Am I right in guessing that the first three codes relate to timing chain...and should I be worried :)?

The 17819 code is the most pressing as I would like to get rid of the MIL...and sell the car but I don't want the buyer coming back and complaining. Quite some time ago I replaced the vac hoses on the RHS of the engine. The LHS vac hoses just collapsed and I reconnected them as best I could. However, I am having trouble finding a diagram that would help and access to those hose connections is pretty difficult. I am thinking this is where the 17819 code originates...but would appreciate any help.

Hi Uwe,
It has done about 226,000 km. At this point I just want to get the MIL issue fixed and sell the car, so would prefer not replacing timing chains...unless it is likely to die in the next month.
Interesting it is a 2005 model as was registered new as 2004 :).

2005 models got manufactured from mid-2004, so any vehicle manufactured after then will be a 2005 model and could be registered in 2004 or 2005.

This is why it's often said on here that year of registration isn't important, it's the model year that matters - which can be determined from the VIN.

As I am about to sell the Touareg I do not want to go to the extent of replacing timing chains...which is likely to cost half of what it is worth.

The 17819 code I am assuming is related to a tubing leak/missing fitting etc. on the LHS. The pump seems to run OK...although is there a test I can run under VCDS?
So...if anyone has a diagram of those hoses etc. on the LHS I would appreciate that, or any otther suggestions to get rid of the MIL 17819 related issue?

Oh, they can trigger the MIL. But the criteria for triggering the MIL is generally something like: The fault was detected during two sequential driving cycles. These codes are all flagged "Intermittent" which means the fault condition that set them did not exist (or could not be detected) at the time the scan was performed (and in the case of an ECU, most likely during the most recent driving cycle).

How quickly do they come back if you clear them?

Hi Uwe,
It takes a couple of days of driving (20km/day) but have just fixed a bunch of problems...ABS motor, brake vac hoses, air suspension running fault, so had plenty of codes/lights going! I have just fixed all those. From memory the 17819 is one of those "sequential cycle" codes.
BTW I have run the Readiness engine test when warm and all passed except oxygen sensor, secondary air pump, cat converter. The 077 test when first run showed 800 rpm 5.85 g/s -46.1%. When I ran it again it was 720 rpm 4.19 g/s 0%.

Mmm I guess if all those codes come back at the same time there no way to tell which one causes the MIL, ie even if I fix the sec. air pump problem the MIL could still be there?

Any engine or emissions fault that happens more than once will set the MIL.

And these faults aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. All 3 have to do with the timing relationship between the crankshaft and camshafts, which given the miles on this vehicle is not far out of line for a VR6 that needs new chains/guides/tensioners.

If you can search through measured values and find the one that has the camshaft "synch angle" or "phase position," that will be very telling.

Most KWP ECUs that will be around measuring value block 093... Any value further negative than -5.00 degrees as the camshaft "starting" point almost certainly has a chain stretch, broken guide, bad tensioner or even has outright jumped time at this point and will need to have the chain system addressed.

Have you considered a fresh oil change and maybe slightly heavier oil being non synthetic to help fill the gaping void?

I see you have the latest version of the opaque?

Hi do you suggest 10w40? I am not sure about an engine flush as well? By "Opaque" are you referring to VCDS version?

Yep I am sure you are right, but if the other codes will also trigger a MIL (as other people are saying) then I will have to deal with them also...and it starts getting expensive/difficult. I am not meaning to be argumentative...I just want to solve this .

Did you consider changing the chains and stop complaining & so you dont screw the next guy or sell it as is and tell them?

FYI The 208 measuring block is -10 and 209 is -9.

Best to not do basic settings with such codes huh, you can "xylophone the valves" in the engine?
I see you didn't yet see what happens when you do maybe?

Thanks yep looks like it will need timing chains. I also first need to sort the secondary air pump P1755. Because it is Bank 2 what parts/leaks should I be looking at?

Firstly, a big thank you to Uwe, Jack and others that have helped with this.
I now have the erwin diagram from VW for the Secondary Air System and have been able to redo the vac hoses (correctly!) now...so I am happy about that. The VCDS trigger for the pump and valves all seems to check out OK.
Am I right in thinking that because I don't have a code for "insufficient flow Bank 1" that the combi valve is working? I have a handheld vac tester on order so I can test the valve if it is holding vac, but are there any tests in VCDS that will show that the system as a whole is now working and/or there is sufficient flow from the pump? I don't seem to be able to get a pass in the Readiness Test for SAI...but I am not confident that I am doing it correctly. It will take some time before I get any codes to occur, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
