If I plug the RNS310, turn ignition off / on (same for the other scans below) then I see these differences. I don't understand how the car knows modules 37 and 56 are there (as in appear in the "Scan" line) if it is dead to all communication. No-one commented on this above. I also don't know if the line "Infotainment Databus in Single Wire Operation" is important. Is the RNS310 on that bus?
This is likely to be a major contributor to the problem, yes the RNS310 is on the Infotainment bus (the clue is in the name) and if it's in single wire mode then it's entirely possible for the CAN Gateway to detect that the RNS310 is there but also for the RNS310 to not decode the messages and hence not communicate.

Thanks, I like it when symptoms are understandable rather than random :). I think I may be further ahead in understanding what is going on after I test some of the CAN wiring on that bus. Aux heater is a likely culprit at the moment i think, but let's wait and see.

Yes, I expected that, but the aux heater is there too. While previously sorting out a broken 12V supply wire on it was engaging I'm not sure I'd call it entertainment :o.

The aux heater could, IMHO, just as well have been designed to be fitted on the Comfort CAN - but I don't have German logic :D

I found time to unplug the aux heater but it made no difference, so presumably is not the cause of any errors on the CAN bus. I also put the old RCD300 back in, and it communicates just fine.

Looking like it is specific to the RNS310, but will see if the later CAN gateway makes a difference when it arrives. Will also do a bit of resistance and continuity test on the bus as well.

I thought I'd try the RNS310 in our other VW. It's a 2008 model year with red dot display, CAN gateway below the version mentioned in the R-T notes page, etc so I didn't think it would work any better - but it did! Instant communication and the trimmed scan looks like this:

The radio coding was OK generally. All I changed was the single / double FM antenna setting and something to do with AUX that I'm not sure I needed to :).

While the radio was unplugged from the car giving trouble I took the CAN gateway out and tested the continuity of the infotainment bus wires. Radio loom to gateway to OBD port gives good continuity on each wire, and high resistance between them. I didn't test their isolation from 12V and ground though, or turn ignition on ACC. Might do that some other time...

At the moment I'm assuming it is some CAN bus incompatibility in the car. Maybe the ...AD suffix version I have coming will address that - maybe not.

More idle twitterings in case I do that thing where once it is working I never return...

The gateway module in the car that talks happily to the RNS310 is HW07 / SW0052. When I find modules on eBay with that versioning they are Siemens VDO, as is the ...AD that is due to arrive. The two I've tried so far are Temic so if the ...AD does work then it could be some manufacturer difference (chips, in-house software bug, etc).

All sorted. Latest eBay purchase CAN gateway module 1K0 907 530 AD dated 2009 fitted and coded, and comms to RNS310 is now fine. The aux heater is still unplugged, so I get errors from that but nothing else.

So in a limited sample of 4 CAN controllers: two Temic ones would not communicate with the RNS 310...
- 1K0 907 530 C HW:08 SW:0080 (late-2003?)
- 1K0 907 530 Q HW:16 SW:0202 (11/Jun/2008)

... and two Siemens VDO ones did.
- 1K0 907 530 L HW:07 SW:0052 (late-2008?)
- 1K0 907 530 AD HW:07 SW:0111 (14/Nov/2009)

Trimmed scan to show what changed...
