Retrofitting LED headlights to 2019 SportWagen S 4motion

Hello all,

First time poster, long-time TDI VAG-COM user. I suspect this question has already been asked, but I couldn't find an answer. So I have a base-model Golf SportWagen 4motion, and I'm trying to fit adaptive LED headlights. I know I would obviously need to fit the headlights themselves, and also the rear level sensor. Do we know what other items I might need to make this work? I found the sensor and the cabling here, but it's for a mk7, not a mk7.5 like I have, so I'm not sure it's identical:

Can anyone provide me with some guidance of where to go from here? Someone (I didn't get permission to use her name) at Ross-tech was so helpful today, and she explained that I might run into some problems with component protection, do folks know if I'll need to get specially programmed modules to avoid that problem?

I suspect the leveling module may be different for a 2018+ US car.

This kit you linked is not for your vehicle as Mk7.5 uses a different module for this.

Hah! Yeah, I figured that was OK... So the sensor is I think the same, and the wiring as well, right? I figured the module was either different, or incorporated in the new BCM...

I dont know exactly what is required for your sportwagon but here are some general notes I'm aware of.

7 years ago I retrofitted OEM bi-xenon headlights onto my VW CC. The system contained

Rear level sender
Front level sender(only if car was 4motion V6)
Headlight Control Module
Actual headlights with modules
Cables + Connectors

I'm also playing with an idea to retrofit LED adaptive headlights on my wife's 2019 MQB Tiguan which should be similar setup as your sportwagen.
VW did not really change their setup

Two headlights with control modules
Headlight module
Level Sender
Connectors and wires

As far as I know the headlight module should not be on the Component Protection list. But, it is the best to obtain a used module instead of a brand new module. As far as I know VCDS is not able to provision new modules, so to keep it simple try to find used module. VCDS should be able to change coding and change adaptations if needed.

Compare auto-scan from a sportwagen which came with LED headlights. Plus obtain modules adaptations
Buy one day subscription to erwin https://erwin.vw.com/erwin/showHome.do and download all wiring for the sportwagen
Play "whats the difference" game between auto-scans, adaptations and wiring for few days

Sorry not exactly the info you are looking for but I at least it points you in a good direction.

PS: Also make sure your other modules are compatible. Years ago VW used to install same modules to all trim levels so retrofits were much easier. However they have lot more module variants on the MQB platform which are limited to certain features.

Thanks OEM Plus. I was wondering about the BCMs being shared between vehicles. It seems like maybe the suffix shows the difference between trim levels? Mine is a "BA" suffix, and I'm not sure if that's the same across models or if it's a low-line unit. The CANBUS gateway says MQB-HIGH, so I'm assuming that's the same among the models. I suppose what I really need is someone with a 2019 SportWagen SE (which came with the lights) to do a scan. Maybe I'll see if anyone on Vortex has one? Our local dealer doesn't have any SE trim models, it's all Tiguans now, so I don't think I can ask them. As far as I can tell, seems like folks are saying for mk7, there's only rear level sensors. I think you're absolutely right about the used vs new question, but I think the headlights themselves can be new, or perhaps since they have modules built in they have to be used as well?

People on vortex are usually helpful in providing auto-scans. If you can get auto-scan from sportwagen along with adaptation maps that would be the best.

I'm not sure if headlights need to be used or not. I always just had used headlights because they are the cheapest, got off wrecked vehicles. Brand new headlights from VW are ridiculously expense.

Looks like the BCM is identical between a sportwagen S and an Alltrack SEL with lights. The ECU and CANBUS gateway are different, and there's another module which looks like the AFS leveling controller module, which reads the sensor on the rear shock. So here's the question, do I need to replace the ECU, or since the BCM module is the same, then the modules are basically plug and play?

I doubt the ECU matters to this.

My guess is you need to add the (J745) and do some tweaking in the BCM. Get an Adaptation map from a BCM from a car that came from the factory with the lights you're trying to retrofit.

As we discussed, my current 2018 Alltrack S is poorly equipped but a scan from Eric and Yanping's 2019 Alltrack SE with LED headlights can be found here:

I don't believe maps from that vehicle are posted in a public location so feel free to bump this back up if you aren't able to obtain maps from the other person.

So the parts list is coming together. Seems like I need the below items to make this work. Now here's a question. Do the halogen lights and the LEDs use the same plug and number of pins, or do I need to make an adaptor to make the pins work?
