P0638, fixed, cleared code, then no start

Well I'm back again. 2011 A3 TDI CBEA engine...

Last night the glow plug light started blinking and the CEL came on, but the car was running normally. I did not save the auto scan, but I did pull P0638 - Throttle Body Actuator (J338), Bank 1 - Range/Performance Problem/Implausible Signal.

So today I removed the throttle body (I know TDI's don't need a throttle body, and this one actually regulates the EGR), and cleaned all the carbon from the inside. The butterfly seemed to move much more smoothly afterwards. Put everything together, cleared the codes, and took it out for a drive. I thought there was an adaptation to be done, but was unable to do it. Apparently it doesn't need to be done on a TDI, according to the Ross Tech Throttle Body Alignment video on youtube. Car ran really well. Went into a store for about an hour, and it wouldn't start. I had to crank if for 10 seconds, and it started a bit rough then smoothed out. Drove home and everything again was fine. I did another autoscan and saved it this time. No new codes, the three that are there are preexisting, I addressed those in another topic. But here it is anyway:

So whatever triggered the no start didnt store a code or set off the CEL. I might go on a drive in an hour or two after the car cools off to see if I can replicate it. Just not sure of this is a "one off" anomaly related to the TB cleaning or a sign of something else.

Actually, I think there is a Basic Setting for the "Throttle Valve Control Module (J338)" in Group 124 on that engine, but I've never done it and don't have a detailed procedure handy for it.

I will have to go back and check. This Ross Tech video showed three examples, but none of them seemed to work with my car. I tried going into engine>basic settings and selected throttle adaptation from the drop down menu. I saw some numbers change when I hit "on/off" but didn't hear anything happen. The video suggested that an error might occur if you have a TDI. Later, I tried the output test for the throttle valve, and it worked ok, as I could hear it opening and closing. Dont know if this potentially affected anything.

Those are traditional gasoline throttle bodies, which are the primary means of controlling the power produced by a gasoline engine. The engine management supplies an appropriate amount of fuel to match however much air the engine is getting.

A diesel works differently. Traditionally, they ran completely un-throttled, getting full airflow at all times, and the amount of power they produced was controlled by fuel flow. The problem with this is that it results in a very lean mixture under all conditions except full power output, and this produces lots of NOx emissions. The "fix" for that is to replace a good bit of the air that the engine would normally pull in with recirculated exhaust gas. In order to control this precisely, "throttles" we added to diesel engines as well, but they don't perform the same function in a diesel; they still don't control the power output; they just control (restrict) the amount of excess oxygen present during combustion.

Thanks Uwe, I read something similar regarding diesel engines. Perhaps it was a coincidence of some kind. The only thing I can think of is when I unplugged the throttle valve/anti-shudder valve, that some other part of the car had to adapt or adjust. I know diesels can be hard to start in cold weather but it was only around 50 deg outside. It could also be the fuel filter, as I just purchased the car about three weeks ago, so I don't know if it has been replaced.

Otherwise, it ran just fine all day today.

Did you know you can use VCDS to teach yourself using VCDS blocks & how to back trace by unplugging sensor on rail and observation of DTC/blocks to reflect the value if you believe a caption isn't documented, now did you read VCDS captions?

I did not, I'm still learning my way around parts of the program, and am a novice with it. Did the log I post show anything of significance? Other than the engine speed, I do not know what the values of those fields are supposed to be.

Group 28 shows: engine RPM, ignition timing, *empty block*, and pressure (of what? Hpfp maybe?)

Hovering the mouse over each block does not show any captions. Thanks Uwe. Both those channels show the same data, I logged both of them.

Based on the captions in VCDS, everything looks normal except "High Fuel Pressure (specified), in group 20, "High Fuel Pressure (specified)" shows it should have a range of 250-300 bar at idle, while in group 21 it shows that it should read 220-330 bar at idle. The log shows it settles at 336 bar. a minute or two later after the logging stopped it went to 328 bar. I'm not sure what that is linked to. Here is the log:

ALSO, after this, I ran an errand, when I came back the glow plug light was blinking again and it returned the same P0638 code. The car drove fine. I have no idea why the glow plug light comes on for things that have nothing to do with the glow plugs. I did an autoscan:

So, my guess is that the Anti shudder valve (or throttle valve) could be faulty. I'm still not sure why the car suddenly was so difficult to start after I cleaned it, and since then has started and ran just fine. Also not sure if the slightly high fuel pressure is a concern.

Given the weird 00003 error code that neither I or you were able to figure out in a previous thread, is it possible there is an electrical issue? I checked the grounding point next to the battery and it was fine. I don't know if there are other grounds to look for, or if this is even worth pursuing.

A couple other points in case they are relevant - when I tested the battery with a multimeter, it showed 12.5v with the car off, and 13.8v with the car running, which seems good. Also, the resistance of the glow plugs seemed good (one plug showed 1.1 ohms, the other three were at .8 ohms

The first suggestion, from what I read, was to clean it, which I did a few days ago, as I mentioned in my first post. The code stayed away for a few days until this evening. On your suggestion, I looked at the wiring from the glow plug harness and it showed no wear. I have not yet traced the wiring from the ASV and when I looked at it over the weekend I could not see where it went to.

And yes, I assume the the ASV would be covered under the dieselgate warranty but I dont know for sure. I decided it would be easier to try cleaning it first then making a dealer appointment if needed.

On the other hand, I'm at least learning a few things here, getting practice with VCDS, and familiarizing myself with a new-to-me engine.

If the Flap can't operate than EGR would suffer function, don't you just love the vicarious nature of all this?

Did you know your time spent and purchase of VCDS is reimbursable under useful life warranty?
