Jef, I have done the calibration to no effect. Interestingly enough the ABS code was not "zeroed out" as it seems is a common brain fart for these devices. The proper coding was in place but I went ahead and did the coding and attempted the calibration anyway. I was not successful in my attempt. The steering wheel sensor did not give me the expected readings when looking at measuring block 005 - instead of seeing the axis rotate 90 degrees it stayed pretty much at 0.0 (though I did see a likely erroneous fluctuation to 2.5 degrees). I took a picture of my steering wheel turned 90 degrees left with my PC next to it showing meas block 005 displaying 0.0 degrees but can't work out how to post it here. I can deduce from this I have another problem but there does not seem to be a conclusive consensus on what that may be by glancing through the various forums. So, I'm going back to the well for another much needed drink of knowledge. What say you?

Didn't have a chance to see if the controller answers up as a fast moving midwest thunderstorm moved in and unleashed a torrent. So, where would you go from here? Latest scan is below:

He means you picked the wrong chassis type (8D vs. 8E) before you started the scan. Since this car is not highly optioned, it doesn't look like VCDS skipped any modules because of it.

NP just thought you would of knew what I was making reference too, remember this is not a new user section, so I usually am thinking guys here have some experience and is why I break stones to a degree.
The WD should be observed and wiggle tests done with load light for G85 before condemned, maybe even overlay of tracks.

Test overlay is where you make up your own sets of wires to isolate the harness from module to sensor for tracks using a WD, no?
Understood, thanks. Yes, I'm using the erwin supplied WD. In going through some troubleshooting steps this afternoon I was manipulating wires going to G85 (started inside the car and worked my way out) with no observed affect on ABS communications or meas block values for the steering sensor. When I started fiddling with J104 on the ABS controller I immediately lost comms with the ABS controller. In manipulating the harness I was able to consistently affect the communications between the ABS controller and VCDS. No affect on the meas blocks though. I then took the connector cover off J104 and wiggled wires in their while observing the computer. At one point with the connector cover off I had a condition where ABS comms were lost but the G85 sensor errors had cleared (I'm guessing no comms means it couldn't read that sensor?) and no other faults existed anywhere else except for my pre-existing license plate light fault. It is worth noting that I have the original BCM installed at this time which I had done just to see if there was any possible correlation with the errors I had seen on it initially. It comes up exactly the same as the replacement. Calling it a day I buttoned the cover up on J104, put a zip tie back on it and I was right back where I had started the day - G85 faults. Latest scan is below, original BCM installed but otherwise not much new.
So I guess the question is: Wiring harness, connector or ABS controller? The "track overlay" idea sounds quite compelling to me but not sure if that's something I'm equipped to do.

Post the WD and let's have a look together?
If this is all you have, do the figure 8, down the road, figure 8 test drive. Often times it will clear out with that. If not, then as per Jack, you will need to dig into the wiring.

Did anyone think this might be ignition switch related? 
Thanks gents, I will have time to do the figure-8 this evening and then if necessary post the WD per Jack (have to figure out how to post pics first...). Jack, nobody has suggested ignition switch yet. How would I test/confirm that?
