Hi

I have a 2018 Amarok, the service interval is 24,000 miles which for me is way too long. I want to change it to every 10k which is what I will be doing and was wondering if VCDS can adjust the dash board reminder so that it resets to 10k instead of 24k?

"good oil quality" indicates this car is on flexible intervals, where it monitors the type of driving being done and decides when an oil change is necessary based on that.

The 40,000 km is a mileage-based inspection, not an oil change interval.

I believe you could manually set:
IDE03349-FIX: Max. distance until next mileage-related inspection to something less than 40,000 km (perhaps 15,000?).
and
IDE03350-FIX: Maximum time until next time-dependent inspection to something less than 720 days (perhaps 365?)

This would get you a reminder every 15,000 km or one year, whichever comes first.

I understand my car is on flexible intervals since my oil quality is "good". these are my questions:

1) how do I switch to a fixed interval of 10k km (ten thousand) or 365 days?
2) after the change is made, what adaptations, and how, do I need to change to next so the car will ask for new oil on JAN 2021?
3) should I change my mind, how do I go back to variable intervals?
4) what is ESI, what is SIA, what is FIX?
5) what is soot?

at the end of the game I believe I need a lesson about SRI in general, which is probably already existent so I will also accept a link :)

Darkchina: maybe something like this?

Calculation of days remaining to next FIX service:
  1. You want the service reminder on "JAN 21" - I assume this means 01/01/2021.
  2. Today is 28/07/2020 (here in Melbourne) meaning that it's the 210th day into the year.
  3. 2020 has 366 days (it's a leap year). Therefore there are 366 - 210=156 days to the end of the year.
  4. If you set SIA: Maximum Time to Service to 365 d (i.e. a yearly maintenance interval) - you need to set FIX: Time since Inspection to 209 d (i.e. 365-156) so that there are 156 days remaining until 01/01/2021

Settings below:

ESI: Oil Quality > poor oil quality (good oil quality)

SIA: Maximum Distance to Service > 10000 km (15000 km)
SIA: Maximum Time to Service > 365 d
FIX: Maximum Distance to Inspection > 20000 km (30000 km)
FIX: Maximum Time to Inspection > 730 d
FIX: Distance since Inspection > 0 km (19300 km)

It's a calculation done on diesel cars based on driving conditions, to estimate the soot loading of the oil. It may be higher or lower than the actual mileage driven since service. It it's higher it will tend to produce a service reminder warning sooner (assuming the car is on flexible intervals).

Thermal load is similar, but estimates thermal degradation of the oil. IIRC, this one is primarily for gasoline engines.

Darkchina: YES, and I agree - it's a very cryptic descriptor for switching between ESI and FIX (but then the adaptation channel descriptors that VAG uses are not generally known for being evocative of their function ;) )
