I have acquired all the OE parts for a bi-xenon headlight upgrade and the conversion looms from Kufatec. The loom is annoyingly configured for LHD vehicles (as it assumes J519 is on the left side of the car) only so I need to extend or swap some wires if I want to keep the sense of left & right correct so that an option to enable corner/kerb lighting is maintained.

I will post all the part numbers in due course, but I was looking at the coding instructions supplied by Kufatec and wanted to check a few things as there isn't a fully documented view in VCDS for long coding of J519 - Address #09 - Central Electrics Module. Snippet below...

So the first thing to check is whether this controller is suitable for xenon conversion - 4H0 907 063 BP. I was thinking of just unplugging the halogen lights and trying the long coding for xenon config to see if coding is accepted or not. Then temporarily connecting the xenon lights with the adapter loom will allow me to check most functions before diving into the spaghetti hell where J519 lives in the drivers footwell.

As for long coding, the instructions will have the following impact on #09, but I don't know if these are 100% correct for a wagon with adaptive air suspension (AAS).

Byte 00: 69 --> 26
Byte 02: 00 --> 20
Byte 04: 80 --> 88 (or 89 for corner/kerb light mode active)
Byte 06: A7 --> 9F
Byte 14: 5F --> 1D
Byte 15: 5F --> 0C
Byte 27: 40 --> 60
Byte 28: 20 --> 21

This coding is for the NON-dynamic xenon headlights - the integrated fog light can be set up as kerb light during cornering but this coding is not for the whizzy turning dynamic AFS xenons.

This seems to line up reasonably well with a xenon equipped LHD 4G that found in the VCDS forum. That had some problems which I would put down to a difference in Byte 04 (which should be 88 or 89 instead of 40). All the other bytes relevant to headlights seem to line up:

The next challenge will be with the automatic headlight levelling controller (J431) - 4H0 907 357 A - which needs to be configured in a way where it takes information about suspension level from the CAN Bus instead of being wired directly to front and rear height sensors which a mechanically sprung 4G would use to determine the height of the car.

Is J431 coding well documented I wonder ?

Quick update on this one after checking the schematics and the topology of the two Kufatec adapter looms. One is for headlight lamps, the other has the 4-wire position motor wiring from J431 which is needed to stay legal in UK for xenon lamps.

As suspected, both looms are built on basis that cables exit the cabin near J519 & J431 on left side to align with LHD cars, so a number of pin swaps have to be made to keep the correct sense of left and right when the loom is routed from J519 & J431 positions on RHD.

The main wiring loom is simple enough - there are two flying cables for xenon screen control (referred to as purple and white wires in Kufatec docs). The WHITE wire is RIGHT on RHD.

The J431 wiring is a bit more time consuming - I effected these pin swaps on the loom wires for J431 with some careful splicing after checking the wiring & pinouts twice.

17 <--> 15
19 <--> 21
16 <--> 22
18 <--> 20

Again its worth noting this is only required on RHD cars if you want the correct sense of left and right to be called out in the event of any fault codes. Being a bit fussy I wanted to do it right.

I am surprised Kufatec does not offer a RHD version of their looms, give the price at what they sell them. but I'll tell you what, the only loom I bought from them was to retrofit heated seats, and it was shorter than needed. I had to route it differently, not OEM style. again, for the price I paid, I was pretty pissed.

Yeah I was annoyed at the price too - having one in my hand now, with all the connector part numbers visible, I know that I could replicate it for a fraction of the price, but you are paying for convenience to have Hans or Franz make one for you. I cannot fault the quality with which the looms are built.

It was only after I buzzed it all out and tested the new headlight modules on the bench that I realised the sense of left and right was going to be mixed up - not a problem to get lights functioning, but potentially confusing down the line if fault codes get thrown up for the 'wrong' light. Thats why I figured it wise to swap them over.

To be honest though, the price of the Kufatec looms is only a small part of the overall cost of the xenon conversion using OE parts.

Hopefully it won't take too long to find right codes for the headlamp level controller - Kufatec instructions suggests a code for this variant of their loom on 4G vehicles with AAS so we will see if that is correct when I get round to that part.

I had the xenon lights before i fitted the full led ones. My J519 was the BN version which supersedes to the BP version which you have so will work fine.

Thats great info morski - many thanks for that, but does your car have adjustable air suspension (AAS) ?

I had a look at the car earlier today in the hope of being able to unplug the connector from the halogen lamps and quickly test out the J519 coding with the xenon lights connected temporarily but I cannot even get a finger on the stupid plug locations for the lights so they need to be removed for access to the connector, which is a bumper removal job (as you will know).

At the moment no. Its standard steel shocks etc. So it uses the 2 level sensors for reference. Im now fitting air suspension which uses 4 level sensors which are different to the 2 already fitted. So the headlight levelling is done in conjunction with air suspension from the same sensors.

@morski - I have everything I need here in terms of parts for the xenon conversion and tested everything on the bench. I am less worried about testing out the controller coding with your information that an older J519 than mine works with the xenon bulbs so I just need to get on with bumper removal when I am in the right mood for the lamp swap. Seems like you have retro-fitted almost every option onto your BiTDi which must have cost you a small fortune - I do like those wagons. I do wish our C7 allroad had the comfort seats with memory function - the base seats are nothing like as supportive or comfy as the electric Recaros in our old C5 allroad.

So taking these one byte at a time:

Byte 00 - seems to check out ok

Byte 02 - I didn't document all options for bits 0 & 1 yet.

Byte 04 - Bit zero references that option as 8EX/8EY but this seems relevant for 8BP (bi-xenon) as well. Bit three is in the same category. I also don't understand why bit 7 seemingly associates foglight function with 8Q3 (AAS) function.

Byte 06 - Had I taken the Kufatec codes at face value this would have disabled coming/leaving home light functions. Also not sure what the "Assistenzfahrlicht" is referenced in bit 0 - translation to 'assistance running light' is not clear for me.

Byte 14 - Seems ok

Byte 15 - Is my translation correct here - is this dimming/clamping the bulb voltage to nominal 12V ? Surely the conventional/halogen lights would burn brighter with that feature turned off with a running engine that produces something closer to 14V, or maybe I am over-thinking that !

Byte 27 - Bit 5 is undocumented in German as well, so this does not align with Kufatec.

Byte 28 - Bit 0 is yet another fog-light / all-weather lamp item and it seems like that is relevant for 8BP xenons. For Bit 5, I assume the 'AFS' function is referencing the way that lights are turned on/off automatically with light sensor - this is nothing to do with whizzy adaptive lights for going round corners.

Byte 15 - Is my translation correct here - is this dimming/clamping the bulb voltage to nominal 12V ? Surely the conventional/halogen lights would burn brighter with that feature turned off with a running engine that produces something closer to 14V, or maybe I am over-thinking that !

I will have finished the translation of the German V1 info into English by the end of this week, but meantime I did have a play with Byte 15 and the halogen lamps. They do indeed get noticeably brighter when you disable these 'dimming' bits. Amazingly simple improvement when you know how - I suppose the only benefit of the dimming feature is longer bulb life but its good to confirm this stuff for the greater good !

Thanks for the research into this, as a halogen bulb user I would love to know if they are dimmed and if that could be turned off to get the brighter light without any other issues. My biggest regret was not speccing xenon lights!

There is noticeably more light when you disable the dimming bits on the halogen bulbs. Had no problems after selecting that option.

I also upgraded the OE bulbs to proper (made in Germany) OSRAM night-breaker items which make things noticeably better. These are just stop-gap measures for doing the XENON upgrade of course (which is on my to-do list for February).

So - finally an update. Installed the Kufatec looms and Hella OE bi-xenons with the LED DRLs yesterday and all happily working. Its not a trivial job (bumper off to get to headlight fixings) for sure, but the hard yards are done. Here is a summary of the CODING at ADDRESS 09.

BYTE 00 = 0x26
BYTE 02 = 0x20
BYTE 04 = 0x88
BYTE 14 = 0x1D
BYTE 15 = 0x0C
BYTE 28 = 0x21

A few notes - This C7 allroad is RHD (UK) model. The two looms from Kufatec assumes LHD so you have to swap the pins for the height levelling at the multi-pin connector. This is because the looms are designed to exit the A-pillar fusebox on the left/driver side of LHD vehicle. For RHD, you install from the right/driver side and so the short loom cables are for the RIGHT side.

One voyage of discovery along the way was that after disconnecting the battery (in the boot/trunk under the spare wheel) - you need a battery charger at the engine bay terminals to allow the tailgate to be opened - that had me scratching my head for a moment wondering how to get to the battery again !

Kufatec instructions said to code BYTE06 as 0x9F but that conflicts with my coming/leaving home settings so I left that alone. Kufatec also said to set bit 5 on BYTE27 (which is undocumented on VCDS 18.9) - I left that clear and everything worked. I did try setting it later and the fog-light operation stopped so I cleared that bit again - my advice is to not touch BYTE27.

Thanks to Dana for posting a helpful English label file some months back after I translated a bunch of German stuff. I got there eventually.

The most challenging part is running the cables from the wheel arch at the A-pillar into the fusebox. I found a length of ethernet cable was a great cable runner once I had nicked a hole in the A-pillar grommet and was relieved to see it appear on the cabin side. Top tip is a long enough cable so you can pull the two-wires from the power loom into the cabin and then pull the eight wires of the control loom from the cabin into the wheel arch. Its hard to explain unless you are looking at it. I can post photos later for anyone with more questions.

Talking of questions - I have one - Kufatec suggests wiring up the automatic headlight level system controller (AHLS) to CANBUS pins at a module under the rear seat which isn't something I particularly want to do given the amount of stripping to get there.

Q. Does anyone know where I can more easily connect to the correct CANBUS - it must link to J533 (hub for all the CAN busses) but I've not discovered where that is - anybody care to share some info (hoping its not the module under the seat that Kufatec shows) ?

The OE schematics refer to T46a and TV41/TV42 but again I've not found where they are on the C7 chassis. The CANBus wire colours on the schematic are orange/grey and orange/brown - which makes it the EXTENDED bus - and I don't have any of the OE equipment which connects to that with options such as side assist, AFS, night vision. The front seat belt tensioners (J854 & J855) are using it so maybe thats another place to look.
