I have personal problem (hard to live with) concerning the minimal engine braking (speed decrease) when lifting my foot off the accelerator. It's a 2018 Arteon 2.0L 190 Tsi DSG-7.
Whether in Normal or Sports mode the deceleration is nil on the level ineffective on downwards slopes. Decending a steep hill, the brakes will cause engine braking to cut in, but not consistantly when decending the same hill repeatedly.
In Tiptronic mode, whether dropping just one, two gears or even three gears has little effect also. At 5000 rpm in 2nd gear there is still no improvement - just engine noise! The dealer says the vehicle is all OK.

Is there anyway to use VCDS to modify the engine/gearbox/torque retardation effectiveness when taking foot off the gas?
My first thought is the Tilt sensing feature which does seem to have effect on steep hills. This system recognises me applying the brake pressure on a steep hill somehow. Then when I take foot of brake, I can feel the car is then being held back and assume it is doing so via torque control rather than doing so by applying my brakes automatically.

In all drive modes, the engine braking effect is negligable, except for ECO Mode, when management engages neutral and the car rolls on forever.
The effect is no different in Auto, TipTronic mode & or paddles, and left stick manual paddles only mode.

I don't see anything in the documented channels or coding bits that would influence "compression braking".

Engine has four fault codes, but the ones that might be relevant are all "Intermittent - Not Confirmed" and haven't been reported to the Gateway.

However, the fault in the Transmission, U0287 is "Confirmed", not flagged Intermittent, and reported to the Gateway. I wonder whether this has any effect on what you're experiencing?

Have you tried clearing fault codes to see if that changes anything?

I did not think this was worthy of attention considering the date (2018.12) and location of the vehicle (Parked position, 0 mph, 0 rpm).
Probably a conflict of shutdown processes at a time when the vehicle is normally in my garage..

Does this now draw a blank on engine compression braking issues?

What's annoying is that your TCU isn't giving a Fault Frequency with that code, so we don't know how often it has occurred since the freeze frame data was written on the first occurrence. But since it's not flagged "Intermittent", it seems to me that it likely occurs regularly.

Sometimes the presence of fault codes has strange effects. Like I said, I suggest clearing it to see what happens.

Other than that, I don't have any ideas, but I don't claim to know everything.

I cleared the code, toggled the ignition on and off, rescanned a couole of times with engine off and at tickover.

Well since it comes right back with the current date, I'd say that's definitely a problem.

But I do not know whether it's related to your lack of compression braking.

As for the module and fluid temperatures, I'm not surprised they're close in both sets of data. I believe this is one of those transmissions that uses a "Mechatronic" module that's bolted right to the transmission itself.

I'd suggest keeping an eye on the instantaneous fuel consumption figure. When true engine braking occurs, it should read 0.0l/100km. If its some other non-zero figure and your foot is off the gas pedal, then the engine/gearbox are just coasting. I remember RoW Passat B7 with the ubiquitous 2.0 TDI CR engine (CFFB, CFGB, CFGC) with the DQ250 DSG had coasting as an option one could enable in the MFA.

I will take a look at that on next run.
The Arteon has three drive modes selectable via MODE switch and Infotainment panel. Normal and Sports Mode are much the same, except gearbox mapping in Sports mode drops 2 gears compared with the gear used in Normal Mode. Engine compression braking effect seems the same in both these modes.

The third mode 'ECO' introduces Coasting. When the foot comes off the gas the gearbox is put into Neutral and in the UK version the engine continues to tick over. Without the gear train Coasting enables the car to roll, and save more fuel that (say) 7th gear - which would be the off-gas gear in Normal mode.
After 7000 miles I don't use ECO mode anymore, even though I enjoyed seeing the 'average since-start' MPG creep upwards during Coasting. In the other modes MPG is quite good on a run.

I will report back on the instantaneous MPG's

I had the diesel B7 36535Y CFFB TDi & NJK DSG 6 which I part exchanged for this Arteon. Sad to say, that vehicle had superb engine braking and cornering.

I could only find the mpg gauge. Whenever I take foot of gas it hits the limit of the sweep = infinit miles / gallon. I guess EU6 emission targets result in zero engine braking and I have to live with it.
