Hi,

just hoping someone could shed some light on a ABS problem I am having with my wifes car.
A little history first
It had an ABS fault so I plugged in and vagcom could not communicate with module, I read a little and found it was most likely the ABS module gone bad. So I looked online and sent it to cheap ABS, I got it back plugged in and the ABS fault had gone (brake error warning light) and vagcom could communicate and told me of a few codes, scan below:

Saturday,31,January,2015,15:34:28:34201
VCDS -- Windows Based VAG/VAS Emulator
VCDS Version: 14.10.0.0 (x64)
Data version: 20141022

Mileage: Repair Order: rene dub
Address 03: ABS Brakes Labels: 8E0-614-111-ASR.lbl
Control Module Part Number: 3B0 614 111
Component and/or Version: ABS/ASR 5.3 FRONT D00
Software Coding: 00021
Work Shop Code: WSC 05314
VCID: 53AF696EA170D1B9829-508E
3 Faults Found:

00285 - ABS Wheel Speed Sensor; Front Right (G45)
30-00 - Open or Short to Plus
18258 - Powertrain Data Bus
P1850 - 35-00 - Missing Message from ECU
18034 - Powertrain Data Bus
P1626 - 35-00 - Missing Message from TCU

I replaced the RHS ABS sensor, as I thought it was a simple sensor failure and logged in to watch the wheel speeds on all corners and confirmed no speed pick up on that wheel. cleared the codes, re scanned and it was the same as before. All the wiring looks good as do the connections.
A little more online searching led me to the coding of the ABS module which may be wrong. sure enough, the coding is 00021 which is for a 1.8t with 5 speed auto with canbus, this car is a 2.8 with a 5 speed without canbus (I think).
so I tried to change the coding, but the ross tech wiki says it cannot change the coding although I did try.
would this cause the fault or am I missing something else. The other 2 faults support that the ecm is looking for coms on the canbus but as its not present it cant communicate. Any ideas?

thanks.

Can you please post a complete, un-edited Auto-Scan of the entire car?

I can't think of any reason the module would have changed coding on its own, which means the repair company you used may have picked another refurb/repair unit off the shelf and sent that back to you, instead of your own. Given that it's not taking re-coding for you, and it's not entirely clear from your message whether your 2.8's "5 speed" is manual or auto, I'd like to see the complete Auto-Scan so we can make sure the module's reported part number is even the right one for your car.

You don't by chance have a saved scan from this car from before the ABS started acting up, do you?

Seems to me it should be coded 00031, not 00021. If this is a MY 2000 car, it should be "With CAN bus". An Auto-Scan would tell us for sure whether it's with or without CAN bus. ;)

Uh, nope! Either the car isn't really 4Motion (and I'm sure you'd know) or you've been sent the wrong ABS module.

this would really piss me off if that's the case, it is a 4 motion, that much I know!
I sent this back early last year because I couldn't communicate with the abs module, got it back, could communicate but said it was a fault with rhs sensor. just figured it was an easy fix and only just now started to look at it.

Hi guys,

below is the full auto scan I did tonight. I contacted matt at Cheap ABS, he is 100% sure the module he returned is the one he received. There never used to a problem with the ABS module coding but now there seems to be, is there a way I can change it?, I believe it is still the right p/n, the ABS pump p/n is 8E0 614 111A.

below is the full auto scan I did tonight. I contacted matt at Cheap ABS, he is 100% sure the module he returned is the one he received.
I'm at a bit of a loss then. 4Motion ABS modules usually say something like 'QUATTRO' or 'allrad' in the Component/Version field for the AWD variant of the controller. There's no reason why your module should have changed its coding to an incorrect engine type, and there simply aren't any coding options on that module for 4Motion vs. FWD. Do you know anything about the specific repair work that was done, what components were supposedly replaced?

If one of our resident erWin / PL24 gurus happens to see this, it would be nice to get a lookup of his factory-correct ABS control module by VIN from the scan.

There never used to a problem with the ABS module coding but now there seems to be, is there a way I can change it?, I believe it is still the right p/n, the ABS pump p/n is 8E0 614 111A.
To reiterate Uwe's question above: do you have a saved VCDS scan from this car, from before the ABS problem? It would answer a lot of questions.

Did you buy this car new, or used? Do you know its complete service history, including whether this module may have been replaced in the past?

Wrong module is installed....... Cheap is right.

Component and/or Version: ABS/ASR 5.3 FRONT D00 <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< Hence FRONT!

Correct part numbers are as follow's for 2000 4 motion.

8E0-614-111N or legacy # M ABS+EDS ( >> 3B-XE126 366 )

8E0-614-111E or legacy # A ABS+ EDS ( 3B-XE126 368 >> )

8E0-614-111AT or Legacy # T ABS/ESP CARS ALL >>

Based on production VIN # and whether you have an ESP switch........ you should be able to figure out the correct part # with above data.

:p

An auto-scan would of made things faster......

I believe it is still the right p/n, the ABS pump p/n is 8E0 614 111A.
VW sells the electronics and hydraulic block together as a single integrated module. You've got the circuit board from a 3B0 614 111 pump bolted to the hydraulics of an 8E0 614 111A pump. This is definitely not a valid combination.

Correct part numbers are as follow's for 2000 4 motion.

8E0-614-111N or legacy # M ABS+EDS ( >> 3B-XE126 366 )

8E0-614-111E or legacy # A ABS+ EDS ( 3B-XE126 368 >> )

8E0-614-111AT or Legacy # T ABS/ESP CARS ALL >>
But your car's MY production serial number is older than the production phase-in of the -111A pump, which is weird. So I went back to your Auto-Scan for your VIN...

WVWLH23B41E035448

Unless someone has REALLY been tampering with this car, you have a MY2001 Passat, not MY2000. That explains that. I don't know how your ABS pump electronics got mis-matched with the car, be it you or a previous owner or your ABS repair vendor. Fact of the matter is, it's wrong and needs to be fixed. There are used 8E0-614-111A pump assemblies on eBay for < $100. For a high mileage MY2001 car, I'd give that a shot. Keep your hydraulic block and swap over the electronics.

Thanks guys for all your input, this one has really got me confused now.
unfortunately, i don't have an older scan from before when the car "seemed" fine. The car was bought 4 years ago, only ever had a code for the "emissions workshop" which was an o2 sensor. when the ABS module failed i simply just sent it off to be fixed or get a new one for $1500 as quoted by the dealer.
Maybe someone before has tampered with it, unfortunately i just don't know. All i have to go on is what VAG-COM and you guys say. As far as year and VIN, the door sticker is june 2000, but i believe it was registered in 2001.
i'll look into the used pump option, so i need to look for a 8E0-614-111A pump, remove the module and replace mine, correct?
once again , thanks for all your help, no way i would have gotten this far on my own.

Neither of which is relevant to the equipment that's correct for the car.

At this point, there's no doubt in my mind that the ABS module you have in it is incorrect and will never work properly. Moreover, if "Cheap ABS" really did return the module you pulled from this car, then it would never have worked correctly.

Sounds to me like the wrong module was returned if it worked fine before the condition existed.

For informational purposes only.

VW-AUDI has dropped the cost on a module only option for under 400 USD..... so it makes no sense not to buy the unit from them new with revision.

or less NEW! Todays examples............

Should be but the yards are also a roll of the dice.

Does your car have an ESP switch?
Can you post a picture of the white tag in trunk or service book?

this ones on ebay, its from an A6 but it should work?
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/2000-AUDI-A6...Parts_Accessories&hash=item20f477bfda&vxp=mtr

Also just looked at the local breakers, they have an A6 there too with a 8E0-614-111A pump.
So as long as the pump is that p/n the module bolted to it would also be correct?
Should be fine, yes. You should be able to transfer the electronics from any 8E0-614-111A pump. You could also install a newer 8E0-614-111E pump, which is also compatible with your car, but you'd want to install a complete matched electronics and hydraulic block assembly.

Jack found some rather attractive prices on new genuine pumps in his earlier post. If it were my car, I'd go with one of those. OTOH, the $39 used pump electronics may still be good, and you've not wagered much if it turns out defective. Your call.

it has no ESP switch, ill go to the breakers in the morning, pull the module and try it, if it works , great and hopefully it will fix my issues. if not or it turns out to be the wrong number, ill go for the new one as given by Jack.
Thanks again for all your replies and help, im fairly handy with cars mechanically but all this electronic and coding wizardry is a bit (ok, quite a lot actually) above my understanding.
Ill keep this updated as I hopefully progress, thanks.

p.s, Matt from cheap ABS has offered to swap out my module, he says it should be 0 273 004 284. ill check it tomorrow as the part number is hidden underneath the module and I have to remove it to see.
