T5.1 Steering wheel retrofit airbag igniter fault

Hi All,

I recently retrofitted cruise control to a T5.1 along with a Mk6 Golf R sports steering wheel, brand new airbag and a Discover Media.
Tested everything was working and sent the owner on his way.
He had to drive for a few hours to go and pick some things up, then he said that he was doing a 3 point turn when he noticed the airbag warning light come on.
Checked the fault and we had a driver's airbag igniter short to ground fault (no other faults at that point.)
The next day the ESP fault light came on, which was due to steering angle sensor fault.

Seemed to me the most likely cause would be the slip ring (this was not replaced as part of the cruise retrofit, only the stalks).
So I got a replacement slip ring from a Polo wreck and swapped it over - same faults.
Put the original factory airbag back in and faults cleared.
Ok so problem is with the airbag or harness....

I took the working airbag and harness out of my B6 Passat (also a Mk6 R sports steering wheel, but with paddles) and put the suspect airbag into my car - works perfectly, no airbag igniter fault. Both airbags are newer single stage igniter type.

So now I'm a bit confused...my understanding is that this retrofit is compatible. I have added the required wiring for LIN and + from the steering wheel connector to the BCM in the Transporter and all functions on the multifunction steering wheel work including the horn.

Anyone had a similar issue or suggestion?

Can you please provide an autoscan 'as is', ie with faults.
Short to ground is normally the harness. Double check the pins are all touching cleanly with no breaks.

I don't have access to the vehicle at the moment unfortunately.

I couldn't see any evidence of it but perhaps the harness was crimped or trapped somehow when installed in the Transporter.
I'll test the airbag and harness for a few days in my car and make sure the faults don't recur, then put it back in the Transporter and see how it goes. Will post a scan with it faulted if it gets to that point.

Sorry I forgot to close this one out.
Issue turned out to be the clockspring (slipring).
After swapping the airbag and harness with a known working set, the fault went away. But eventually it started to log ESP faults due to steering angle sensor. This was intermittent, and then eventually the airpbag fault returned.
After replacing the clockspring (which has steering angle sensor integrated) all faults went away and haven't returned.
