On a Mk7.5 GTI, I'm looking for coding to set the climate controls buttons to be lit at all times. Very difficult to see them during the day with sunglasses on.

jwadle: I'm not sure if you are aware - but MQB platform vehicles use "Dimming Characteristic" curves to modulate the illumination of some of the LED based lights inside the cabin. These curves use reference points on a virtual X/Y axis to set the lighting levels of the LEDs. Whether there is user access to individual LEDs really depends on the LED in question and the model of the car; in general, there appears to be a tendency towards giving less access on newer models.

Anyhow, pending confirmation of the information in your auto-scan and based on the stuff in my database, the functions of the individual curves in the hex08 module (if access is available) is as follows:
Dimming_characteristic_2 = Temperature display
Dimming_characteristic_3 = LED fan
Dimming_characteristic_4= LED Seat heating
Dimming_characteristic_5 = Other LEDs

Again, assuming that your particular module allows access, you can rebuild these curves to suit your own desires. As a starting point - try changing the higher "Y" values to see the effect.

My car does have the dimming_characteristic parameters. I tried changing them from their OEM settings (10-21%) to 100% (which I assume means as bright as possible). This produced no visible result when the car is in daylight with the light switch in Auto, i.e. the LEDs appear to be very dim or off. At night, they are dimly lighted.

Any other thoughts?

jwadle: hmm............... yes, thoughts-a-plenty!!!

This said, I must admit at being somewhat surprised (and more than a tad incredulous) at reading your observations. Like death, taxes and the basics laws of the universe -I consider the operation of Dimming Characteristic curves to be immutable (at least it's fixed in my understanding of how PWM dimming works for LEDs on MQB platform vehicles).

But, since I like to think of myself as being a not unreasonable bloke and based on your findings in the post above - I'm prepared to re-consider my (now) tentatively delusional comprehension of these curves.

However, before I abandon a basic tenet in my long-held understanding of this matter, I'd value a look at the auto-scan for the vehicle in question (as previously requested by Uwe) and a copy of the adaptation channel map for the hex08 module would also be helpful.

For the admap, please set-up the dialogue box as shown below. Of course, enter "08" into Single Controller Address box instead of "09" as shown - the picture was developed for another purpose.

I'm attaching an Auto-Scan and the Adaptation Channel Map for module 08. As you can see, the values for Dimming_characteristic_2,3,5 parameter Y4 are set to 100%. I see no difference in lighting of the climate controls in any condition (day, night, Auto lighting, etc.).

Any additional suggestions would be appreciated.

However, before we consider the hex08 matter - there seems to be a more interesting issue happening in the Gateway installation list on your auto-scan report. Apparently the hex19 module is bitterly disappointed that it can't find an "undefined" module that has been programmed as being installed. The curious question about the identity of the mysterious "undefined" module might be answered further down the auto-scan report by the "cannot be reached" DTC for the hex81 module. I've never seen a MQB platform vehicle with a separate Gear Shift module; normally control of the shift mechanism in a DSG gearbox happens in the hex02 module. Can you advise how this nebulous module became registered in the Gateway installation list-please?

So, to the hex08 (non-.CSV) admap -it seems that the entire structure of the dimming_characteristic channels is (almost) identical to the myriad of other vehicles in my MQB database. I say "almost" because there are a few odd channel settings that may be remnants of your attempts to implement my previous suggestions - these changes should be reverted to their original factory settings.

Again, without intending any offense to your previous observations, my confirmation of the normalcy of the LED dimming control channels in your car strengthens my resolve in how the characteristic curve process operates. If you are prepared to try again, I suggest the following to demonstrate my hypothesis:

Let's experiment with LED for heated seats on the AC panel (I assume that your car has heated front seats because of the long-code setting in your auto-scan for this option in the BCM).

Change the setting for the channels below to 100%

dimming_characteristic_4-Y1 (2%)
dimming_characteristic_4-Y2 (2%)
dimming_characteristic_4-Y3 (5%)
dimming_characteristic_4-Y4 (10%)
dimming_characteristic_4-Y5 (85%)
dimming_characteristic_4-Y6 (100%)

If my understanding is correct, this should set the LED to maximum illumination under ALL cabin lighting conditions and for ALL LDS positions. Does this happen?

I will try the dimming settings you suggested for the seat heating controls.

In response to your other observations:
  • I am not aware of any changes to my OEM hex08 settings other than the three Y4 dimming parameters I set to 100% as I described in my earlier message. I would like to know which other parameters seem unusual to you.
  • Regarding your observations on the DSG settings: My car has APR Stage 1 software for both the ECU and TCU (DSG) which may explain what you noticed.

I will try the dimming settings you suggested for the seat heating controls.

In response to your other observations:
  • I am not aware of any changes to my OEM hex08 settings other than the three Y4 dimming parameters I set to 100% as I described in my earlier message. I would like to know which other parameters seem unusual to you.
  • Regarding your observations on the DSG settings: My car has APR Stage 1 software for both the ECU and TCU (DSG) which may explain what you noticed.

I have made the changes you suggested on all dimming_characteristic_4 Y parameters. With these set to 100% I see no difference between the seat heating controls and all other climate controls.
