2015 S3 Still Misfires after New Coil Packs, New Plugs, Carbon Cleaning. Thoughts?

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year! Back on the board with my 2015 S3, the same one that had transmission issues that you guys helped me out with, and AOA ended up replacing under goodwill.

Now I have been having misfires for the last few months. Let me list the issues // problems in proper (or as close to) JPPSG:

1. 2015 Audi S3
2. Car is modified - Unitronic Stage 2 ECU Tune and Stage 2 DSG Tune as of 60,000 miles. Aftermarket catted downpipe with O2 Sensor still in place, and cold air intake.
3. Problems started around 73,000 miles. Here's the latest scan:

So i changed the N80 valve, spark plugs and coil packs, all parts were OEM and stock to car (S3). Cleared the codes and was good to go for about 73,000 miles. With my mileage i suspected carbon buildup. I went to a reputable car repair shop (not sure if i can post their name) and they ran a diagnostic. I DID not tell them i suspected carbon buildup so as to get a "transparent" diagnosis. They said the car needed a carbon cleaning and showed me photos of what appeared to be a bat cave (probe photos via intake manifold). I went ahead with the carbon cleaning and i noticed a MUCH smoother idle and acceleration. These guys also replaced the injector gasket and the intake manifold gasket as well as replaced the water pump (had a small leak and they gave me a GREAT deal on replacing it since they were in there already).

That was about 3,000 - 4,000 miles ago and here we are with MORE misfires. The above scan is the latest.

5. Here is what i am thinking about doing: flash car back to stock. Perform a smoke test and find the cause of the EVAP leak (need to buy a decent smoke machine that won't break the bank, opinions are welcome). I was thinking it might be the PCV also? Maybe replace that?

Hello Everyone and Happy New Year! Back on the board with my 2015 S3, the same one that had transmission issues that you guys helped me out with, and AOA ended up replacing under goodwill.

Now I have been having misfires for the last few months. Let me list the issues // problems in proper (or as close to) JPPSG:

1. 2015 Audi S3
2. Car is modified - Unitronic Stage 2 ECU Tune and Stage 2 DSG Tune as of 60,000 miles. Aftermarket catted downpipe with O2 Sensor still in place, and cold air intake.
3. Problems started around 73,000 miles. Here's the latest scan:

Is sump with fuel contamination or clean?

Don't you think you should Un-modify car and observe coil packs, plugs and ignition system connectivity + HPP for leak into sump thinning oil & verify the spray pattern, injector hold or replace injectors and you don't need a smoke machine, use a mighty vac and trims in VCDS to guide the test path and isolate for false air?

Did you verify G28 isn't a dirty signal?

Is CAT plugged or part blocked?

OP can you post mode 9 data for this car in VCDS OBD2 mode in main screen please?

You mentioned a possible dirty signal from the G28? I believe that is the engine speed sensor? It shows an RPM value of around 3,000 RPM and that is exactly when the misfire occurred. I live in a warm climate and the day the CEL went on i was driving down my block and felt a hesitation as i slowly accelerated. Once the car warmed up and got to operating temperature there were ZERO issues. It appears that it is a cold start misfire issue.

Today i had to run an errand in the morning and the car felt like it misfired upon startup, but ran fine after warming up. After my errand I connected the VCDS while the car was running and logged for any potential misfires (about 5 minutes) and saw NONE.

I also want to mention the shop ran a compression test on each cylinder and everything looked good, i.e a consistent 135 PSI for cylinders 1 - 4. So it doesn't sound like weak valve springs or sticky valves, although i'm sure the shop would've mentioned that.

I have a hunch the small EVAP leak is the culprit and when i have off (Monday) i want to run some more tests and trace down the leak. Just to be sure i will also check the injectors, and the HPFP and try to troubleshoot things. I will keep you all posted and thanks again for your help so far !!

Would appear a lean burn as somewhat goes away once warm, also misses at 3,000 so pushing it a bit.

Would be curious to watch fuel pressure when this happens and what the fuel trim, is at that point?

Hello Everyone. Hope you're all safe and HEALTHY. I took my vehicle to an independent VAG specialist and at that time they stated i needed an ECU upgrade which they performed. Car ran great for a while after that.

However. I am getting cold start misfires AGAIN. Car has about 150,000 miles on it and runs / pulls like a champ. I brought my car in to the same shop and they performed another carbon clean (which i knew i needed badly since i replaced the water pump myself).

So i tried trouble shooting:

1. Car has fresh spark plugs.
2. Coil packs are about 25,000 miles old
3. Tried swapping coil packs to other cylinders, but it's still #3 misfiring
3. Checked fuel rail pressure via VCDS. Was a constant 60 bar, then i turned car off and it rose to 70+ after a minute or so.
4. Tuned car back to stock. Same issues.

The issue i am running into is checking individual injectors via VCDS. My car runs the UDS protocol and everything i saw on youtube shows CAN. When i try to use advance measuring values i get "Refused by control module" for cylinders 1, 2 and 4 but i get "this output is not supported by control module" for #3 ? I tried this with car running at idle and with just the ignition in the ON position. Any thoughts ?

I don't want to go the "change out everything until you find what's wrong" route. Would love to run some more tests to try to pin point the problem. Car always ran 93 Top Tier gas.

Just for fun i called the local Audi dealership (prior to getting a carbon cleaning) and told them i got a CEL and may need carbon cleaning. Their response was "modern cars don't need carbon cleaning, it's probably a simply fix like an spark plug but you can't do that on your own because you need special tools." I thanked him for his time then hung up ........

Did you do a compression test on Cyl 3 and compare it to the others? A leaking valve could cause a misfire.

Thanks for your quick reply. That is the next step. Waiting for my bro in law to get home, he was a BMW tech for a few years. He suspects it may be a valve gasket leak or a weak valve spring. Note though, misfire ONLY occurs during a cold start. Once the car idles it runs smooth. On the highway it runs like a beast with ZERO issues.

When i took my car in for carbon service two years ago (time flies !) they ran a compression test and everything was reading 184 PSI across all cylinders (if i recall correctly).......

You can even google "S3 cold start misfire" or "golf r cold start misfire" and see there are threads upon threads of this issue. It's crazy......

Again i'll keep you all posted.

Still waiting for the compression test kit.

In the meantime - how do i test each injector if i have the UDS protocol ? I can do the "old fashioned" oscillometer method but i rather have a more accurate reading for EACH injector so i can compare them.
