Hi, I'm Jon and I have a problem with a Crafter I could do with help with.
MIL came on with code P261A, aux coolant pump open circuit. I did some basic checks which seemed ok and then replaced the pump. Unfortunately the fault code persists and I am having trouble sorting it out. I have now checked the relay, relay supplies, pump supply and earth and continuity to everything except the ECU. I ran the VCDS output test to run the pump and it all works perfectly. I suspect there may be nothing wrong but the ECU is unhappy with the new pump (genuine part). My question is....is there anything on VCDS to reset the ECU when a new pump is installed or something similar? I have not found anything yet.
Many thanks,
Jon.

Hi Jon and welcome to the forum. It would help us immensely if you would post a complete autoscan. With that information, people will be able to look up information on your Crafter and suggest help.

Thank you for your welcome.
I have posted the auto scan but the only fault code is the one I mentioned in my first post/

I can't really imagine the ECU being unhappy with the new pump (you said it's genuine) unless the new pump is defective. Double check (including load-testing) all wiring and connections between the ECU and the pump, and any other wiring relevant to the pump.

Have double tested all wires and connections and all seems well.
As the pump works perfectly off VCDS I am wondering if there is something wrong with the monitoring of the pump.
Problem is I can't see how the ECU does that. I would guess that it monitors current draw from which it can work out a resistance, but I can't see anything on the circuit diagrams.
Jon.

Hello Jon,

I'm sorry that I saw this late. I think I may know what is wrong with your vehicle, however could I please ask you the following
What happened before you got the code?
Do you get a light that looks like an orange radiator?
Did you touch any component in the cooling system?

This is a customer's car so do not have a full history.
No radiator symbol has illuminated and no work has been done to the cooling system.
The air intake temperature sensor was replaced not long before the problem started.

There are two pumps on the vehicle, a V51 pump, which is near the firewall, with two wires (brown and grey). Another pump, V400 is amounted next to the radiator and has three wires for the egr cooler. When you do the activation via VCDS, you will activate V400. I believe the code relates to V400, it will activate via the scan tool and later give you a code. The other pump you cannot activate via VCDS.

Thank you very much for this information. There are indeed two pumps and I think that V400 is the faulty one (or associated wiring etc).
However I am 100% sure that VCDS activates pump V50 (or at least mine does!).
Next step to check out V400 and associated parts. I will report back.
Jon.

V400 was the problem. Replaced it and problems all gone.
Many thanks for your help.
Jon.
