Hi, sorry for delay life got in the way as it often does. Here is full auto scan. I read about fuel trims, but I can't find them in advanced measuring values under 'fuel','obd','oxygen','lambda'. Are they in the engine module? What are they called?

Since you had not posted an Auto-Scan when you originally asked this question, I did not realize you had a diesel engine. The concept of "fuel trim" doesn't apply to diesels.

Gasoline engines control power by controlling airflow using a throttle and then the engine management provides an appropriate amount of fuel, which is "trimmed" based on feedback from various sensors, primarily the oxygen sensor(s) in the exhaust.

Diesel engines do not control power by restricting airflow using a throttle. The control power by controlling the amount of fuel injected. Traditionally, they had completely unrestricted airflow, but this resulted in lots of excess air under part-load conditions and thus high NOx emissions. So what they do now is to substitute oxygen-depleted exhaust gasses for air to try to minimize those NOx emissions, but they still don't trim fuel; instead they effectively trim air.

However, diesels have various other "learned values" that are cleared/reset when you clear fault codes.

Hi, is it worth me going out for a run and measuring values at this point? Car is now down on power even after reset. No fault codes present. I’ve read, and I’ve looked at the various values that can be measured. Without a fault code it’s obviously difficult to pin down. I can measure air flow to hopefully rule out the MAF but before I do the redline in 3rd are there are other values I can measure at the same time?

edit: or recommendation for values I can log on good and bad days to give me an indication of where a fault may lie. Can I measure torque/bhp on vcds?

Does the ECU calculate torque for gas engine (Chassis Type: FF-AU37 (5Q0)? I don't see it from a quick view of Blockmap01 and I'm too lazy to go to the cold garage to use the interface. So Q is (only very easy) should I persist looking?
My interest is with regards to providing another indirect data point on general engine performance and entropy growth:)

That's not a citation of the actual law or regulation. I'd like to read the exact working, 'cause if it exists at all, I'm confident it applies to workshops, not to individuals working on their own cars, and I'd like to know under what conditions it applies to workshops.

But we digress. The OP asked why his engine runs differently after he clears faults, and the answer is: Clearing faults resets the fuel trims.

(14) Generic and enhanced information for scan tools. By July 1, 2013, manufacturers shall make available to equipment and tool companies all generic and enhanced service information including bi-directional control and data stream information as defined in paragraph (j)(3(ii) of this section. This requirement applies for 2013 and later model year engines.

(i) The information required by this paragraph (j)(14) shall be provided electronically using common document formats to equipment and tool companies with whom they have appropriate licensing, contractual, and/or confidentiality arrangements. To the extent that a central repository for this information (e.g. the TEK-NET library developed by the Equipment and Tool Institute) is used to warehouse this information, the Administrator shall have free unrestricted access. In addition, information required by this paragraph (j)(14) shall be made available to equipment and tool companies who are not otherwise members of any central repository and shall have access if the non-members have arranged for the appropriate licensing, contractual and/or confidentiality arrangements with the manufacturer and/or a central repository.

(ii) In addition to the generic and enhanced information defined in paragraph (j)(3)(ii) of this section, manufacturers shall also make available the following information necessary for developing generic diagnostic scan tools:

(A) The physical hardware requirements for data communication (e.g., system voltage requirements, cable terminals/pins, connections such as RS232 or USB, wires, etc.),

(B) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) data communication (e.g., serial data protocols, transmission speed or baud rate, bit timing requirements, etc.),

(C) Information on the application physical interface (API) or layers. (i.e., processing algorithms or software design descriptions for procedures such as connection, initialization, and termination),

(D) Engine application information or any other related service information such as special pins and voltages or additional connectors that require enablement and specifications for the enablement.

(iii) Any manufacturer who utilizes an automated process in their manufacturer-specific scan tool for diagnostic fault trees shall make available to equipment and tool companies the data schema, detail specifications, including category types/codes and codes, and data format/content structure of the diagnostic trouble trees.

(iv) Manufacturers can satisfy the requirement of paragraph (j)(14)(iii) of this section by making available diagnostic trouble trees on their manufacturer Web sites in full-text.

(v) Manufacturers shall make all required information available to the requesting equipment and tool company within 14 days after the request to purchase has been made unless the manufacturer requests Administrator approval to refuse to disclose such information to the requesting company or requests Administrator approval for additional time to comply. After receipt of a request and consultation with the affected parties, the Administrator shall either grant or refuse the petition based on the evidence submitted during the consultation process:

(A) If the evidence demonstrates that the engine manufacturer has a reasonably based belief that the requesting equipment and tool company could not produce safe and functionally accurate tools that would not cause damage to the engine, the petition for non-disclosure will be granted. Engine manufacturers are not required to provide data stream and bi-directional control information that would permit an equipment and tool company's products to modify an EPA-certified engine or transmission configuration.

(B) If the evidence does not demonstrate that the engine manufacturer has a reasonably-based belief that the requesting equipment and tool company could not produce safe and functionally accurate tools that would not cause damage to the engine, the petition for non-disclosure will be denied and the engine manufacturer, as applicable, shall make the requested information available to the requesting equipment and tool company within 2 days of the denial.

(vi) If the manufacturer submits a request for Administrator approval for additional time, and satisfactorily demonstrates to the Administrator that the engine manufacturer is able to comply but requires additional time within which to do so, the Administrator shall grant the request and provide additional time to fully and expeditiously comply.

(vii) Manufacturers may require that tools using information covered under paragraph (j)(14) of this section comply with the Component Identifier message specified in SAE J1939-71 (as specified in paragraph (j)(17) of this section) as Parameter Group Number (PGN) 65249 (including the message parameter's make, model, and serial number) and the SAE J1939-81 (as specified in paragraph (j)(17) of this section) Address Claim PGN.

(viii) Manufacturers are not required to make available to equipment and tool companies any information related to reconfiguration capabilities or any other information that would make permanent changes to existing engine configurations.

Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes
1. What are Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes?
Permanent Diagnostic Trouble Codes (PDTCs) are very similar to regular Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). However, unlike regular DTCs, they cannot be reset by disconnecting the vehicle’s battery or cleared using an On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) scan tool. The only way to clear a PDTC is to fix the underlying problem with the vehicle that originally caused the PDTC and its corresponding DTC to set, and then allow the vehicle sufficient drive time to re-run the monitor that identified the problem in the first place. When the monitor runs without identifying a problem, the PDTC will clear itself.

2. What regulations are applicable to PDTCs?
Including PDTCs in the Smog Check Program will implement another OBD inspection development in accordance with California Code of Regulations, title 16, section 3340.42.2(c)(5).

3. What outreach has been done to obtain stakeholder input?
The Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) has been conducting outreach on the use of PDTCs with the industry and vehicle manufacturers, including two BAR Advisory Group presentations, a separate workshop, two BAR newsletter articles, and ET Blasts. The workshop notice, presentation , and webcast are available for more information.

4. When will PDTCs be included as part of the Smog Check inspection failure criteria?
Starting July 1, 2019, the presence of PDTCs will be considered in determining the vehicle’s Smog Check inspection result.

5. Why are PDTCs being included in the Smog Check Program?
Unplugging the vehicle’s battery or using a scan tool are techniques sometimes used to clear OBD information for a vehicle that has an illuminated malfunction indicator light in an attempt to hide the fact that the vehicle is malfunctioning. Some of these vehicles can pass a Smog Check inspection before the vehicle can re-identify the underlying problem that set the malfunction indicator light and DTC(s). This can have a dramatic impact on air quality and decrease the effectiveness of the Smog Check Program. Although the use of readiness monitors reduces the chances of passing a Smog Check inspection with an active DTC, PDTCs can further ensure emission control systems are working correctly.

6. How are PDTCs going to be used as part of a Smog Check inspection?
Upon implementation, vehicles that have a PDTC stored in the OBD system will fail the Smog Check inspection regardless of whether the malfunction indicator light is illuminated. If a PDTC is stored, it indicates that the OBD system has not yet successfully verified that a previously detected emissions-related malfunction is no longer active.

7. Which model-year vehicles will include PDTCs as part of the Smog Check inspection?
The new criteria will apply to model-year 2010 and newer vehicles that support PDTCs.

8. What if the vehicle does not properly support PDTC functionality?
BAR is working with the Air Resources Board (ARB) to ensure that known problematic vehicles are addressed by the vehicle manufacturers. In the meantime, BAR will control application of such vehicles through the Smog Check database, and list them in the On-Board Diagnostic Test Reference. Vehicles that do not support PDTC storage will not be subject to this part of the Smog Check inspection.

9. What is the estimated increase in Smog Check inspection failure rate for the inclusion of PDTCs?
BAR analysis indicates the new requirement could initially increase Smog Check inspection failure rates by less than half a percent (0.2 to 0.3%).

10. Are there circumstances under which a PDTC will not cause a vehicle to fail a Smog Check inspection?
Yes. PDTCs will be ignored if the vehicle has completed at least 15 warm-up cycles and been driven at least 200 miles since its OBD information was last cleared.

11. What is a warm-up cycle?
A warm-up cycle means driving a vehicle so that the engine coolant temperature rises by at least 40 degrees Fahrenheit after the engine is started and reaches at least 160 degrees Fahrenheit.

12. Why will PDTCs be ignored when the vehicle has completed 15 warm-up cycles and been driven 200 miles since the codes were cleared?
The time to complete 15 warm-up cycles and drive 200 miles is reasonable for vehicles to complete the self-diagnostic tests. In fact, most vehicles will complete the self-diagnostic tests well before this maximum limit is reached. The 15/200 limit is being established to prevent undue inconvenience to motorists who are trying to comply with the Smog Check Program requirements but are having trouble getting specific monitors to run to completion and ready for testing.

13. Is there financial help available to consumers whose vehicles fail Smog Check for a PDTC?
The Consumer Assistance Program (CAP) offers both repair assistance and vehicle retirement options to eligible consumers. Income-eligible consumers may receive financial assistance with emissions-related repairs if their vehicle fails a biennial Smog Check inspection. Consumers who meet eligibility requirements may receive up to $1,500 to retire their vehicle.

14. Is there any PDTC training available?
Yes. BAR’s PDTC training video provides additional information for Smog Check Inspectors and Repair Technicians.

Yes it's there, thanks. Put me in the hall of shame. I have MAF logs at max load demand and will compare. Guessing torque is based on MAF.

Did you know that isn't always the case though & why sometimes several resets or manual clear of adaption or even rebooted ECU is required?

Granted the OP is in the UK, however, this what I see here, so I have to question the intent of madness!

Did you know resetting the fault memory is not a qualified repair and why auto-parts stores or service centers were fined heavy across Country when people did it to keep a car driving when it did not comport, same for NYS inspection before a DCY achieved for readiness?

Did you know here it is illegal to just hook up and clear codes if a consumer asks this?
I can only speak for Ireland but that IS NOT the case here. I get asked to do this regularly. On BMW some EGR codes do not recur for up to 500 miles.
However it is not to pass our MOT (called NCT here) - see below

This is why Readiness is also checked during an I/M test in the US (in those places where such testing is required). If you clear engine faults, Readiness bits should read "Failed or Incomplete" until the ECU has had a chance to run the relevant tests.

In Ireland the NCT (National Car Test) checks tailpipe emissions ONLY. It is a very simple test and totally unlike CARB etc. Smoke Opacity for Diesel and CO/HC/Lambda for petrol.
Currently they have NO emission test for PHEVs.
If Engine Management light is on - it is NOT a failure either provided the gasses pass...
Even though I was told in a training course in 2001 (shush, I'm getting older) that NCT would check readiness/completed via EOBD (EU version of OBDII) it has never happened.
The only dash lights that can cause failure are MRS/SRS or ABS/DSC/Traction.
I've seen cases where a traction control light did not fail a car (because the tester apparently did not know what he was doing).
Also, I've had a tester fail due to MRS light flashing on an Audi (due to disabling a bag for child seat) and it had to be explained that the 6 flashes was to inform the driver and was not a fault in the system :rolleyes:

The rumour mill has it that engine management light & readiness tests will be checked here 'sometime before 2022'. I won't hold my breath.

Thanks. I took it out for a run and floored in third a couple of times, it peaked at 443nm@3600rpm both times. Car is a 2.0 184 with factory torque of 380nm. Is drag taken into account? 443 is high. It didn't feel like 443, or even 360 (torque minus drag).

Assuming my butt dyno is not broken, does this figure tell me the sensors are all working correctly and car thinks it is putting out good torque, and my problem is mechanical (ie. blocked air filter or cat?)

It revs to redline but it doesn't feel very keen, almost like someones put a couple of thick socks over the intake. You recall I mention it runs like a dream after a fault code reset? That doesn't work any more.

I admit I'm groping in the dark at the moment. I added more values with the torque test, I figured may as well get 12 values recorded while I was doing the log anyway.

I can go away and log values on the fuel/injector side, charge pressure, egr perhaps. As I say, nothing in the car is pointing me towards a certain area at the moment.

What is the preferred way to share a log? I did a fresh autoscan pasted below.

Disclaimer: I have a DTUK box connected. It is set to disabled at present, but appreciate the signals are still passing through the box.

I had to pop out again and car was behaving itself, so i did another log but found identical figures across torque, rev range, air mass, camshaft. I've noted when it's behaving itself you don't have to depress the throttle as much to get up the road. Note to self - log throttle position.

What's with the specified air mass value being fixed, I thought it would be dependant on revs,boost requirements.

I'm happy to monitor and do more logging both when it's good and bad - what values should I monitor as a start?

On a side note I sometimes get long cranking on first start of day. I saw on a Diagnosedan youtube video -
- it could be VVT solenoid. I don't know if this would effect performance. It cranks well. Anyway I pulled the battery history and see it is 4 years old. Battery voltage at the terminals after 2hr cool down is 12.44. Admit I do more short journeys than long journeys. Between 3 and 10 miles.
