Hi.

My 2010 Audi A3 1.6 Cr Tdi has the Dpf warning light showing on my dash, and has since gone into limp mode.
I have read the WIKI page for Dpf regeneration for my model and got all the prerequisites to start a 'service regeneration of the particle filter' in 04 basic settings.
When I press [Go!] it comes up with 'FINISHED CORRECTLY - NO DISPLAY'.

The Ash volume is showing as 35.6g and Soot Mass as 24.9g in SHOW MEASURED DATA.

Is my only option to ' Emergency Regeneration whilst Driving' in Adaptation ?? and will it be safe with these values ??

Hello
P2458 - Diesel particulate filter, Regeneration Duration

Diesel Particulate Filter will not be regenerated within a specified time
Possible causes:
- DPF ash charge too high
- Check exhaust gas temperature sensors, faulty measured values, for plausibility
- Engine trouble that prevents a high exhaust gas temperature, for example, sufficient air supply for regeneration
- Faulty measured values of the differential pressure sensor

Hi Wolfgang, thanks for the reply info.

Maybe I should give a background history of the car.
I have owned it since 2014 with 25,000 miles.
Until approx 6 months ago it was used nearly every day on a 50 mile round trip and only twice in that time did the DPF light come on.
Both times I took the car for a blast on a motorway and the fault always cleared.
Recently I have only used the car on short 5 minute journeys to work and back, which I know is BAD for a DPF as the regeneration cycle will always be interrupted, which has probably why I have error P2458
When the DPF light came on this time, the limp mode came on before I could get to a motorway to activate a regeneration.
I,m sure it just needs to go through a regen cycle, but just to make sure, what are the typical values I would see for exhaust gas temperatures and differential pressure sensor if they are working correctly ?

It's a bit ironic, as I work for a company that specializes in diesel emissions in the commercial sector :banghead:

Thanks,

Chris

Is my only option to ' Emergency Regeneration whilst Driving' in Adaptation ?? and will it be safe with these values ??
If it were mine, I would certainly try it.

But first, I would double-check the differential pressure sensor. Check values with key on, engine not running, and at idle.

Hi Uwe. Thank you for your input.

The values I get for DPF Differential Pressures are-

0.04 hPa ( key on / engine not running )

4.5 hPa ( engine at idle - 750rpm )

Do the values look ok?

Thanks,

Chris.

Why the hell can't VAG stick with one unit? Had to look up hectopascals. OK, they're the same as millibars. Yes, those seem reasonably OK.

OK.

So I have put the car into the ' regeneration whilst driving ' via adaptions, and taken it for a 30 minute run each way on the motorway sticking to the driving prerequisites.

It must have gone into regeneration mode as I had full power whilst doing the runs.

The DPF warning light is still on and is back in limp mode when I finished the run.

I monitored the exhaust temps, and soot values.

The temp values were around 250 - 300 during the run and up to 450 - 500 on hard acceleration . I would expect to see higher temps than this during a regeneration ?
The soot value has now gone from 25g before the run, up to 28g after the run.

I did another autoscan when I finished the motorway run and still have the same error code P2458.

Then I selected function 15 ( Readiness , and the box for Oxygen Sensors is marked as FAILED OR INCOMPLETE.

Could this be a faulty O2 sensor issue causing the error ?

Hi Chris,

This may be your EGR playing up its very common on the 1.6 CR TDI

If youve had the EA189 recall done the whole emission system is covered by VW under warranty for 2 years after the recall has been done, a faulty EGR gives faulty 02 sensor readings and this may be the root of your issue

Hi Ian.

The EGR failed 2 years before the EA189 recall, so had the EGR delete of the ecu. It was the quickest and easiest option at the time, as I was working away and it was the wifes only transport.

I have opted not to have the recall performed as I was told it would include a software update of the ecu and would remove the EGR delete, and would either need another EGR delete or fitting a new EGR valve .

So, I cannot see the EGR being the problem.

I understand the O2 sensor is mainly used for maintaining the correct fuel to air ratio mixture, if it is faulty, it could be running too lean / rich and so not getting the correct exhaust temperatures to start a regeneration ??

Does the DPF regeneration use readings from the O2 sensor?

Thanks, Chris.

Hi Chris,

My old 2010 caddy had the same EGR issue as you did and I did the very same thing having my tuner map out the EGR

What we noticed was that the van regenerated far more often and I was warned it would shorten the life of the DPF

Thee are 2 02 sensors either side of the DPF plus the lines for the pressure sensors, check the lines for the pressure sensors first as a leak will cause this issue and then check the data from both sensors

The only good thing it’s that the top o2 sensor is easily removed and you can get a DPF cleaning solution in there as it could just be completely clogged and finally it could be a faulty DPF pressure sensor

02 sensors are about £10;secondhand on eBay as are DPF pressure sensors if you wanted to do a process of elimination

Thanks

Ian

Hi Ian.

I already have a genuine pressure sensor on order from TPS, as this seems to be the commonest fault.

I will check the hoses / pipework to the pressure sensor for any damage or leaks and wiring to the other sensors first.

From my understanding there is only 1 O2 sensor ??, and 2 exhaust temp sensors ( 1 before and 1 after the DPF ), and 1 differential pressure sensor.

Chris.

Consider hose particulate filters for sensor protection if sensors are found faulty from FOD.

You may be right Chris I quickly looked at the DPF diagram and it looked like a post DPF sensor but may be a temp sensor

I’ll have a look in Elsa later to see if there is a better diagram

Hi Chris

Acording to ELSA

G505 Differential pressure sensor - says it must be adapted using diagnostics if being changed

G38 Lambda Sensor on the top of the DPF

G495 Temperature sender at the bottom

Fairly straightforward, either one of those 3 a leaky hose or the DPF is blocked

HTH

Hi Ian.
Ok, thanks for the clarification on the sensors etc.

The hoses to and from the sensor are all good, and visual inspection of the wiring to the sensors all look ok.

I have fitted and now trying to adapt the new DPF differential pressure sensor.

Using the procedure for for UDS protocol on the Wiki, after I select ADAPTATION OF DIFF PRESSURE PARTICULATE FILTER which finishes correctly, when I go back into the list, I do not get the option in the list for RESETTING OF LEARNED VALUES OF DIFF PRESSURE SENSOR.

The only options in the list for resetting learned values are -

IDE0046- Reset Oxygen sensor learned values.

IDE02147 - Resetting learned values of average quantity adaptation.

IDE02703 - Reset learned values quant meter unit and press contr valve.

The wiki page shows this for the 2.0 tdi CR engine , is there a different procedure for the 1.6 tdi CR ??

Thanks,

Chris.

Hi Ian.

Thanks for the thread info. After reading the thread, seems the info for adapting the G450 needs updating.

The wiki info is for the 2.0 CR , maybe the procedure for the 1.6 CR is different ??

I have now taken out all 3 temp sensors to bench test them at work, 1 at the turbo ( G235 ), 1 before dpf ( G495 ) and 1 after dpf ( G648 )

I will try the adaptation when I have refitted or replaced the temp sensors.

Thanks, Chris.
