Hello,

I was doing some searching on Google, and stumbled upon this:

http://www.aliexpress.com/item/vw-V...-Side-Assist-FOR-Passat-B7-CC/1683757869.html

It is a side assist (Blind spot) indicator that fits in the side mirrors.
I did some more searching and I can not find any info about what is involved in the install of this item.
Does anyone know if it will work in a VW mk6 GTI? Is the mk6 capable in VAG-COM to activate something like this?
The mirrors in mk6 GTI look exactly the same as the ones pictured.

I just found this website, but its all in German (I think) of the install
http://www.bronken.de/sideassist/

any one have any input on this?

Thanks
--Mike

I don't think any of the Mk6 Golfs had "front assist" or "lane assist" functions did they? (I believe that only arrived on the Mk7 IIRC). If the Mk6 doesn't then I'm fairly certain it won't have the required electronics to support "side assist" capabilities, or even the option of retrofitting it because whatever control module is needed / responsible for that (probably a different BCM) most likely won't be compatible with the rest of the electronics already on the car.

Gary,
That might be true, but the PLA 2.0 with park assist wasn't available for the MK6 as well, but it can be retro fitted, and it works great from what I see in some videos.
I was just curious if anyone has made an attempt on this. I would love to install this in my car. The Drivers in my area are crazy, and a blind spot indicator would be awesome.

That page talks about retrofitting Side Assist in a Passat B6. I'll translate the first blue info box for you:

"If you wish to install Side Assist in your Passat B6, you must first install both a B7 Gateway and a B7 Instrument Cluster".

Uwe,

Thank you for the translation! I was able to translate the entire site using google translate: http://translate.googleusercontent....ssist/&usg=ALkJrhit8fe7RZTghZROJ1uK9a6v9bfy8w

I don't know if these parts are correct, but they may fit into an mk6?

The gateway I believe fits according to the description http://m.aliexpress.com/item/2037530616.html?tracelog=storedetail2mobilesitedetail

The cluster: http://m.aliexpress.com/promotion/instrument-cluster-needles.html?tracelog=wssearch2mobilesearch

If these are correct (I am not sure they are) it looks like this install would be expensive to retro... $500 for the sensors, $40 for the gateway, and $500 for the cluster...

Just so you don't wait for further feedback from me: I have no knowledge whether those parts are correct or would work.

Well there are certainly a couple of examples of the ''7N0 907 530 AN" CAN Gateway having been fitted to a Mk6 Golf and successfully coded / working so it looks like that is at least compatible. The associated instrument cluster that is needed however is a different ball game as there seem to be a minefield of different part numbers available. I guess you would need a compatible Golf Mk6 cluster unless you know that one from a Passat B7 would physically fit but looking at some pictures though they appear to be different.

Also keep in mind that the immobiliser is in the instrument cluster so if you were to get another cluster, you would also need to deal with coding the immobiliser in the new cluster. I believe the Mk6 Golf has a 5th Generation immobiliser which isn't supported by VCDS.

Passat Cluster won't fit, Immobilser is built into your cluster and not in Passat Cluster.
Your cluster or a newer version might be ok, but you will have to fit the kit to find out.

Also mirrors are different between Passat and Golf 6

Side assist will never apear in Golf / Eos, Tiguan/ Touran cluster menu so you will not be able to Enable / Disable that.
Only Passat cluster can handle it.
ALso - brand new parts are not calibrate. Read about calibration 1st

But Passat cluster doesn't have immobiliser.
Or is there way to activate it in there, or also missing hardware inside cluster for pickup coil?

According to Eddie-NL, a Passat B7 cluster won't fit a Golf Mk6 anyway so the lack of an immobiliser in the Passat cluster is going to be pretty much irrelevant.

And with no functionality in the Golf Mk6 clusters to handle side assist capabilities it looks to me like it's probably game over unfortunately.

Yes the outside casing is different, but according to another forum the internal PCB is same.

Good point. Not game over then (yet). Just a bit more work involved to swap the Passat cluster electronics into the Golf cluster casing before it could be tried out.

It would be certainly be interesting to see if the Passat B7 cluster internals are compatible with the Golf Mk6.

it is not only the shape

Immobiliser is not in cluster, so car ecu won't start as it doesn't receive ok to start

Passat has electronic steering lock and has electric handbrake, cluster won't be happy without signal from these

it is not only the shape

Immobiliser is not in cluster, so car ecu won't start as it doesn't receive ok to start

Passat has electronic steering lock and has electric handbrake, cluster won't be happy without signal from these
I did put a passat cluster in my golf today for "testing purposes". It didn't have any active codes in cluster itself, but it did show a ABS/ESP warning on dash, i guess it's because passat ABS is 3C0 and golf is 1K0.
Yes the immobilizer, but maybe some way to enable it? I know it's a long shot, but when i did have passat cluster in my car i was able to have the lighning and convience menu, what we don't have with mk6 cluster.

I've done this a retrofit seat leon, which not has as option the side assist, i have adapted the Audi A3. My main problem is that modules LED lights do not fit into the mirror, I had to adapt on the pillars inside . my other downside is that the cluster LED alarm is not operating, I guess it's because the EEPROM is not designed for my car this option, despite having the LED indicator on the cluster but not activated. I active on and deactive from the FIS.
