tell you" that he had it done?

If the latter then the lack of DTCs in limp mode could suggest he may not be 100% open with you.

PetrolDave: This was not the most immediate previous owner but rather the owner before the last, so on the face of it he has no reason not to be honest. I also spoke with the tuner he used to remap the ECUs. The tuner verified he had flashed the ECUs back to stock to see if that would eliminate the limp mode but limp mode was still occurring and still no DTCs. The ECUs were then remapped again.

It's nearly inconceivable to me that an engine would go into limp mode without setting a DTC, unless of course the ECU software has been modified so as not to report faults.
my suggestion would be for you personally to get the ECUs restored to known genuine Audi firmware (even if it means going to an Audi dealer), clear all DTCs and see what the situation is then.

Yes, the ECUs were remapped again by the previous owner.

I am hesitant to flash it back to stock again if the previous owner already did this and there was no change. No issue with a stock map, it is just the costs keep mounting and I have already spent a considerable sum on this car trying to find the issue.

I am going to try and see whether the VCDS will assist before going to the next step.

I did graph measuring block 022 which I understand to be fuel pressure. The green line will be specified pressure and the yellow will be actual. You can see the yellow (actual) was consistent with the green (specified) until about half way along the time line. That is where I put the accelerator down and the engine went into limp mode.

Now I am not sure whether the yellow (actual) pressure falls away because the engine went into limp mode and the ECU said I don't need fuel or whether the drop in (actual) fuel pressure actually caused the limp mode.

I would suspect the later because the green line (specified pressure) does not drop but stays constant for a short period. Although, I am not sure why it would be so flat - at that point the specified fuel pressure is reading about 1650 bar given that the max vertical scale is set at 2000 bar.

Anyone know if this is normal?

I am going to try and see whether the VCDS will assist before going to the next step.
Since the engine is going into limp mode without there being any DTCs it seems extremely likely that the remapping has deleted some of the error checking/reporting in the ECU. Sometimes this is done by disabling the error reporting but sometimes by modifying the sensor inputs - if this second method has been done then any data you read from the ECU will be meaningless.

Fault finding with ECU firmware that is 'playing games' is likely to be a case of chasing your own tail, but you could just be the one person who strikes lucky (but don't bet on it).

So if the car is going into limp mode without throwing a DTC then the problem is going to be related to a DTC the tuner has deleted or the tuner has modified a sensor that measures some parameter that relates to the problem cause? Is that correct or am I oversimplifying things. I removed the MAF sensor the other day and that threw a DTC. So it would be helpful to know what the tuner deleted or modified? Thanks

I would have thought that deleting the error checking/reporting function means the ECU no longer checks or monitors the parameters relevant to that function and no matter what happens to those parameters/function then the ECU has no ability to check its status and consider whether that it is a danger (and limp the engine).

I can understand a parameter going out of spec (that is no longer being monitored) may cause an issue elsewhere but then that problem elsewhere should be reported? For example, exhaust parameters are no longer being checked but a restriction or temperature problem causes an increase in turbo temperature/pressure and that would cause an overboost that would be reported.

The checking/reporting for an overboost function could also be deleted but then the ECU would not be checking and would allow the engine to carry on regardless.

I am not trying to test anyone or be difficult, I am just trying to understand. Thanks

Simple answer, yes.

Full answer, it's the error REPORTING that gets disabled not the error CHECKING - so the error is still detected internally (which can cause limp mode) but the error isn't reported via the diagnostics.

Why is it done this way? Some of the tweaking that tuners do will result in what are really warnings not errors (e.g. boost higher than expected but still within safety limits) and they need to stop those warnings being reported via diagnostics. The side effect is that some real errors also go unreported - this is what it appears is happening in this case.

Hi, not sure if I may be posting this in the wrong forum section but I am hoping someone can give an opinion regarding the below log where the car has gone into limp mode.

The log was run using MVBs 001; 004; and 022.

At time stamp 22.68 in MVB 001 the injector quantity rises substantially from 23.8 to 40.6 mg/str. This would seem to be where I hit the accelerator WOT.

Then at time stamp 22.81 In MVB 004, the idle stabilization increases substantially from 4 to 10.1 degrees. And soon after at time stamp 23.68 in MVB 022, the actual fuel pressure then begins to drop off very quickly despite specified fuel pressure staying high.

After the idle stabilization returns to previous figures, the actual fuel pressure then begins to rise again.

My question is what would cause the idle stabilization to increase like that?

Would this be something related to cam timing or similar?
