Haldex Surge - What items should I log to track down issue?

Hello, I've been experiencing an issue, and I'm not sure I can nail it down to the Haldex yet. Whatever is the issue, it is causing the Haldex to act up.

Whenever my car is started from being shutoff for three minutes or more, I experience a chattering vibration for a a second or two when I hit speeds above 40mph. The vibration is amplified if I pull onto the highway within 1/8th mile of start up. The vibration is short, maybe 1-2 seconds. When the car vibrates, it usually pulls to the right. If the roads are wet, the car becomes quite loose. The issue is most apparent on the highway. It consistantly has the issue four times over the course of two miles, then goes away until the next start up.

I purchased a VCDS Tool from Ross-Tech to log the issue. For now I am logging HALDEX CLUTCH STATUS-DEGREE OF BLOCKAGE, HALDEX CLUTCH PUMP CURRENT, HALDEX CLUTCH PUMP PWM SIGNAL and HALDEX CLUTCH PUMP VOLTAGE. I will attach a graph below.



There may be other things I should be logging. If anyone has suggestions on what to log, please feel free to express your ideas.

NOTE: The Haldex fluid has been changed and screen inspected. The fluid looked normal. The screen was clean. The oil in the differential was also changed. Everything looks normal.

1. You do have identical tires front and rear?
2. The "spikes" look like Haldex self calibration.
3. You could disengage Haldex by removing controller's fuse.
4. I'd record the following
Front left wheel speedFront right wheel speedLeft rear wheel speedRight rear wheel speedHaldex clutch status-Degree of blockageAxle speed deltas
5. I'd bump up sampling rate by using "Group UDS requests".
6. Posting Auto-Scan would help to understand what kind of vehicle you have concerns of.

Thank you for your response! We had a multi-day car rally last weekend. Got back home yesterday.

1. Stock - 255/30R19 Front and 235/35R19 Rear
2. Any idea what would cause this?
3. When AWD fuse is pulled, issue goes away.
4. I've done this, no spikes in wheels speeds or axle speed deltas.
5. I can try that.
6. Have Auto-Scan, will post.

This ghost has been difficult to nail down. The local Audi dealership had the car for a week with no joy. I pulled the AWD fuse as a test prior to purchasing my Ross-Tech VCDS cable. The issue goes away when the fuse is pulled. I recorded the items you noted. There were no spikes in wheels speed or axle speed deltas, so I turned them off to review the graph more easily. I'm new to VCDS, so I'll have to see if I can figure out how to bump sampling rate.

I like your review as "Haldex Self Calibration". It would be nice if I could get more information on how to track this down as the possible issue. IE: Would switching out the Haldex control module with one from another car help isolate the issue? The Haldex pump was inexpensive, relative to other items, so I ordered a new one. Still waiting to receive that.

VWT6 - Impressive research. Thank you for sharing your experience here.

I’m concerned about potential damage and wear the my “issue” is causing to the Haldex clutch assembly and other driveline components in my car. I can’t imagine what it will be like driving the car when it snows.

I ordered a new pump, which arrived a few days ago. I am planning to replace it myself. With your comment above, I’m interested to find out if the dealer has a procedure for calibrating the system when the pump is replaced.

Can you pls clarify the last sentence? Ia the venting/calibration a separate shop step following pump change (or other chnages?) or is the car driven to self calibrate and then the basic settings are done?

AFAIK the car does self calibration while driving. When the pump was replaced on my car it was just it - no ODIS session. No mention about need of basic settings in workshop manual either (Erwin: Workshop Manual, Transporter 2016 ➤, Propshaft and rear final drive, Edition 01.2019).

Below is a clip of my own VCDS session immediately after replacement of full Haldex system. Doing steady 50km/h (in suburbs) at time stamp 547.17 seconds the pump builds up the pressure to the maximum for almost two seconds. That seemed to be it. I did drive&record for 30 minutes more.

This is what it seems to do - every now and then four short "pulses" about 10.3 seconds apart (as in @MnHotRod 's post above). The pulse "amplitude" seems to be related to vehicle speed - higher speed = less blockage (from other measuments).

To capture these short pulses need to bump up sampling rate (was approx 6 sample sets/second).

Thanks for your reply. Below is a modified log in which I wnated to see how the AWD responded on twisty roads and under intentional sudden power application. My results seem a bit different to yours. AWD behaves well funcionally.
Some notes:
Max PWM demand/Current:43%/6.3A on Launch Dontrol
Typ PWM value: 15%
Max wheel rot. delta 8km/hr. Frront wheels significantly less than rears
Max axles delata: 0.8%; typical 0-0.2%
Motor amps agree with PWM
Haldex Temp : 48-50C on 28C day.
It looks like your test was on straight roads and moderate loads or maybe your AWD is not working.:)
