2016 VW GTI (MK7) Sunroof Switch and Control Faults

Hi there. I have a 2016 VW GTI with sunroof issues, although they seem to be different than what I've seen online in other posts. The past two years I've had problems similar to what I've seen elsewhere that the auto-close controls get disabled. Usually I can correct the issue with the reset steps similar to what are posted here: https://golfmk7.com/forums/index.php?threads/sunroof-control-issue.327722/post-6782484

However, this time it seems like the switch is not responding to some of the controls. For example, I can tilt the sunroof but it won't open and close if I press the switch forward and backward. So I consulted my neighbor and he was able to run his VCDS on my car.

Luckily it seems like there are faults that it found with the sunroof, but I have been unable to identify how to correct them. I was nervous to do any kind of global reset because I've come across other posts where other problems came up after doing that.

Any suggestions? Below are the two faults that come up for the sunroof module:

721416 - Switch for Sunroof
B13C4 29 [008] - Signal Implausible
Intermittent - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear

722437 - Control Module for Power Sunroof
B13C6 54 [009] - Missing Calibration / Basic Setting
Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear

Okay thanks @Uwe! Would this issue be something I should just take into the dealer and get their estimate? Not knowing how the fault codes work, my concern originally was that they could potentially attempt to replace more than necessary, and I'd end up shelling out more cash.

Hard to say. Depends on the dealer.

Personally, I would spend $35 to pull a set of wiring diagrams for this exact car and then see if I could determine what's wrong using a multimeter.

adobeeditor: Most certainly follow Uwe's advice (about the WD) - but if my experience with a similar problem on an early model mk7 is any help from the WD will be limited - alas! The good aspect of the WD will be that it will identify the destinations on the 5 x pin connector from the switch assembly - back to the sunroof module. This is great for continuity testing of the loom wires and the interposing connector pins !

The problem that I had was understanding how the 5 x pin connector on the actual switch operated. Alas, the WD wasn't instructive in explaining the internal arrangement within the switch housing. In the end, after I'd satisfied myself that the loom wiring was OK - I just had to take a position and buy a replacement switch. I'm not sure if the WD for your particular mk7 will be similarly limiting - but here's a very much simplified wiring arrangement for my case:



I did this project some time ago and I'm not sure whether I dismantled the old switch to confirm the internal wiring; in any event, I can't recall my finding if I did, so such considerations are academic for your project (sorry)

However, if you look at my diagram, it is possible to hypothesize- perhaps?

Clearly pin#5 is the background LED lighting for the switch and although not specifically designated, I guess that its reasonable to conclude the cathode end of the LED is the brown wire on pin#4 (brown is often the color of earth wires on mk7 WD)

So that leaves 3 x pins to explain: 3 x pin switches are invariably single-throw, double-pole meaning that a single "input" from the control module can be switched to one of two other pins on the module. In this application, I guess that the "input" pin instructs the module whether the sunroof is open, or closed at the end of the travel position

A way of testing the integrity of this switch (and of determining which pin does what) is to separately measure the resistance between pins 1&2, and 1&3, and 3&2 with the switch in one position and again with the switch in the alternative position.This gives 6 x results. For each switch position, and if the switch is OK, you should get a reading of zero ohms on only one of the pin-pair tests (ALL remaining results should be infinity ohms). And, for the pin-pairs with these 2 x zero ohm results, the common pin-number in both will be the "input" terminal for the double throw mechanism.

Got the same issue, nothing works, same 2 faults appear, replacing the switch didnt helped, ODIS fails during calibration...
