I found a bargain for an almost new frameless interior mirror with auto-dimming and HBA support. I could not help but starting another retrofit project.

Now I have a simple auto-dimming mirror, so the wiring needs to be slightly modified. The current mirror uses four wires: switched +12V, GND, reverse signal and roof light signal.

The new mirror, part number 3G0 857 511 AE, has 7 populated positions into the 8pin connector. I know that four wires are: +12V, GND and Extended CAN.
(reverse signal is read from CAN, no need for wire).

What are the other 3 pins for? Does anybody have a WD for the mirror, from any MQB car? I downloaded Golf 2018 WDs from erwin but High Beam Assist (PR Code 8G1) is documented only with the bigger camera on the windshield, the camera used for other traffic-assist features.

the mirror does basic HBA and will show up at address 20 into the Gateway install list. also, since it is now a module on the network, shouldn't it be powered by permanent +12V instead of switched?

apologies, I found the WD by looking harder into what I got from erwin lol.

it's five wires: +12V (switched, this is confirmed), GND, Extended CAN and the wire from the roof light.

I'll report back after I pull the CAN twisted pair. I need a leap of faith cause I already put A-Pillars back with their nasty clips. goddamnit.

BTW the feature is called MBA Main Beam Assist into the WD.

I installed the mirror today. boy, I hate those A-pillar clips. it took me longer to remove the A-pillar than to pull the pair and terminate it.

the mirror came with all the coding bits at 0. with the experimental coding I was able to set BYTE 0 and 1 to 01, which mean halogen low and high beams.

I don't know how to set BYTE 3, which is apparently the car type; regular coding does not include Golf 7 and experimental coding is... in german.

I don't know how to change all remaining bytes but I doubt they all stay at zero.

I enabled what's needed in the BCM and got the menu in the radio, and I get the high beam symbol with the "A" (AUTO) when pushing the lights stalk. however, on a small test drive high beams never auto-engaged.

does anybody have further info, or a more complete coding label for the mirror?

here is actual scan. ignore the error on the gateway.

however, on a small test drive high beams never auto-engaged.
Did you go fast enough for the HBA to engage? Check the speed settings in the adaptation channels of the #20 module.

it works, although I don't fully understand the assistant's logic.

it appears like it has to be completely dark, I mean not even street illumination. for who has the module A5 camera there are two light-intensity adaptations to be tweaked that I do not find in the list of my module 20.

guess it is what it is.

there are some examples of cars with HBA by module 20 but they use the older mirror (with frame) and it has different HW/SW and coding lenght...

it works, although I don't fully understand the assistant's logic.

it appears like it has to be completely dark, I mean not even street illumination. for who has the module A5 camera there are two light-intensity adaptations to be tweaked that I do not find in the list of my module 20.

guess it is what it is.
Your guess is correct. HBA is a function to be used on extra-urban roads, which are unlit by street lights. No reason to use the main beams if the road is already lit up. Even A5 doesn't switch to main beams when driving on an unlit road if there are visible street lights far away, which actually is a hindrance.

a couple of days ago I drove one hour on the highway. I ended up deactivating this stupid assistant like after ten minutes.

whenever a car approaches in front of me, the high beams never switch back to lows soon enough, and people flashes me all the time.

I am kind of disappointed. pretty useless.

I'm very happy with my car HBA. Although my car has A5 camera for assistant, which by many feedbacks works better than mirror mounted one. It has drawback like pedestrian road light intervenes, but You have to be aware of these "features" and it will work fantastically. I also have SEAT LED lights and no car has ever flashed me during using this feature. And during dark time(Autumn, Winter and Spring), like now, I drive a lot in the dark.

I was considering the retrofit for the A5 camera, but I would need to replace the windscreen. not gonna happen.

I have the "lowline" 20 camera and I find the HBA works really well, never been flashed by oncoming drivers and switches back to main beam as soon as they have passed.

Only change I have done is to lower the speed threshold as 40mph (58kph) was too fast for HBA to work on the narrow single track lanes where I live.

My earlier "lowline" also works pretty well on a PQ35 Octavia. Very occasionally it's slow to react but it's typically tail lights rather than headlights it struggles with.

I'd check the coding to see if there is anything obvious, ideally checking against another MK7 golf.

Maybe Italian drivers are just more eager to flash their headlights!

well, we do have a thing for being impatient and just pissed while driving. also, most of the times the code is just a suggestion...

there must be something not properly configured. I tried again and the function is barely usable.

the HBA never switches off high beams soon enough when a car approaches in the opposite direction. also, it somehow seems to be much more sensitive to street illumination than to car approaching from the front.

unfortunately there are not a lot of reference scans for taking inspiration.

guess it will stay off for now :banghead:

I have permanently disabled the feature, because it just does not kill high beams soon enough when a car approaches me.

I am considering going back to the non-HBA mirror.

HBA does seem to work well for some people (including me) but others (like you) find it very slow to return to dipped beam.

It doesn't seem to have any pattern whether it's good or bad

I would still bet my module 20 is not configured properly, but I don't have other examples to look at. when I reinstall ODIS I will check if it helps.

Don't know if it helps, but here is the adpmap for my 20 (including coding):

I fu**ed it up, merry christmas :banghead:

I connected ODIS (offline) and saw nothing helpful in the coding. So I tried "reset of all adaptations" and now the module says it is not parameterized.

this will need to be fixed by ODIS ONLINE, if it doesn't get mad because the module was not in my car from the factory.
