VCDS on Win10 in VirtualBox strange result

I know this configuration isn't supported, but someone has to have tried this and I'm wondering if anyone might know what's going on here.

I have a laptop that's dual boot Win10/Ubuntu. I installed Oracle VirtualBox on Ubuntu, installed Windows 10 in a guest, and then installed VCDS in the Windows 10 guest. I had success in getting VCDS to see the cable, and then I went out to try an auto-scan. I did an autoscan both with VCDS installed in a VirtualBox guest, and also with VCDS running on Windows 10 on bare metal, and got different results. Specifically, if run inside VirtualBox, VCDS will not scan the airbag controller.

The car is an '01 New Beetle with a 2.0 gas engine.

Only thing I can figure is, I do have one of the "bad" airbag controller part numbers that presented problems with earlier versions of VCDS, and the software or the driver is blocking it for that reason. Any clues?

Speculation: Some old KW1281 K-Line modules were extremely fussy about timing, and having to pass everything through an additional OS plus a VM hypervisor is not at all helpful with that.

This may or may not help, but I run windows 7 on a macbook via virtualbox and I don't have any issues with VCDS.

The only thing I have to watch out for is if either the laptop and/or win7 go into 'sleep' mode, it screws everything up and I have to reset the virtual machine.
