My first post.

I have a 1996 Golf VR6 euro spec so with the separate immobiliser and transponder keys. The key barrel in the ignition lock has failed and it isn’t possible to order a new lock to the original key code from VAG (as they are obsolete) nor can the barrels be dismantled without irreversible damage. I was lucky enough to purchase a NOS VAG lock with two keys both of which are fitted with the transponder chips. The only problem is that the immobiliser won’t recognise the chips (Immobiliser module/measuring blocks-08/Group 001/third field) and returns a ’0’ rather than a ‘1’. It recognises the old keys. Assume you don’t need to enter the SKC to recognise the new keys as this isn’t how it is explained in the key matching ‘how to’ at http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Immobilizer_I_Key_Matching_(Separate). Are there differing styles of transponder keys. The old and the new are both stamped AH and WFO and look identical.

I appreciate that I could carefully remove the old transponders and swap them into the new keys but would rather prefer to work out what the issue is. Then on to the door, boot and glove compartment locks...

Any ideas are appreciated.

Forgot to say I have the SKC from the original key labelling.

Please can an administrator move this post to the General VW/Audi Repair section. Apologies for my error.

If you'll post an Auto-Scan, I'm fine with moving it to the real Car Repair Support section.

I'm not that familiar with these old, separate immobilizer systems, but I wouldn't think you should need a PIN code to check whether the Immo "sees" the keys.

Why don't you swop the old transponders to the new keys?

And thanks HMC but swapping the transponders is accepting defeat so I would like understand why the immobiliser can’t ‘see’ the keys before I go down that route.

What do you seen in the Immo itself, MVB 001. Field 3 should show you something about the status of the key.

Immobiliser module/measuring blocks-08/Group 001/third field is ‘0’ for the new keys but ‘1‘ for the old keys. Needs to show ‘1’ to indicate the Immo is recognising the transponder. The only thing I can think is that there are differing types of transponder although the keys are both from the same period of production.

Sounds like it. I believe there are highly specialized locksmith tools that can identify and test transponders, but I'm not sure...

Thanks Uwe. I'll pop down to my automotive locksmith and see if they can read the transponders. Otherwise it will be a transponder swap with regretted defeat...
