It’s a long one but informative:
If you read between the lines of what he says, you might conclude that the ZF 8HP and its derivatives are the best / most reliable modern automatics available, at least in stock form, for longitudinal applications. Of course cost and availability of repair parts might be a different story.

Which is most likely why they are found in everything from muscle cars to bimmers to Audis to yotas, etc....
Which "yota"? I'm a bit surprised by that since my understanding is that Aisin, a member of the Toyota Group of companies, makes directly competing products.
ETA: Some digging indicates Tundra, Sequoia, and Supra, as well as some Lexi... Like I said, I find this surprising.

ZF has pretty much taken over all the higher end stuff with OEMs from what I know.... it's been happening over the last decade or so.
Well, then I guess our T'regs aren't high-end, 'cause they have Aisin 8 speeds.

That's because she knows what she's talking about.... most of the previously mentioned haters are usually driving 2 or 3 year old modern vehicles that are missing a lot of the basic features (as if they sell $70k vehicles that don't have auto up\down windows all around, etc) my POS has.
Right from the SSP for my 2019 A7 (SSP 990593, page 24):
"For engines developing more than 369 lb ft (500 Nm) of torque, the 8-speed automatic transmission 0D5 is installed in conjunction with a self-locking center differential."
Audi still uses the ZF 8-speed in their sportier, higher-end models.

I almost owned one.
We were doing the AAPEX show in Vegas in 2008 and borrowed (rented?) some new Audi from the local dealer for our booth; I think it was a TT. When we returned it, I was drooling over the R8 in the showroom and asked, "How much?". Well, the dealer wanted ~$50k above MSRP for it. I shook my head and said, "Too rich for my blood". So the salesman pointed at another car in the showroom, a D3 S8 in midnight blue and said, "We can give you a good deal on that one." And indeed, he offered a substantial discount.
I turned to @Sebastian and asked, "Hey, you wanna drive back to PA instead of flying? We could get there pretty fast in this car!"
He rolled his eyes and shook his head. So we flew back.
