Hi all

I have a 2005 Audi A6 C6 saloon 3.0 TDI quattro .
i ran a scan and noticed it hang on the VCDS diag [05] - Access/Start Authorisation
the whole run return no errors but if I look at the 05 channel there is nothing , it just says controller doesn't support DTc or there is a communication failure ?
if I try to run a scan on the 05 channel itself VCDS just seems to keep trying it , I waited for 10 mins .

I checked in the options and these are set to default for USB and that the 'force K 'was unchecked .

I did try it with this checked and this time after 5 mins came back with a pop up of communication failure .

the car works ok and starts first time ,

anybody got any ideas ? I guess what ever chip on the 05 channel that communicates with the ODB bus has failed but the actual part is still functioning . many thanks

I don't think your theory is correct. The Kessy module at address 05 communicates with the diagnostic Gateway in the car using the same CAN network that it uses to communicate with everything else, and if it were unable to communicate with the rest of the stuff in the car, the car wouldn't start and there would be plenty of faults in other modules about it.

I'm not sure what's going on there exactly. My daughter has an 05 A6 that's been in the family since new. It's got a 3.2 gasoline engine rather than a 3.0 TDI, but the Kessy should be reasonably the same.

Do me a favor and post up whatever scan data you've got from it. It's possible there are clues in other modules.

HI Uwe

here is the last scan I see no issues except the statement on channel 05 with the

No Faults Found
or DTCs not supported by controller
or a communication error occurred

if i try the specific 05 address it just times out

i would say although the canbus is used buy the controller/kessy the diagnostic part of the bus ( which VCDS) uses, use different ports/connections , this is what happens in pc's/tablets/phones/laptops , but was interested to see if there is any specific problem .

as i say before the car runs fine and is currently commuting 100 miles a day
many thanks
Martin

OK, I don't see an obvious reason or clues here.

Unfortunately my daughter's 2005 A6 is 200 miles away right, and all she has is a HEX-NET, while you're using an older HEX+CAN. Assuming she comes home this weekend, I'll try to check her car with a HEX+CAN.

Hi Jack

sorry I am a basic user , I am assuming check on of the subfields under the controler 05 ?.
problem is VCDS won't actually open that controller.

on another note I was thinking of taking the battery off so the car has no power for 12 hours just to see if this resets anything that might be stuck in the kessy , as as far as I am aware the car has not had all power removed for 12 years now :O .
would there be any issues with this like security codes for radios or anything , I only ask as I have never thought about doing this ?

No, he would like you to check:
[01-Engine]
[Adaptation-10]
Channel 091
... and report the stored value there.

on another note I was thinking of taking the battery off so the car has no power for 12 hours just to see if this resets anything that might be stuck in the kessy , as as far as I am aware the car has not had all power removed for 12 years now :O .
would there be any issues with this like security codes for radios or anything , I only ask as I have never thought about doing this ?

HI Guys

went to 01 - Engine

but there was no [Adaptation-10] only [Long Adaptation 0A] hope that was correct

went in there and then to channel 91 [Immobilizer Status] stored value = 4

(I can't see how to add images here )

is that what you required ?

thanks

Yes

Four means the ECU is set as married and the immobilizer is functional in eeprom, however, that doesn't mean that someone may have still tampered or extended the time clock in the flash to continue to operate the engine regardless with FOD.

Did you try an install on another PC or a re installation, is K line talking first forced or CAN and is K line active too?

I'm thinking that VCDS may not be configured properly, the interface/USB or computer you are using maybe having an issue that possibly Uwe should check into.

I can try another PC , the force K option is unchecked ( not ticked) .

the VCDS seems to communicate with all other parts ok and without issue

many thanks for your time :) much appreciated

I can't imagine the Kessy on this car being K-line.

Affirmative Uwe no K line in WD on this one.

I think the board would support it although not wired.

Either someone has already set up a defeat of ESCL or you should expect a problem real soon like all the others for a lock or board rebuild and is pretty popular?

HI All

just a update on all of this to give some of my findings .

over a year ago the car seemed to stop seeing the key ,
insert key , MMI worked and a few other systems , doors unlocked with fob and also windows would work via the fob .
but turn the key car was dead .....
as I can't communicate with kessy , i could see no failure codes .
after many key inserts and turns it would pop into life .

garage recommended a new barrel but at £300 I got a second hand one for £30 and we fitted it , boom ...car worked flawlessly for about 10 months.
it then started to do the exact same thing .
I thought i just had another duff key barrel (which sums my luck up really ) so bought a new one in a sale for £220 and got it fitted , again started working flawlessly this time for only 5 months and the same thing is happening again .

after a lot of searching and as many have said it seems to be a failure on the Kessy of a few very cheap parts
this is shown in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?reload=9&v=bsnY6W1mjT8

&
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzmocaX9S0E

although most failures seem to be of a micro switches but the steering lock still works after clearing codes in the 05 Access /start auth and what i didn't realise is my steering lock has stopped working ( my guess is there is a relay that cycles the lock motor when you put the key in the barrel and again when you take the key out ) and my relay has failed while the lock was open .
now I think it is this that has stopped the kessy talking to the VCDS as it is waiting for the steering lock to cycle to continue and is confused that it is already open as the standard default condition is steering lock is shut and so sits there waiting for the lock to cycle which never comes .
so basically waits for the VCDS time out and VCDS then just continues and ignores the 05 Access /start auth .

in addition , I am going to remove my kessy and replace the the micro swithes and relays to see if it fixes it , if it doesn't I will need to scrap the car :( , it has only done 200000 miles

HI All just a post to complete thing and hopefully help someone else out :)

so got my Kessy out and opened up to my garage 45 mins to get it out and me 10 mins to open it up
here is a great video to help peeps from a yank mechanic - CLAY - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzmocaX9S0E

bought a new relay for £4 and 3 off micro switches for £12 took it to work and replaced them took back to garage who refitted it all and guess what .
all seems to be working steering lock now works and VCDS now talks to it . so a grand total of £124
well worth a try as you have nothing to loose.
Audi wanted £2000 +vat FFS

It definitely seemed that the steering lock being open seems to confuse the kessy and you get no response from it .
you can test this out by taking the fuse out to the Kessy ( drives side fuse box ) for 5 mins and then the Kessy will respond for a couple of scans then stop responding .

hope this helps someone out :)

is there any tests or adaption test you can run from the VCDS just to try things out ?
