Success!! The engine is out of limp mode now and revving freely right up to the rev limiter. Has boost, and sounds great, revs fast and doesn't appear to be restricted or limited in any way. I would love to drive it to see, but there are many things to do before that happens as we are still mocking up and building a/c lines and things, and put the body back on. I was kind of waiting on the engine to work before finalizing everything. Now the project can proceed and I am reinvigorated and raring to go now that I am sure we have a usable engine.

The thing it was missing was the ABS controller. I separated the ABS harness from the car harness and wired in what I had. The rear sensors were cut in the accident that killed the original car, so I plugged in the fronts, hooked up 30 power, 15 power, can communication. I added ABS back into 19 gateway install list and added it into 01 engine via long coding, erased what codes it would let me and started the engine as a test. It seems happy now, no speed signal, no brake pressure signal, no brake light signal, nothing really but power and ground and can.

My laptop battery died during testing so I will recharge it and do an autoscan later and post it for academic perusal.

I mistakenly had the instrument cluster plugged in as I was using the tach in testing, but it does not care anymore if it is there. Fans were unplugged again due to no radiator fitted, and o2 sensors hanging in the air due to no exhaust

Just another quick update. I tried experimenting with subtracting things from the harness to see exactly what it could live without. first I tried the manual trans ecu and cluster and key matched set that I had and as expected it was back in limp mode. I had expected that because the ecu was stock and untouched by Marin, but had to try it to see.

Then since I had the modified ecu I thought i would see what it had to have to run and found that it only required the ABS controller hooked up, and cared not if cluster was there or key. I even tried the ABS with no sensors plugged in and it did not like that. So in the end I settled for shortening all the wires from the ABS to the sensors and clipping off all others except power 15 and 30, ground of course and can. The car starts and runs seemingly normally and revs free, and very fast too. Really want to drive it, but many things still to do first. Just reporting all this in case someone else is lacking enough brain cells to attempt something like this themselves, or just needs to laugh at someone.

I am still busily mounting permanently the things that I had mocked up before I knew I had a usable engine. I mounted the electronic accelerator pedal and used the throttle tube for the six wires going to it. Heater is placed and a/c mockup and mounting is next. Installing sound deadening material in the body as it is easy while supported on the hoist separate from the pan. I plan to sound deaden the floorboard on the pan too.

In the pics you can see the sound deadening progress so far, and the pedal mounted. You can also see in the last shot the expected receiver dryer placement and condenser location, and condenser fan laying on the floor too. It will be a pusher fan on the front.

It has been quite a while and this post has been left unresolved so to speak, so I am back with an update. This car is a side project of my own and not a paying customer and you all know how that goes. I have slowly been hammering away at it when possible and have the car driveable now. I did mostly achieve my goal of keeping it looking like any other beetle on the road. It drives well, stops well, a/c blow cold etc. I am pretty happy with the overall look.

All is good but there is still a problem or two to be worked out for which I need your inputs. The engine starts and runs and revs freely in neutral, but driving on the road it pulls very strongly till about 3500 RPM or so then flattens out. It will rev higher but the power is limited, no misfire, no other symptoms. It kind of feels like traction control power limitations I have felt in my own car, but it never lets up after the RPM level is achieved.

I have consulted Marin at advancedcarelectronics.com, yes he finally has a website, and he agrees with my theory on that. I will enclose an autoscan for you to draw your own. The suggestion is that I provide rear speed sensor input and abs pump connection at least to try to overcome my issue, which I will do as soon as I can find time. The main reason to post here now rather than after the car was complete and ready to go into service as was my plan, is that we desire to know what digit to change in the ABS coding to switch the unit from auto to manual trans. The controller has a code for the missing module and I need to try to rectify that.

Any thoughts, comments, and aid are greatly appreciated. Yes I know I have the wrong CAN, but hopefully long coding will still work.

Regardless of the comparison view you prefer the strings are nearly identical. I'll use the Long ones which are use-able for the control module:

I honestly don't see how either ABS coding bit would directly cause the 01315 - Transmission Control Module - No Signal/Communication DTC but I'd tweak those positions one at a time and see what happens. I would start with Byte 15: A14B400C49250001851402EB9221004020100012

Byte 16/Bit 0 is HHC but it couldn't hurt to try turning it on since that was Manual Trans factory-like.

In regards to the 3,500 RPM limit I'm worried that the lack of G85 could be to blame. I'm comparing apples and oranges but I have a fuzzy recollection that (older 2009/10 era Golf 5/6 based) R8 owners coded out G85 to prevent ESP for track-use and that limited the engine RPM which wasn't what they were shooting for! I hope I'm wrong in that regard because G85 would have been in the 44-Steering assist module in most (if not all) Jetta models with the 1.4T.

With my 2.0TSI swap in my 1990 Golf I found the missing oil pressure switch to cluster connection to limit me to 4k rpm. Would boost cut and fall on its face.
With cluster connected it was happy.
If your engine has 2 oil pressure switches then one is wired to ECU, the other sends a signal to the cluster.

I also have G85 error but my ABS works. No power or rpm limit with mine due to G85 missing.

My other thought is abs speed signal. I didn't read anywhere that you have wheel sensors and reluctor rings mounted?
I installed the entire abs system in mine and have it working so vcds shows vehicle speed which the ecu requires.

Thanks for the responses and I will start implementing things as soon as time allows, this season has been very busy, not that I am complaining.

The ABS, and everything for that matter, came from a 2016 Jetta SE kessey car. The ABS is codes as an auto because of that. I don't think it is a cause of limiting necessarily but I would like one less code if I can get it.

I did not wire in the oil pressure feeds because I was going to use the stock 74 cluster, such as it is, more of a speedo with lights in it. I do have a cluster connector wired in since in the early stages I had to have cluster and key reader coil to run it at all. I had planned on using a conventional oil pressure switch to signal the light in the cluster eventually to make it work like the original 74. I have not checked yet but the cluster signal may just be that kind of signal.

I did not hook up the ABS system mainly due to lack of room. I had considered and rejected the idea numerous times. I did not mount any sensors near a reluctor ring since Marin got it to free rev in neutral anyway. I had considered mounting a tone ring on one wheel or axle and having all the sensors mounted to see it. They would all see the same speed all the time and be satisfied enough to never engage ABS or traction control, was my thinking. Alternatively I do have a GPS speed sensor from Dakota digital that I was going to use for the cruise control. It will produce many programmable outputs for speed. I believe the one they wanted for the cruise was 4700 per mile square wave, which is probably what the car wanted too as the cruise I am using is for a 2016 Jetta. I had thought of feeding that signal to all four sensors of the ABS rather than fooling with the tone ring and sensor mounting. Any thoughts on that people? Will one signal shared by all be compatible? I don't know and will probably try that first as it is likely easier to do than the sensors. I had originally thought of doing that to get the factory cruise activated, but opted for the aftermarket for ease of install, it's only real connection to the car is an inline pedal harness and of course power and ground and speed signal.

The main reason I jettisoned the ABS and other systems is room. There is really no extra room in a Beetle to hide anything extra, unless you opt for no back seat at all which I want to retain to keep up the stock 74 look if nothing else. Now that the body and pan are reunited there is even less room to work on anything so I will always take the easiest way I can.

Thank you all for any help and advice as this is untrodden ground and possibly on the fringes of the overall "retrofit" theme as I am flat putting the wrong equipment in the wrong car.

Quick update. I had a little time to spare this weekend so I tried the easiest things I could first. I tried to long code the ABS into believing it was a manual trans model but it rejected the coding for some reason. possibly the wrong CAN bus or maybe it is hardwired to the be AT like the ECU was. Another thought I had but didn't think of till later is that it may be confused by the ECU I have now as the VIN won't match it's memory. If/when I get time I will plug it the matching ECU and cluster and try again. I don't think it is necessarily related to the limp mode, but If I can quell one more code I will.

Next I tested the wiring to the cluster and I had retained the oil pressure switch connection, according to wiring schematic there is only one sensor on a 1.4 and it is depicted as a switch type normally open and closed by pressure much like the high pressure warning switch of old. Anyway I plugged in the cluster and took it for a drive, no joy there, but I will retain the cluster till this is all resolved and maybe then try trimming the components back.

Next step is to hook up rear ABS sensors. That is not very easy now that the body is bolted on because I kind of buried the Controller in a fairly unreachable place. I am hoping it is happy to just see the sensors and not need a speed signal, but knowing my luck that is not true. I did leave accessible from the ABS harness the wire that would go to the traction control switch if it had one, so I may play with that angle too and see if It will turn it off. I had tried it earlier and according to VCDS at the time it did not indicate that it shut it off. This was before Marin massaged the ECU and before front sensor install so I think it worth revisiting.

Hmm, I have a horrible feeling you're going to have to get a speed signal from that abs unit.
From the research I did the front sensors and reluctor rings is enough but I decided to go the whole way and fit all 4 / plumb in pump also.

I have that feeling too, kinda thought I might need them from the start, but hoped not. I just need to figure out how and what to mount a ring to. I have to measure but I thought possibly taking a mk4 front hub ring and machining the center to fit and drill it for the cv joint bolts on the beetle, they are all 4 the same so mounting sensor locations are more flexible. I know Toyota and some others have tone rings pressed onto their axle joints, if I could find the right size and sweat one of those on, that might also work. I doubt the speed signal needs to be totally accurate to work. I would have both, or all four if needed look at the one ring so they would always see the same speed.

I will keep trying one thing at a time to see what works, unfortunately the shop is really busy and the heat of the summer is here to sap my strength so my unsupervised playtime is limited so I don't know how quick I can act.

Volvos use 48 teeth wheel.

9 mm wide by 81mm OD by 71.84 ID or 72 mm machine to. These are press fit. Can be had cheap part number 30735955.

Febi-Bilstein $8 bux each on Amazon.

BE CAREFUL have seen a few Chinese knock-offs that had 49 teeth, I kid you not!

Yeah, I need a 49 tooth sensor. Actually I don't think it would matter in this case as speed accuracy is not necessarily important, just a speed signal, and all sensors will read the same one. If I can get accuracy though all the better. The problem with the Volvo one is size, the cv joints on the standard beetle axle is 90mm flange. Some step down a little to to the 90mm also. I will have to have to hang a caliper on one to see the actual OD. I can not find a listing for tone rings by size or teeth, only by application if there at all.

I do not know what the jetta had for a tooth count in the first place if I try for accuracy. Plus I do not know what size tires I will end up with, although I suspect they will be bigger for gearing changes, and wider for traction. On my few drives so far, even with the 3000 RPM power limiting I have heard the rear tires squealing like little piggies on takeoffs sometimes.

Hoping my workload frees up a little soon so I can spend some time on this hands on. In the meantime I will continue engineering and parts acquisition.

I tried mk3 rings on mine (mk4 is the same) Didn't work.
You have to use mk5/6/7. Sensors and reluctor rings are different and much more accurate. They also detect rollback.
Can't remember what the hub size is on the inside of a Beetle brake disc but hopefully you can machine that to fit a reluctor rings over it.
I got some old mk5 wheel bearings and pressed them apart to harvest the rings out of them.

Did you press them apart to look at them? If so, could you get me some dimensions? ID, OD, thickness. Don't throw them away just yet if you haven't. I have a lathe so I can make adapters if need be. I was thinking of mounting them on the axleshaft itself. I doubt there is room anywhere else.

86 magnets is quite a few, much finer than earlier sensor rings.
