Hello All,

I'm looking to do a Halogen to Bi-Xenon retrofit on a '17 NA Golf Sportwagen along with a few other upgrades. I'm curious where I can find information on the BCM's capabilities? Autoscan below:

I've checked some other Autoscans of GSW/Alltracks posted on these forums. I've seen a few with BCM 5Q0 937 087 AN and Bi-xenon headlights so I would assume it is capable, but I'd just like to double check. Normally I'd check Long code to see if Xenon was a present selection, but seeing as this is a newer VW, long coding on Cent. Elect. isn't available - And I don't know enough about the new adaptations to tell if I can check here for capabilities. Also curious if this BCM would support heated seats if I ever decided to retro-fit?

If 5Q0 937 087 AN is unable to handle this, would 5Q0 937 087 AP be able to? Any assistance is appreciated.

I'm aware i'll require other hardware and wiring pieces for the retro-fit, I'll be posting more questions related to that in a separate post dedicated to the retro-fit.

Thanks,
Sean

Hi and welcome.

I'm moving this to the Retrofits section for you, where I think it's a better fit.

^^Sean: Hi. Some very good thought processes evident in your inaugural post suggesting a methodical and considered intellect - respect!! I'm not entirely certain of the DoT road rules up there, but I assume that the HID retrofit will be installed with the requisite leveling sensor(s)

As for your observation that the "long coding on Cent. Elect. isn't available" -while this is strictly correct, it doesn't mean that BCM on your MY17 vehicle is devoid of the same information that was present on those hex09 modules that had a healthy and vibrant long-code string.

In truth, what happened in newer BCMs on later model MQB platform vehicles was that in abandoning long code - there was a wholesale shift of pretty-much the same Byte/Bit options into the adaptation channel database. Here's an example showing the dynamic that occurred - on the older hex09 modules, the long-code software switches that instructed the BCM which lamp type to operate as headlights were like this:

On newer BCMs (like in your car), the exact same switches can be found in the following adaptation channel (notice the similarities in the naming convention): ENG141650-ENG141973-Fernlicht_assistent-Erweiterte_Fernlichtsteuerung.

And, apropos of your second question about the specific capability of various BCM s with different part/SW numbers - I'm aware that some here appear to have access to this information via a web-based facility - but my (low-cost) approach is far simpler; My technique is to find-out via the WD which pin # and socket number on the BCM is allocated to the equipment that I'm about to retrofit - then I remove the socket from the BCM housing and I eyeball whether the pin is physically present.

I'm not sure if it's a 100% certainty in every instance, but my experience thus far has been that VW don't install pins where the device isn't capable of providing the function (incidentally, the reverse is most certainly true in every instance)

Yes, your BCM will support OEM Xenons. I did the retrofit and didn't have to swap mine.

Here's my old auto-scan after the retrofit:

DV52 & Somnus,

Thank you both for the quick replies and information! I didn't want to attempt to pull the BCM before I had to, so thank you for confirming for a lazy bones like me. I was able to find pictures of the BCM pins, but the A pin out was hard to see, so I wasn't sure if A2 was there for heated seats.

Thank you for the offer, I'll be in touch as I do think I'll need these.

DV52:
So checking my adaptations menu, I have the same selection of drop downs as you provided in your example (Basis, Basis FLA, etc):
On newer BCMs (like in your car), the exact same switches can be found in the following adaptation channel (notice the similarities in the naming convention): ENG141650-ENG141973-Fernlicht_assistent-Erweiterte_Fernlichtsteuerung.

All the posts i've read only have Long coding changes for Byte 02 and 06, the rest of the changes are adaptations which should be easy to follow. Byte 02 needs to be 02 Light: Bi-xenon w/o Light assist, and byte 06 needs to be 20 Xenon - Shutter (PR-8IG/8IM/8IP) installed. I assume these are rolled into one of those drop downs under ENG141650-ENG141973-Fernlicht_assistent-Erweiterte_Fernlichtsteuerung? If so do you know which selection I need? I'll admit I'm learning as I go on this retrofit so even common sense items are lost on me hah.

With the BCM answered, I think I have my hardware in a row for this. I should be posting up a new post dedicated to just the retrofit for the lights here for others who may want to retrofit. Looks like the only hardware i'll need to replace is the CAN gateway, along with sourcing the headlights and modules, Rear auto level sensor and AFS control Module along with wiring harness.

Thanks again,
Sean

Sean: Using the very same approach as for Byte 2 in my previous reply, the relevant software switches in Byte 6 on the old BCMs looked like this (incidentally, the "yellow" long coding helper screens are much better for this kind of exercise because the Bit descriptors tend to be more similar to the adaptation channel names):

So, by entering something similar to the words in the picture above into the search box on the VCDS adaptation screen, the equivalent channel for Byte 6, Bits 5-6 is not surprisingly ENG141647-ENG141986-Außenlicht_Front-Abblendlicht_Leuchtentyp. And mercifully, one of the available options for this channel just happens to be GDL - which as you can see in the picture above, would have resulted in a value hex20 in the old BCM.

Looks like the only hardware i'll need to replace is the CAN gateway, along with sourcing the headlights and modules, Rear auto level sensor and AFS control Module along with wiring harness.
Sean: I'm not sure whether you have simply glossed-over the matter of Component Protection (CP), or if you are unaware of this (IMO, dubious) protocol. On MQB platform vehicles, the Gateway module @ address hex19 happens to also be the CP master module. CP means that with every ignition switch-on, the CP master module initiates an automatic check of the identity of other key modules on the CAN network. The Gateway module then validates that the responses are the same as those that passed this test at the previous ignition cycle. When one of these "Key" modules is changed (including the CP master, itself) - a CP error is generated which usually results in a severe restriction to the new module's operation. The only official way of deleting CP errors is to connect to the FAZIT database back on VW's mother-ship. This is normally a dealer service

Don,

Thank you for your assistance so far. So I do have a question on how one would find the Byte names without long code helper? I seem to be a bit lost as to how you translated the Byte to a name to search for adaptation channel wise. When I check my screen I do not see that(as you mentioned with my newer BCM), and when selecting the Adaptation channel my selections have the name without the bits next to them - Thus I end up scratching my head when someone says Byte 2 Hex02/Byte 6 hex20. Here is what I see:

Though I do understand from your examples I'm looking to use adaptations ENG141650-ENG141973-Fernlicht_assistent-Erweiterte_Fernlichtsteuerung > AFS:BCM-Fernlicht & ENG141647-ENG141986-Außenlicht_Front-Abblendlicht_Leuchtentyp > GDL to accomplish this. I just am not sure how you resolved the names, maybe i'm just a bit slow catching on. :D

I'm aware of CP and ODIS coding required for certain hardware. I've attempted to do my homework on this retrofit and learn from those that have completed it before me. I'll be speaking with a few dealers here, but if I don't get the warm and fuzzy from them I may attempt to source my own VAS5054A cable. I've heard that mechanics can assist with CP removal and ODIS coding remotely with their proper login credentials, so this may be the route I go.

On the note of CP - Do you know if Door controllers also fall under the CP/ODIS coding umbrella? I'm looking to retrofit auto-folding mirrors, with reverse mirror dip, heated. I've read I may need to replace door controller for this, if that is the case I should knock that out with the CAN gateway. More research is needed on my part, but it would make a case to push that retrofit up the mods list.

Snapped a few pics of the A Pins on the BCM just to ensure it would support Front Fog as that's also a retrofit I plan on doing with the Xenon. Looks like it will support it. Just need to decide on headlights.

Thanks,
Sean

Sean: hmm...... you want to know ALL the secrets!!;). It's nothing special really- to resolve the names, I either use Mr Google's picture facility (with a suitable search criteria), or I use my own MQB database!!

No - the door control modules are not in the CP "constellation" - so they should be OK to change with just VCDS, This said, some here have had to resort to the dealer device when replacing these modules - read here. The low-risk approach is to try to source replacement modules from 2nd hand cars of a similar make/model rather than buying brand new modules - that way you can be assured that they come complete with the correct parameterization.

I've no experience with remote coding to delete CP errors -so I can't comment. But I suggest that you arrange/agree whatever method you will use before starting the CAN Gateway swap - and make sure that you make an admap file of the old module so that you have a complete database of the original settings.

Not sure why the fogs lights and the Gateway module are related in your work program, but this might help with this phase of the project:

....and don't forget, you will need to buy a new LDS and if your car doesn't have rear fogs, you will probably need to run a new wire from the LDS to the BCM

Your door control modules are max, so don't need to be replaced in order to fit folding mirrors:

Awesome. Thank you for the information! Makes things a bit easier if I just need to source the mirrors and switch.

Don,

Thanks again for your wealth of knowledge.

How does one gain access, or perhaps a copy?

Will do. Is there anything besides an admap I should grab before swapping anything?

I figure if i'm going to be re-pinning or swapping the harness as needed to the BCM for Shutters/headlights, I might as well take care of anything that might be needed while i'm down (upside down?) there. :D
So B5(right light), B45(left light), and A29 (trigger wire from switch) would need to be done to retro-fit the fogs and i'd rather not have to climb under my dashboard more than needed. I've already upgraded my LDS, went with an "auto" light kit with light sensor and Euro switch with front/rear fog. Plan on retrofitting the Euro LED Sportwagen lights to make use of the rear fog on the switch. Shame the Wagon variant doesn't have dynamic blinker, though maybe one of those funny relay kits will work? - A can of worms for when I have the LED in front of me I suppose.

Thank you again for all your assistance,
Sean

The good news with your car is that your CAN gateway (3Q0 907 530 B) supercedes into the High version (3Q0 907 530 C), so technically, ODIS could officially do the swap as well as remove CP if you get a new Gateway

Yeah, I was hoping it would be easier to have a dealer do the work with it being a direct replacement. After all, if someone with a B model came in with a CAN failure, they'd have to swap it for a C. I've read a quite a few horror stories of dealers not knowing how to fully use ODIS and being charged hours of labor only to have to find assistance elsewhere. Granted this was for Hardware swaps that were not coded for their VIN but would work with their model. The guide i'm following had issues with going from a 5Q0907530S to 5Q0907530AM as it wasn't for his VIN. Fingers crossed I don't run into any major roadblocks.

If a dealer was to code it for my VIN via ODIS, would I need to have the additional codes for Xenon's added, or is that something I can code for via VCDS? Just curious what would be needed to activate pins 7 and 17 on the gateway for the retrofit.

Thanks again for the info!

they all do. if a dealer were to replace a LOW/MID gateway, ETKA directly suggests the HIGH variant.

nothing is needed. a HIGH gateway has the pins and the Extended CAN-BUS works straight away. it is what you connect on the bus that will need to be coded/adapted.

My personal view is that it's a good idea to make admaps of ALL modules in the car - before changing anything!! It's a conservative approach - but if ever the loose stools and the fan blades collide mid-project, I never want to chastise myself with the response "I wish that I had an admap.........". As an alternative, you might consider making Raw hex file - which contains pretty-much the same data as an admap, but is able to "automatically" restore module values - see here

So B5(right light), B45(left light), and A29 (trigger wire from switch) would need to be done to retro-fit the fogs and i'd rather not have to climb under my dashboard more than needed. I've already upgraded my LDS, went with an "auto" light kit with light sensor and Euro switch with front/rear fog.
here's my very unofficial guess of the wiring for a LDS on a mk7 golf:

So, yes you are correct about A29 being the fog light trigger wire. But notice that there is only one fog light wire even-though there is actually a rear and a front fog light switch position. What happens in a LDS is that there is a piece of electronics inside the switch tself that sends a different signal to the BCM on pin A29 depending on whether the front, or rear fogs is selected.

The good aspect of this arrangement is that if your car already has rear fog lights, you won't need to run an A29 wire. A simple way of confirming the need for the extra wire (or not) is to eyeball the number of wires at the LDS connector; if there are 9 x wires in the loom- it's OK!
