Hi guys, i am a newby in using VCDS, i have my HEX V2 just a month and i was able to do some tweaks on my car which i am really satisfied with :)...

Now i need help to find a way to somehow keep my low beams (light switch: AUTO lights) from NOT turning on when i turn my ignition into the pre-start position.. i have Bi-Xenons and i never liked that they flickered a bit when the engine was starting. the engine uses alot of power to start and the lights flicker because of it and i think it shortens the life span of the bulb. Thats why i always turn them off and after the engine starts i would turn my light switch to AUTO... from experience i know that OPEL cars have this setting where the lights turn on after the engine starts, not before... is there anyway in changing this option(in adaptations) that the low beams DONT start before the engine starts. of course i am talking about keeping the light switch on AUTO lights all the time...

Thanks for your help..

Adam

I don't believe you have a choice. you have the switch with AUTO, so you have a light/rain sensor. if it's dark, low beams will switch on when turning ignition, no exceptions.

I understand your stress about Xenon bulbs, I would be stressed too. time to retrofit some nice LEDs, or just keep going AUTO after engine on. remember this also means no Coming Home and no Leaving Home.

Even if the "hand-brake" (EPB on that car, I think) is set?

I don't have a car like that handy to try on...

^^^^ Yep - like this (but ONLY if the car has the settings shown in brackets below):
left-side low-beam
ENG116942-ENG116001-Leuchte6ABL LC5-Lichtfunktion G 6 > Handbremse ist angezogen (nicht aktiv)
ENG116942-ENG116004-Leuchte6ABL LC5-Dimming Direction GH 6 > minimize (maximize)

right-side low-beam

ENG116943-ENG116020-Leuchte7ABL RB1-Lichtfunktion G 7 > Handbremse ist angezogen (nicht aktiv)
ENG116943-ENG116023-Leuchte7ABL RB1-Dimming Direction GH 7 > minimize (maximize)

The result of the tweak is that the low-beams will be turned-off when the hand-brake is applied (tested on EPB model)

Don's right it does work. However just for arguments sake your car being a 1.6 does not come with bi-xenons as standard, they must've been retrofitted. Can you please post an autoscan for completeness so we have a record of your car and the modules it contains. Some retrofitters don't change the BCM or add in module 55 or 4b (depending on the headlight), some use aftermarket Headlights. The scan will help us to help you if something doesn't work as it should. Keep a record of all changes yourself!

I thought it was only possible to link the DRL lights to the parking brake. cool, I might use the tweak as well.

Don, since I am a little confused, would you check my 09 admap and tell me how to change it?

Don's right it does work.

myoumus: Let's give credit where credit is due: in truth, this was Uwe's idea - I was just the technician, testing an hypothesis!!

A further consideration which has not been raised as yet is whether the resulting lighting effect is road legal in the country where the car is driven. I'm not sure - the answer to this question I will leave to the "tweaker"

Don

I thought it was only possible to link the DRL lights to the parking brake. cool, I might use the tweak as well.

Don, since I am a little confused, would you check my 09 admap and tell me how to change it?

darkchina: the standard tweak for handbrake controlled DRLs (i.e. ENG141647-ENG122184-Außenlicht_Front-Tagfahrlicht Dauerfahrlicht bei Handbremse abschalten> active) is really a quick-version of the instructions that I posted for the low-beams.

You can apply my exact-same instructions to any of the 35 x leuchte-sets in the BCM to enable this function on any lamp(s) - albeit the application might be a tad weird and more than a tad illegal on some lamps (like turn-signal for example).

As to whether the instructions would work on your BCM, the short answer is "yes" - but only if your MQB platform vehicle doesn't use LCMs to manage the headlamp fittings. I've had a peek at your auto-scan and I don't believe this to be the case on your car,

Don

My theory is that one shouldn't be driving on the public roads with the parking brake set to begin with, so....

Uwe: I do understand your point which was clearly said as a humorous aside - but the dilemma that I was contemplating was the classic handbrake-start and how this maneuver affected this tweak at night.

Not sure if folk on your side of this fragile blue planet are familiar with this term - but it's when the handbrake is applied by the driver to stop the car from rolling back. I must admit that I don't do many handbrake-starts these days with the advent of hill-hold and auto-hold, but occasionally it is still necessary!

So- the situation is that if the tweak is enabled and the driver uses a hand-brake start at night - the low-beams will turn-off! Probably not the best outcome I would think!!

Also, to darkchina's point about the boffins @ VW HQ having just one short-cut way of the hand-brake disabling the car's lamps and this applying only to the DRLs - this might also be pertinent to this discussion. Perhaps the combined sum of VW's massive corporate intellect has considered this option and decided not to include a low-beam option for safety reasons?

But hey, my musings are just that - the ruminations of a troubled mind!! I never did figure out how many fairies can dance on the head of a pin and the question of the legality of the low-beam tweak might well be up there with the nature of infinity, or the meaning of life (not 32)!!! ;)

Hah! That's a scenario I didn't contemplate because I've never used handbrake starts myself. IMO with proper clutch technique, I do no think they are at all necessary, or even particularly useful, but I understand some people were taught to prevent roll-back that way. FWIW, I learned to drive a manual trans in a vehicle that did not have a hand-brake; the emergency/parking brake was a fourth pedal all the way on the left, so hand-brake starts simply were not an option.
