That is normal, until you drive some time (normal 500 km).

By doing the manual service reset, using the menu option, you have reset again and system is changed to "Fixed service".

Yes, but what I'm not sure about is where the following adaptation values came from (i.e. what set them):-

  • ESI: oil quality-> poor oil quality
  • (6)-ESI: Coding of Service Interval Extension (SIE)-Oil quality -> poor oil quality
  • maximum value of distance to service -> 15000 km
  • maximum value of time to service -> 372 d

I haven't changed any of those values myself through VCDS. When a manual service reset is done via the MFD/MFA, does it also reset those 4 values to the values shown above? So could those 4 values have been something different before I actually did a manual service reset via the MFD/MFA?

When I've had mine dealer serviced from new it always shows poor oil quality. When I serviced mine last year it still show poor oil quality even though I using the recommended oil from my dealer.

It's dark here now so it will probably be at least tomorrow before I try that. I'll take a new copy of the map setting before I change anything so in the worst case I can just set values back to what they were again. I'll report back once I've tried your suggestion.

When this has happened, was your car put on a flexible service schedule by the dealer?

You don't happen to have a log of all your instrument control map parameter values after a dealer service do you? I would very much like to know what values are actually present for the following adaptation parameters immediately after a dealer has set a car to a flexible service schedule:-

  • maximum value of distance to service
  • maximum value of time to service

It looks like a manual service reset via the MFD/MFA either changes these parameter values dynamically and sets them back to 372 days / 15,000 km (assuming they were previously set to some larger values when the car was in a flexible service schedule), or those parameter values always just remain static at 372 days / 15,000 km and are only ever referenced and used if the car is in set to a fixed service schedule (i.e. so in a flexible service schedule mode those values may just be ignored and the data from the TOG sensor used to determine the days / km values to the next service schedule instead).

If someone has a log of those values immediately after a service reset has been done for a flexible service schedule with a dealer VAS machine then we would know for sure.

Uwe - You were correct :D

I changed the "(6)-ESI: Coding of Service Interval Extension (SIE)-Oil quality" adaptation parameter value to "good oil quality" and I now have the dashes / hyphen status of "Service in --- mi or --- days." in my MFD/MFA service interval display so it looks like I am back to a flexible long life service schedule again. I guess the TOG sensor will now start to do its work by analysing the oil and I should then see some real values displayed in ~300 miles or so.

Thanks Gary! I was looking at those SIA values in my Tiggy map compared to your ESI values but I wasn't real sure about the oil quality. I added this to the Special Notes on that Golf based cluster page.

Just reporting back to say that this issue is now fully concluded.

Today the service status in my MFD started displaying real longlife service schedule figures again which is roughly ~350 miles since the dealer did the original service reset (before I screwed the service interval up). So I'm now happy that the longlife service reset fix done with VCDS has proved to have worked successfully :)

I have a doubt to clear on this topic.
My car has the appropriate QG1 code on the build sheet, but the dealer set it to a fixed 8000km/9 month interval for service.

When I change the "Oil quality" adaptation channel I can verify in the MMI that the oil change interval changes to 30000km (minus covered distance). The inspection interval is not updated. Is that because the "FIX" maximum distance is at 8000km? How long are the oil service intervals on these things? 30 thousand km is too much for my peace of mind.

It would be useful if you posted a complete log of the adaptation map for your instrument cluster so we can see what all the current settings are for your car.

Ironically, since I went through all this a year ago I've had a change of mind. Coincidentally my car is in for its service today and I've asked them to switch the car onto a fixed service interval.

Sorry to bring this back from the dead.
After my last fixed service at 16000km I set my car to "Good oil quality" and a maximum of 15000km of service life. Right now the car is only subtracting the covered distance from the time remaining to inspection.
Is this because I set too short of a service interval on my car? Or am I somehow still running a fixed interval?

Duly noted - it still is just subtracting the covered distance from 15000 km for both indicators.

How do I get a flexible oil change service programmed in there then? is 15000km too short of a distance? Should I try with a longer service interval?
