Hi,
I got a new key to associate with my 05 Touareg. I am confused with the instructions for VCDS.

I understand there are specificities related to the car year and model. I would need to help to find the appropriate procedure.

Thanks again.

Auto-Scan please.
How did you obtain the PIN for the Immobilizer?

Before buying the VCDS, I had purchase a VAG401, from it, for the engine section, I retrieved "Immobilizer password", 4 digits code.

Here is the scan:

Start by testing that PIN code. Go to 05: Acc/Start Auth. and see if it's accepted in the function Security Access.

VWZ3Z0D7284728, this is good. A Immob serial number starting out with VWZ should be a pre Immob 4C system, so provided your PIN works you can follow the instructions on our wiki site:

For those who are playing along at home, VWX serial numbers are going to be a no go with VCDS and would need to go through the dealer network.

The Pin I have is not working. It's only 4 digits and VCDS says it should be longer.

That mean I have not other option than to go to the dealer to program the key?

Hi,
Good news is that I was able to use the pin by adding the zero before the 4 digits.

Now, I screwed everything. All my keys are reset from the system. I had to repeat the procedure 4 times because the results were not what was expected. I'd like to explain it by commenting the procedure:

-----8<-------

Immobilizer III Key Matching (Kessy)
This procedure details how to match new keys to VW/Audi/Seat/Skoda vehicles with with Immobilizer III, where the immobilizer control module is integrated in a separate immo box. See the separate instructions for models where the immobilizer control module is integrated in instrument cluster or where the immobilizer control module is part of a separate Control Module).

Contents
1 Determining IMMO-ID & VIN
2 Key Matching
Determining IMMO-ID & VIN
[Select]
[05 - Acc/Start Auth.]
[Meas. Blocks - 08]
Select Block 081.
[Go!]
The first 17-digit string is the VIN. The second 14-digit string in the Immo-ID..
[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]

Should I do anything with this information?

Key Matching
Prerequisites:
Battery voltage at least 12.0 V. We strongly recommend the use of a battery charger.

After the first try, I connected my charger.

You can match up to 8 keys.
All keys are either new or were adapted to this car (IMMO-ID) before.
I got 1 new and one that was adapted to the car before.

While adapting each key, make sure to place the other keys away from the ignition lock (reader coil). The passenger seat is an adequate place.
If all Keys are new OR the first inserted Key is new, the Ignition will NOT switch ON with this key.
Put the first Key into the ignition Lock, but do NOT switch ON the ignition.
Here, i was not sure if I had to put the new or the already adapted key. In the end, I tried both.

Press and Hold the Brake Pedal for 20 Seconds to wake up the Diagnostic Databus.
OK, but it seems there is no sign to figure if I was successful wakinge up the Diagnostic Databus.

[Select]
[05 - Acc/Start Auth.]
[Meas. Blocks - 08]
Select Block 022.
[Go!]
The value in field 3 must be 1. If value is not 1, the key is not capable of being adapted to Immobilizer.
You can check each key in this manner.
Here, Block 022 is not numbers, it's YES or NO Answers. Field tree of Block 22 is "Key Condition OK", Answer was YES

Select Block 023.
[Go!]
Make sure the shown lock times in field 1, 2, 3 and 4 are 0 (each field represents a time in minutes).
If the lock times are NOT 0:
Do NOT switch off the ignition!
Allow the car to sit for AT LEAST the number of minutes that were indicated by the fields 1-4.
[Done, Go Back]
Here, about Locking times, I found out it's not on Block 23 but on the next one, 24. In all my tests, it was always all at 0.

[Sec. Access - 16]
4-digit PIN
Enter zero followed
by the 4-digit PIN. For example, if your PIN is 1234, enter 01234.
7-digit PIN
[Do it!]
Fine :-p

[Adaptation - 10]
Enter 21 in "Channel Number".
[Read]
The "Stored Value" is the number of keys currently matched.
Enter a "new value" corresponding to the total number of keys to be matched, including any existing keys.
The old keys are automatically being cleared.
[Save]
Here, it used to be showing 3 while only 1 key remain. On my first tries, I put 2 to have my old key and new key. Last try, I entered 4 as if I was just adding one. However, after 2 tries, I tested "Read" after saving the number of keys, and it was NEVER showing the number of keys I had just saved. Is it normal?

[Done, Go Back]
[Close Controller, Go Back - 06]
Repeat the following steps until all Keys have been matched:
Switch Ignition OFF and remove Key, Steering Lock should engage.
Ignition is always already OFF, as it's said to not put to ON at first step.

Insert the next Key and switch Ignition ON.
What does it mean "Next key". Does that mean the fiorst one should be adapted at that point?

The Immobilizer Warning Light will light up for ~2 seconds, wait until it goes out.
I can't figure about any Immobilizer Warning Light that would be an picture icon. During the procedure, I get sometimes a Written message saying IMMOBILZER ACTIVATED. Now it's about the only thing I can get.

Note: The above steps after saving the adaptation, should not exceed 60 seconds withing matching 2 of the keys and having one key in the ignition should not exceed 30 seconds!
i'm not sure if it was at my 3rd or 4rth try, but once, it wrote on the screen IN LEARNING MODE or something like that. I think it was after I remove the key to put the "Next key"

I regret not to pay the damn 75$ at first to code the new key at the dealer.

It's been 12+ years since I did one of these. I remember them being very fiddly.

Should I do anything with this information?
No, since you have an apparently working PIN, it is superfluous. Back in the day, a dealer was able to provide PINs if they were so inclined.

OK, but it seems there is no sign to figure if I was successful wakinge up the Diagnostic Databus.
IIRC, the Instrument Cluster will (partially?) wake up too. But if you can communicate with 05: Acc/Start Auth, it should be good.

Yeah, I think so, because you haven't actually matched any at that point.

Ignition is always already OFF, as it's said to not put to ON at first step.
You might try turning it on.

Try matching just one key (or the other).

If still no joy, please show us exactly what you have in MVBs 22, 23, and 24 with each key. You can pull up all three of these at the same time and just click [Add to Log] (or grab a screen-shot).

Try a "Battery Hay-SOOS", simply disconnect the battery cables and touch them together for about 20 seconds, then secure back the battery. Then connect a battery charger. Now try to adapt just 1 key, the original, and see how it does.

No success.
Here is my logs; It's new key followed by old key.
I don't see anything obviously wrong in that data.

Old key has lock bit set -- but this is expected since it was matched to this car.

New key does not have lock bit set, indicating it has never been matched to a car. That's good; it means it can be matched to this car.

I am a bit puzzled why you have "No ECM responding" on the new key, but "Yes" on the old key. Also "No Authentication OK" on the new one and "Yes" on the old one.

But even if there's something wrong with the new one, it should be possible to match the old one again.

Define failure here. No working keys, or only one, or...?

It's normal for you to have three keys listed from factory. It probably came with two regular keys and a valet key, whether or not you received them.

If you're still having trouble this weekend, I'll go retry it on my Phaeton and take video. The procedure will be identical. I remember there was some very minor divergence from what's in Wiki, but nothing big, and nothing that should cause you that much heartache.

I just spent another hour on it. Shorting battery cable etc.

No success. At one point, the radio started to work on is own lol.

Is it possible that I do something wrong. Maybe I just do not understand how to handle the key?

Short version of the procedure I do;

1. insert key
2. push brake
3. Enter Security Code
4. Adaptatino to number of key
5. Remove the key.

If I do it with only 1 key, after making the adaptation to 1 save and close the module, the key is supposed to be OK right there?

Yeah huh? So where did you dig up this procedure for key process, because wiki doesn't say delete all keys?

Canadians......... :p

Better call and check your MAC/CP and TP + PIN

Old keys are already locked and should be married first, in some cases only all new keys will be permitted married by Kessy or all old keys in total from a cleared point of all keys & if all keys were erased with the OEM procedure you might need all new keys!

If you sent me Kessy and all keys with valid credentials I can upload them all to the Kessy and Engine ecu making old and new keys ready.
