I have been having an issue with my 2016 Audi S3 (UK), it has been with Audi for ten weeks and after replacing most things in the engine including the Dual Mass Flywheel the issue remains.

The below graph shows what it feels like, 5th Gear. Manual mode smooth road constant throttle but revs go up in bursts.

One very strange thing is that after doing a Launch Control start the problem seems to go away for a couple of days.

When looking for things to log I found these values in the DSG gearbox section

IDE06241-ENG120892 Uneven road surface recognition: total driving portion-Driving part_of_rough road_detection_total 116.1 %
IDE06243-ENG120894 Longest active distance with uneven road surface recognition-Longest_active_mileage_of_rough_road_detection 56684 km
IDE13947-ENG36805 Mileage since last activation: uneven road surface recognition-Kilometer_at_last_ activation_rough_road_detection 0 km

I was just wondering does anyone have a scan off a similar gearbox or does this mean nothing, I have always thought the traction control on this car was a bit sensitive.
Does this mean the car always thinks it is on a rough road and what sensor detects that?

Auto scan below if needed

Mikemod.

I have a 2012 TDI beetle which does something similar, also no codes with a DSG.

I am not too worried about it as feels like a miss fire but happens mostly at slow speeds in 6th. I normally paddle shift it up one gear and most of the problem goes away. Acts like an old style gear box hunting when turning TC off and on.

Sounds like Audi already hit it with a parts cannon, hope it was on their dime.

Not familiar with vags viewing ability but would be inclined to look at pids from the DSG during this.

Also would be curious to monitor wheel speed sensors, again if possible with vag, again a question for higher pay grade, and there are many here.

I went out today and logged the ABS wheel sensors, no problems although I did notice when I went over a bumpy road and the traction control was active all the values went to zero.

So no further on, the dealer has no clues what to do next, I guess cars are just to complicated these days and when you get a fault like this it's a nightmare to trace.

Hi Mikemod,

I can't comment on the rough road detection, but can you provide more information?

When did this problem appear? Has it always been like this since you owned the car?

Has any work been done on the car before this fault appeared that you know of if it has only appeared during your ownership?

Does it happen in all gears?

Is the car and the software standard?

I assume the blue line in your graph is engine rpm logged from 01 Engine. Does the 02 Auto Trans module offer any measuring values like input speed/output speed? If so can you log these with engine rpm (which is usually available in the TCM)?

Also, there are a number of things which can vary engine torque other than throttle position, so it may be worth looking at things like ignition timing, cam timing, boost pressure and even fuel pressure when this is happening.

Good thought, will be interesting.

And of course is there a loose WIRING issue?, but the fact everything went to zero, is indicative of something, what that is not sure. But it not posting a code is troublesome.

As long as it is not stranding you is a plus. MR. M had good advice, what are all the players doing at this time, and would look specific at TPS, for one. And my guess IMO, an independent shop is a better choice for this repair, not a big fan of dealers.

One very strange thing is that after doing a Launch Control start the problem seems to go away for a couple of days.
Fluid low or inadequate spec mechanical tolerance in gearbox?

Have you checked fluid levels, tried a thickening agent or heavier hydraulic oil?

Strange I wonder why they updated trans, however, not engine controller forgetting, WHY, WHY WHY?

The problem has been in the car for about 8 -9 months, I have owned the car from new (2016), I just decided to get it looked at while still in warranty.

Has any work been done on the car before this fault appeared that you know of if it has only appeared during your ownership?

Does it happen in all gears?

It seems to happen in all gears although 5th Gear seems to be worse, Under full throttle accelerations it happens only about twice through the rev range.

The car is standard

Yes, here is another graph of Revs(blue) vs Commanded torque(orange) in the gearbox

Also, there are a number of things which can vary engine torque other than throttle position, so it may be worth looking at things like ignition timing, cam timing, boost pressure and even fuel pressure when this is happening.

I will see if I can go out and log some of that info.

I suspect the commanded torque value in the TCM is calculated by the ECM but it would be worth checking it follows the same trend in the ECM. The only reason for this is that it looks like something is asking for a torque reduction to modulate something. If it is the ECM it could be a number of things including traction control detecting slip, the ECM detecting knock or overboost, or a number of other things. There would usually be a measuring value in the ECM for torque reduction which would be worth looking at.

I agree with Jack too, that it is important to have the software up to date when trying to find faults.

They said there are no updates for my ECM which is why it wasn't updated, Is there a newer version ?

The traction control on my car does seem a bit sensitive. Is it possible to drive the car with the ABS fuse removed?
I assume that is where the traction control requirement is calculated.

The other thing which seems strange is, if I have Cruise Control engaged and I hit a bump in the road it disengages, even at slow speeds eg 30MPH.

It sounds like there is an updated software version for the ECM. I think the standard response from service reception is that there are no updates

I wouldn't advise driving without the ABS fuse, but have you tried turning off traction control? I know it isn't really off when you do this but does it make the car behave differently?

This is pointing more and more at something to do with wheel speeds. Are the tyres evenly and equally worn, and at the correct pressures? I assume the wheels and tyre sizes are standard as you said the car is standard...

Tyres are nearly new, pressures checked and good, Rims Original fitment.

The dealer did actually try another set of wheels as well and I run Winter tyres on different rims but the issue was still there.

I have tried with the TCS in sport mode and completely off but it still exhibits the fault, I also tried all the driving modes, but it still does it.

Intersting, and I don't know JACK, (no offense I hope) about what disengages cruise on this, stuff I'm used too is at brake switch. The fact that bumps disengage it if that is the case would look at the switch and see if it is loose or out of tolerance, or brake arm is moving. Of course this is assuming that is how this one works, maybe not.

That said is cruise some how tied into this problem, just speaking out loud here. Might also log that and see what shows up, just a guess. Might still look at a wiring issue involving ECM or other players. If not showing up in logs, hate to say it, but might want to look at some connectors with a scope, but pretty sure VAG will show something if we log it during the issue.

Curious, what is the status of the knock sensor on this car?, assuming again it has one, think it would. Do we have a rattle playing games with timing and such?

Confused

All I can suggest is to prove whether or not the torque reduction is due to ESP or not and go from there.

The car is back with the dealer and after further road tests and discussions with Audi technical they suspect the DSG clutch packs and are going to replace them next week.

I.e., would think they are slipping, but why just on rough surfaces?

Also, rather than a miss fire, which is what it feels like but should I would think show up in data, but don't know the ability of VAG viewing this, but would think there would be RPM surges in the events.
Also what are the pressure graph to the clutch packs during the events. But maybe this is what the dealer is looking at. Historically I have found they will not communicate any of this with client regardless of how knowledgeable client is.

If they are paying the bill, go for it, If not would be dubious.

I have just got my car back again today with new clutch packs fitted and what a difference, the fault has finally completely gone.
Just crossing my fingers for the next few weeks but it is pulling like a train again with no hiccups.
