Hello,

had a 2019 Golf in with a Component Protection fault on the Distance regulation (item was replaced with a used one).

Car was involved in a minor accident causing front end damage. Headlights front bumper etc was replaced but nothing else.

The fault i am having is 16411 - Display For Tire Pressure Monitoring - C1146 02 - Signal failure

I believe because of this i am getting the other databus error faults.

The wheels have also been changed, but i have been assured that the new wheels have the TPMS sensors installed.

I have used GeKo to complete the CP removal and i have also recoded all modules back to factory but it hasn't changed anything.

I have the scan from ODIS also.

Any help is much appreciated!

^^^ hmm......... MQB vehicles with "real" TPMS (meaning not "indirect" TPMS) usually have a Tyre Pressure Monitoring System control unit which the manufacturer calls J502. The module usually lives @ address hex 65 on the CAN network and a typical response from a VCDS auto-scan looks like this:

That's not quite universally true. In the NAR market, there were definitely Golfs sold for a period 10-12 years ago that had direct TPMS.

That was because TPMS was a required safety feature here and the indirect systems were not yet sufficiently developed to meet the performance requirement. I expect the problem was the ability to detect equal under-inflation of all four tires. I still don't fully understand how they manage to do that with an indirect system, but somehow, at around MY 2011, they did.

I cannot for the life of me see what may be the issue.

I can see the coding states it has INDIRECT TPMS and I’ve tried to reset the tire pressure through basic settings - the factory reset of tire pressure finished correctly but the other warning display basic setting said out of range.

Anyone have any thoughts of what to check next?

I would fix the problem with Ambient Air Temperature sensor (G17).
And then do a tire pressure reset as described in the car manual.

I agree with Don, I think you have indirect TPMS as the ABS module is reporting the error. Check the coding and set to indirect and your error should go away.

Like the others already said in your Car probably there is only the "Indirect TMPS" installed, you dont need wheels with the Sensor.

Thanks to @Somnus you can find here the exel sheet which helps you decode the ABS Coding. (https://forums.ross-tech.com/showthread.php?17417-MK100-ABS-Coding&p=178255&viewfull=1#post178255)
Probably you have a wrong coding regarding TPMS in ABS.

Looking into your Byte 27
0x78 ==> 01111000 ==> Bit 4, 5 & 6 checked Direct TPMS w/ Radio (PR. 7K1+I8A/I8B/I8D/I8E/I8H)
That is wrong, the ABS Thinks that a Active TPMS is there but it is missing.

So now you have to find out the Error:

1. You really don’t have Direct TPMS than correct the ABS coding
one of this will be the right
Bit 4 & 5 checked Indirect TPMS w/ Radio (PR. 7K9+I8A/I8B/I8D/I8E/I8H)
Bit 4 & 6 checked Indirect TPMS w/ Radio (PR. 7K6+I8A/I8B/I8D/I8E/I8F/I8H)

2. If you have Direct TPMS than the Address 65: Tire Pressure (J502) Module is broken or lost connection to Power or Can, but still the Gateway Config is than wrong, too

Just let someone do a PR Code Lookup with your vin, than you know what was in the Car when it was produced.

P.S. I ran a search of that exact ECM# and got one Golf hit in our files. Luckily that user posted his (VCDS-Mobile) scan here in the past:

Similar Golf Variant, same ABS# as well with 7K1-Tire pressure monitoring system -and- PF3-Adaptive Cruise Control ACC stop & go up to 210 km/h, incl. Front Assist with Pedestrian Monitoring. For that reason his baseline ABS coding may be of assistance if something is goofed up on this Golf.

It definitely seems that 7K1 is indeed indirect based on the data seen so far. I'll have to update the language on my spreadsheet to hopefully remove any confusion

Looking at the auto-scan, it seems like the entire car is singularly unhappy with the ambient temp sensor. i'm not sure if that has a correlation with the TPMS, but fixing that fault could remove a rather large variable

Hehe ok the Data Basis was wrong here.
Than ABS is correctly coded, and your car only does have the Passive TPMS System.
Anyhow i think the Error in ABS is just meaning that ABS can talk to it's Display, in your case i would think the Display for TPMS is the Radio. Probably something wrong with it than.

This solved the issue.

Was a bad G17 sensor. As soon as it was replaced all lights are off!!

Just proves that one sensor can cause all those issues.

I'm glad you fixed the issue!

I wonder if the TPMS display error was in relation to a fault being stored in the Instrument Cluster, since the instrument cluster can display TPMS messages (Tire Pressure Low, Etc.).

I don't recall the source (SSP, repair manual, etc) but I have a fuzzy recollection that indirect TPMS requires a valid ambient air sensor reading prior to calibration. I believe it is also taken into consideration when WSS based discrepancies are detected in order to warn for low pressure properly .... but I would need to dig to locate the facts.

Either way, problems with Ambient air sensor readings can cause all kinds of issues such as AC compressor activation to stop, convertible roof system problems (For instance, the Eos won't even try to open the roof) and in this instance it prevented the indirect TPMS from resetting/calibrating.

I'm glad this one had a relatively good outcome and the fact that the thread helped clarify those TPMS versions for the coding spreadsheet is excellent! :thumbs:
