AC Problem 2010 Jetta

Hi all,

I am posting this on behalf of a customer. They are fighting to get the AC working on their Jetta. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer:

About 4 weeks ago we charged the AC system and as of yesterday we checked and it was holding the gas (17.5 barg). When we turned on the AC nothing. Run the VCDS and checked the error coding it came up with a code 3. HP pressure sender reading low pressure? The error codes for the compressor cleared as we now have a brand new compressor and it is connected. Took the connector off the HP sender and simulated the 12v pulsed signal down the signal line to try and clear the lock out 3 code, the fans on the radiator bank kicked up and the expansion valve opened, but alas no compressor current.

Hello Grant,

Thanks for the post! The VIN makes this vehicle look like a 2008 'Campanella White' VW Jetta :) [If I had to guess the production date is "03/2008" ??]

Question, how and when did you determine the system's charge pressure? I ask, because 17.5 bar, at rest is way to high!
If the HVAC was in operation then the value could be plausible.
Depending on ambient temperature the static pressure should read as indicated below:

G65 Pressure vs. Temperature chart
(When key is on, engine is off, static system pressure)


15C - 59F - 4.0 bar
20C - 68F - 5.0 bar
25C - 77F - 6.0 bar
30C - 86F - 7.0 bar
35C - 95F - 8.0 bar
40C - 104F - 9.0 bar

The G65-High Pressure Sensor for this HVAC system uses a 12V power source on Pin3 and a ground on Pin1. If you were to check the potential between Pins 1 & 3, you should be able to light up a 20-watt light bulb with minimal voltage loss.

Any voltage drop will affect the voltage to the J255-HVAC Controller via Pin2 of the G65.

Have you tried a new G65-High Pressure Sensor? These part numbers have been superseded several times from a [1K0 959 126 A] to [1K0 959 126 D] to [1K0 959 126 E] and then finally to the [5K0 959 126]. !Check with the local parts department for the correct part number by VIN!

I should have mentioned the correct car details :facepalm: It is a 2008 VW Jetta.

I did query the pressure reading as I thought it was high. My customer has compared this pressure reading against another 2009 Jetta and a Polo (both with working AC) and the readings are all similar....

Good idea on trying a new G65 sensor.
Do you need to run a basic setting on the AC after regassing and changing the sensor to get the compressor to start working?

It maybe a good idea to properly evacuate the HVAC system and charge it by weight, not pressure so as to insure the proper operation of the system.

So if they replace the G65, they would not have to worry about any Basic Settings or Adaptations.
There only one Basic Settings for this HVAC controller and that is for the "Potentiometer & Flap Alignment", (used when any vent flaps/motors are replaced/re-worked).

Also, when replacing the G65-High Pressure Sensor, there should be no need to evacuate the refrigerant from the HVAC system. Most, if not all of these systems use a schrader valve on the fitting under the G65 and when the G65 is removed this valve should close off the path of refrigerant. I believe it is a 17mm open end wrench is all that is needed.**

** Still recommend to the customer to observe ALL the safety precautions when working with refrigerant systems!

A reply from my customer below:

"Was getting around to changing the sensor. So seems the logical place to start

We have 12v on pins 1and 3 and when we simulate the signal on 2 everything else fires up fans kick in and the expansion valve opens.

We checked the recirc flap and that is stroking nicely as detected by the VCDS.

The pressure is from the Halfords pressure gauge on the recharge rig green zone is 25 to 40 psi or 1.7 barg to 2.72 barg I was reading the Kpa scale and got a 0 in the wrong place when converting (I hate SI units) so the LP side is charged with 525 grams of refrigerant which is what is stated on the bonnet sticker and the pressure on the LP side is 30 psi just over 2 barg in the green zone of the gauge.

So looks like a G65 sensor required."
