Audi side assist canbus connection

I'm doing a retrofit of "Audi side Assist", otherwise known as blind spot warning, on my SQ5.
I've bought a loom and the necessary parts but have hit a snag.
The instructions say I should connect up the loom to a canbus gateway plug but the pin positions specified are already occupied by canbus wires, so I cant insert the supplied loom contacts.
Can I cut off the loom terminals and just splice into the existing canbus wires downstream of the connector so effectively connecting to the gateway?
Sorry if this is a daft question but I'm a bit out of my depth with canbus etc...

Yes, you can. However:

- Use a bare crimp contact to connect the wires. Soldering is a good alternative, but crimping is best. Do NOT use wire taps or any other ‘quick’ solutions, that will bite you later on.

- Isolate the points where you made modifications properly & reliably after you connect the wires.

- Make sure you are connecting to the correct can-bus network. There are multiple leaving the gateway (which is why you have a gateway).

SQ5 Side Assist coding help please

I've installed all the hardware for my side assist retrofit but am stuck on the coding needed.
The instructions I have state:
"Go to Address 19 - Can Gateway - add address 3C
In Address 3C execute the following coding - 010311"

I've found and checked "3C" in the Gateway installations list but I can't see how to get at 3C in order to code it.

Can someone point me in the right direction please.

HI,
I've done the scan as requested - not a pretty sight! I haven't replaced all the panels yet as I wanted to see if everything was working before re-assembling the car trim.
I found 3C in the "Comfort/Conv" section but it appears I can't communicate with it yet.
I'm a newbie at VCDS and my only experience is changing a few parameters and invoking ADS so please keep things simple!
All help gratefully received!

No pics but I bared a 10mm section of wire on leads going to pins 7 and 17 of the gateway.
I then stripped the canbus wires in my new loom, wrapped them around the appropriate bared section, soldered them together and added a piece of heat shrink.

I've spent the last two days checking and rechecking the loom connections. As you guys suggested, there were some errors so I've re-wired to match the diagrams in ESRA.
I'm pretty sure that its all correct now.
However, the 3C module still fails to respond to VCDS.
I'm coming round to the idea that one or both of the controllers are faulty. They were an eBay purchase and although the seller assured me that they worked fine I have my doubts...
Is there any way of testing these units, either on or off the car? I'd be happy to take them to a specialist if certain test rigs were required.

One other thing I've noticed is that the small indicator LED in the on/off switch does not come on when I press it. Not sure if that will only work once the modules are coded.

You can test the master module by wiring up power ground and can-high/low directly to the pins on the VCDS cable and on the module. You’ll need to provide an external 12v power source to it as well. Then you should be able to get a reading when manually selecting the module in the control unit screen. You do not get to try different pins on this, if you put 12V on the wrong ping or hook up a can wire to a pin with 12v on it, you can usually throw away the module, the VCDS interface or both. So if you really found more than one error in you wiring like you said I do not reccomend you doing this.

I've run a full scan and deleted DTCs but some of them were persistent.
I then re-ran a scan and this is shown below.
When I looked at the installation list on 19 and clicked on 3c, there was a message saying that the module was uninitiated and offering 3 options - use default code, use existing code and manually code.
I chose "default"

I spent yet another couple of days checking the wiring and re-trying VCDS but still no luck.
I had convinced myself that one or both of the modules were faulty and last night was scouring eBay for some replacements when I noticed that someone was advertising a unit describing it as a “master” when the part number corresponded to a ”slave” – or did it?
A search of online part catalogues revealed that it was indeed a master as advertised, which puzzled me, as on my car the same module was wired up as a slave.
Then I realised what had happened.
The position of the modules is fixed as they are “handed” and therefore can’t be attached to the bumper incorrectly
The written instructions I had showed the side assist bumper loom entering the car through a grommet on the drivers side, so I had followed that and fitted the loom to match, ie the connector with the short wires went to the drivers side and the extended wires ran across the bumper to connect up on the passengers side.
However, my Alibaba loom was wired the other way round, presumably LHD as opposed to RHD, and the short wires that should have connected to the master were actually connecting to the slave.
A quick swop of the modules proved I was right, VCDS connection was established and coding done.
This morning I reversed the bumper loom and brought it into the car via a grommet on the passengers side. Fortunately there was enough slack in the rest of the loom to avoid any need to extend it.
Irritatingly, after weeks of unbroken sunshine, its raining now so I can’t finish off the job!
So, many thanks to those who’ve tried to help and a slightly embarrassed apology for wasting your time.

Hi Russ

You need to be careful not to bring the loom through the side with the exhaust on. When I retrofitted side assist / blind spot assist on a Golf Mk7 I removed the fitted grommet (under the car) for the park pilot wires and used a wider grommet so as to follow a standard pathway.

I have an SQ5 so its got exhausts on both sides!
I was careful to zip-tie the loom so it couldn't touch anything hot.
I'm getting an error code on 3C which is telling me that both wing mirror side assist warning lights are either open circuit of shorted to positive.
I'm not sure what this means as according to ElsaWin, one side on the light is connected to a "30" source, which I assume means permanent 12v, and the other connects to the slave module.
When a vehicle is detected the slave drops the connection to earth which then flashes the warning light. I can do this manually by earthing the module wire.

When a vehicle is detected the slave drops the connection to earth which then flashes the warning light. I can do this manually by earthing the module wire.
Any idea what the problem is?

The problem sounds like the wires are plugged the wrong way around in the mirror. Turn them around and see if the error goes away.
