Passat B7 2011 reversing camera not working

Hi all,

Thanks for adding me.

I got the following full scan showing errors for reversing camera unit that is not working (also 19 CAN Gateway (J533) and 56: Radio (J0503)), all related to 6C: Back-up Cam.

Any idea where to start? Wrong codes, unit defective, fuse?

Hello,

Thanks for your question and posting the Auto-Scan. The Gateway installation list says it all, [6C-Back-up Cam. -- Status: Cannot be reached 1100].

Whenever you have a control module that is off line or can not be reached, you should check three things:
- Power(s) to the controller
- Ground connection(s) to the controller
- Communication wiring/connection(s) to the controller

Controllers need these three things at minimum to communicate with other controllers and VCDS.

As per the Official Factory Repair manuals with wiring diagrams and component locations the J772-Reversing Camera System Control Unit is located in the right luggage compartment.

Perhaps you should check for any water damage, corrosion, connector or wiring concerns, ground point (51) is also back there.

Fuse 'SC15' (10Amp) (left side dash fuse panel) powers the J772.

Does Your Rear Window washer work?
Passat B7 (365) are known for rear lid harness/tube failure. If You are already at this point, I fear You already may need swapping out the module and harness because of the damage fluid has made.

First off... thank you for posting a full Auto-Scan! :thumbs:

For any given control module to talk, the Holy Trinity must be in place:

J772 (right rear of vehicle):
T54b/42 is power from fuse SC15
T54b/44 is ground.
T54b/39 CAN low (data)
T54b/40 CAN high (data)

Are those electrical paths to factory design?

The interesting thing is that when I try to access the unit and it actually can be access through VCDS. I tested Function 8 (Measuring Blocks) and I could see everything there.

But today I will start from zero, checking step by step as you suggested, accessing physically the unit.

The only one I have checked is the fuse SC15 that is ok.

golfi_vend to be honest, not yet. I will have this checked today as well. Mine is a 3623H7 and reading the service invoices from the previous owner I found this:

"Check reverse camera cutting out intermittently. Tested reverse camera operation - confirmed screen blanking out intermittently when reverse engaged, due to internal electric fault in reverse camera assembly. Requires replacing to rectify".

I assume the job wasn't done as nothing was charged and the warranty was expired at that time.

So, to "fix" without charging the client, someone deactivated the camera on the radio menu as I could see yesterday. I ticked camera on the radio menu and now when reverse is engaged, a black screen appears on screen.

That's really crucial Jef! Thank you for the pin-outs, I will have this checked in a few hours.

I replaced the unit control 3AE907441 and now it's working.

I have the impression that in my previous Jetta MKVI the image had a superior quality (she was fitted with the OEM camera, without the control module). Maybe I'm wrong.

Usually this kind of water damage happens to B7 station wagons (365). Yours is a sedan (362), which has no rear window washer, so the damage came from somewhere else - most probably from the rear lid. I'd find out and remove the root cause because you may end up in the same situation again.

Yes, i noticed this later that it's sedan.
Sedans have issue with rear lid seal where the moving bar goes in and out.

Right on the top of where the module is fitted there is the tube that collects the water from the seal where the bars go in and out, the one on the right side may have overflowed and leaked water over the module.

But I am also considering the hypothesis that someone left the lid open for too long maybe doing some work on there... and it was left on whether.
