Speaking of that track... did you see Romain Grosjean's horrific wreck there the other week? Holy cow. We can definitively say the halo saved his life.

Not even sure I should link to a video. It's pretty graphic.

The effort is doomed to fail
I agree, it is, BUT: There are House members from districts that would surely get primaried out in 2022 if they don't do this.

Jack: I'm not familiar with your country's rules for a joint meeting of both houses - but is there anything that compels the Democrats to participate in this charade? At the extreme - what happens if only one house member, or senator from the Democrats attends for the sole purpose of objecting and then he/she leaves the proceedings?

It's all bullshit to sell media swords for advertising dollar's, as the government has become the new dysfunctional reality show of idiocracy!

Have a look here:

Bottom line: If at least one Senator and one House member objects to any State's EC vote, this forces a vote by each house on that Electoral slate. Now there is practically no doubt in my mind how those votes will turn out (they will accept the "certified" results), but forcing such a vote is likely to reveal an interesting divide in the Republican party.

- but is there anything that compels the Democrats to participate in this charade?
Why do you call it a "charade"? Read the history of how this developed in the article above. It's a lawfully codified means to resolve disputes. Of course in most Presidential elections, there is not dispute and it's just ceremonial, but there are good reasons for the process to exist.

Democrats would be foolish not to participate. If they refused, then only Republicans would get to vote on any objections, which would make it entirely possible that the objections would be sustained, the alternate slates of electors accepted, resulting in Trump getting a second term.

At the extreme - what happens if only one house member, or senator from the Democrats attends for the sole purpose of objecting and then he/she leaves the proceedings?
Do you have the parties confused? Democrats are not going to object. Their candidate has more than enough "certified" Electoral votes.
